Russell Brand on Newsnight (01/10/10)

I thought he was great and clearly Paxman and Brand have a rapport.

Brand isn't everyone's cuppa, that's for sure, and as much as I dislike Ross, I just think the two of them got caught up in the stupidity of the moment with the Andrew Sachs thing.

I'm a fan, but it was uncomfortable listening.

I totally agree with one thing: It was the Daily Hate and their cult of haters who stirred the whole thing, not for possibly upsetting an elderly gent and his wife -- I'm confided that the granddaughter is more than capable of looking after herself -- it was a simply too good an opportunity to strike out at the BBC. When the BBC is no more, Murdoch's empire becomes more powerful. It's simple economics.

Yes, utterly bizarre, when he then attempts to deconstruct fame and celebrity as meaningless. Sigh...

On the note of Scandalous, to those talking about how Russell exposes idiots. Well, he has a point with some of it, but the whole show is less a comedy routine and more a ranting apologia for his actions, and an attempt at deconstructing the incident. Having laughed like a bucket thru his first two DVD's, I barely raised a smile during this one, as it was just ego being let loose and without his usual charm. I do genuinely think he is quite calculated in the way he has turned this round to look like the victim. Perhaps it's a defensive reaction, but he's old enough to take responsibility really. We all know the press are manipulative and construct 'narratives', but he really does seem to be failing to acknowledge any personal responsibility. He says sorry, but he very clearly isn't.

I want to hate Russell Brant, but there's something endearing about him. I think he is a very clever bloke, but it certainly didn't come across in that interview. I echo comments other posters said about Brand talking in rambling, incoherent sentences. It reminded me of the episode of 'FrienRAB' where Joey uses a thesaurus to make himself sound smarter when he writes a letter to the adoption agency. Needless to say it didn't work in 'FrienRAB' - and it didn't work for Brand.

If you think what was sent to Sachs voicemail contravenes that act you need to get out more.
Luckily the authorities live in the real world so didn't take any action.
I'm guessing the fact that the BBC broadcast it rather than editing it out as they could have done means they too were unaware of any wrongdoing other than some rude tomfoolery.

I've not quoted the rest of your post as it was drivel that only a Daily Mail reader could possibly take seriously

Wow we rerunning the bbc debacle again? I remember first hand, I listened to that podcast before any ruckus broke out. I didn't even have an inkling it would have blown up, it was that insignificant an incident. Which only tells me how ridiculous a reaction it was from both the complainers and the bbc. I literally didn't give it a second thought when i first listened to it, it was just another silly comedy, not offensive at all.

Only the ones who criticise him for stupid reasons.
It's fine to say you don't like him or he's not funny etc . He is a very acquired taste.

But the DM reader tag seems quite accurate for those who are still whinging on about the Sachs incident and using half assed reasons for their outrage

When did they take the piss out of an eighty-year-old?

I think I must've missed that bit. Closest they came was a cracking Dennis Norden interview, but that was fairly genial. Jokey, as you'd expect from a handful of comedians, but genial.

A devastatingly incisive observation that no-one, ever, anywhere has ever made a trillion times already.

Not as tiny as a mind shrunken to the size of a pea by gargantuan coke, heroin (and god knows what else) use.

Have to laugh at people attributing his mile a minute ramblings as evidence of higher intelligence as opposed to a lifetime of heavy drug use. I would imagine Brand and Johnny Vaughan could have a talking competition to see who can rabbit the most for the longest. Now what is it they have in common again......?

......

Some of you lot sound like cult members. Where

he couldnt really jusfity the andrew sachs thing by saying it was 'by accident.' at one point during the phone call to the answer machine he did have to make that concious decision to say what he said. unless he's suggesting he;s not in control of what he says or does?

just like the photographer took the decision to put the cam up katy perry's skirt. they're both the same act but he couldnt admit that. he's placing the blame away from himself

Believe me I sadly don't talk like that after a few beers on a Saturday night lol, I can barely string sentences together then, be good if beer did make you speak better though.

I think Brand will of won over some new fans with this interview, it does show another side to him and that he's not always being stupid and going on saying harry krishna all the time, talking in a dickenesqe manner and booky wooks, He can actual be serious, he'd be great to have in your school debating team, I think you would easily win.

About Katy Perry being fat, that is just ludicrous, she looked amazing in the photo, it must make overweight issues people feel so low with someone that shape being told she is too fat. Its wrong and they shouldn't be allowed to print such things, maybe if she has piled on the pounRAB but she clearly hasn't.
