Russell Brand on Newsnight (01/10/10)

Katy is very anti-drugs and I believe Russell is working a twelve step programme; the suggestion that he is on drugs is both ridiculous and offensive :(

Exactly! Paxman withered away in that interview, and it's strange seeing as he has been faced with far more intelligent people than Brand many times, and has never let it affect him.

They are both comedians, who use that talent to which you attribute to a lifetime of heavy drug use - ie: Their wit and articulation - professionally. I reckon that might be more of an explanation of their 'ramblings' than your theory. ;)

I don't honestly think he has, I think he was in shock and speechless at just how intelligent Russell was during the interview, the guy sounded like he was a complete genius, poor Jeremy was in shock I think that Russell knew all these long worRAB. Never judge a booky wook by it's cover

Don't forget though- it's not *his* fault he rang up Andrew Sachs and said bad things, it's the fame that did it! Fame made poor innocent Russell believe that Andrew Sachs was actually Manuel! It's all the fault of evil old fame.

Although when someone complains to the BBC that Russell Brand obviously dislikes Andrew Sachs 'because he is Spanish' (according to RB, in his Scandalous show), it's their personal stupidity wot dunnit.

whats this points scoring thing you're talking about? and who am i trying to score against?

i know perfectly well why he called andrew sachs but look again what i said, at one point during the call he made a concious decision to say what he said about his granddaugther. to suggest otherwise that he;s not in control of his own actions means what exactly? that he cant think for himself or isnt in control of himself?

he tried to justify the whole thing by saying because it wasnt planned out then it was 'alright.' at one point during the call it did become planned out because he decided to do it and acted on it. just as the photographer when he decided to get that special shot.

I don't know that he is, and of course he might not be, but in that interview he seems wired, so it's going to cross some people's minRAB. It's not ridiculous OR offensive. Why would you get offended on someone elses behalf?

i thought it was a good interview.....his last line was i want to make people laugh, can't beat that
he seemed wired because he is, he is just putting it all out there

A lot of the hostile comments here are from people who had already made up their minRAB about RB and won't accept the possibility that he might have a point.
I've always thought of him as a rather shallow publicity seeker (he might still be that), but having seen the interview, and understood it, it is apparent that he has in fact thought a lot about his situation and has some very valid points. Of course, sounding like Frank Spencer does nothing to help him make his points, but putting that aside if that interview had been conducted with (say) a world leader, speaking half as fast, a lot more people would be willing to pay attention to what he said.

Although some of it could well have been him playing the role of "himself", he still had a depth of background to mine - such as the passing reference to Kerouac. That spontaneity and erudition couldn't have been scripted.

I know, that was a good one. Or when he said "I take no responsiblity for craving fame, it was society". What ever happened to personal responsibility, eh?

I found it greatly amusing that the Brandwagon assumed that Jeremy Paxman was 'lost for worRAB', as if Brand was somehow bamboozling a man who writes books about the English language himself and grills some of the better minRAB roughly 3-4 days a week on Newsnight.
No-one really wants to hate Brand, he comes across as kind of Robin Williams character, as he was in the 70s/80s, babbling at speed, sometimes sparkling, but never stopping because he's afraid of the silence.
