Russell Brand on Newsnight (01/10/10)

It's not often Paxman is dominated like that in an interview. I think he was struggling to keep up!

I think Russell made some brilliant points. His comments about the media attacking the BBC made a great deal of sense and I hadn't thought about it like that before. And the example Paxman showed him of the forms they now have to fill in highlights the restraints on creativity at the BBC now.

Of course you could perhaps argue how much of that was the real Brand and how much of it was an act but his points did make sense. We know this because Paxman kept chipping in and adding to the conversation. He wouldn't have done that if Brand was talking complete twaddle.

Very interesting interview. Bit like when Piers Morgan interviewed Paris Hilton and she dropped the mask for a while.

Haha I thought nice joke there at the end then realised you were serious. Fair enough, spose on occassion he must ask a decent question not about money and at some point in her ilfe she must have said something vaguely interesting.

Agreed.
She obviously shared BranRAB surprise at the uproar and decided to take full advantage of it.

In his Scandalous show Brand does a great routine ridiculing the furore surrounding the incident and those who complained
The death threats he got had me rolling round the floor and gave a clear indication of the mentality of the pratts who complained.
One thought that Brand and Ross's phone message was malicious and down to their dislike of Sachs "because he is Spanish":)

On another forum far, far away, someone's just made a post with a link to this thread saying: 'Anyone seen this? Russell slates the Daily Mail on Newsnight, then the next day the Daliy Mail readers start calling him an incoherent, immoral junkie.'

In English, please?

The woman's behaviour is neither here nor there, a series of silly mobile phone messages culminating in a middle aged man shouting that one of the "talents" involved in the japery had, "Wucked your gwandawter" is. A lot of stupid masses think Brand/Wossy did nothing wrong. Stupid masses can have moronic ideas from multiple viewpoints.

Probably nothing, there are bandwagon jumpers in life, in the anti camps and the pro camps.

Your opinion of their motives is neither here nor there. The issue is that two people who were essentially public employees behaved in a way that was editorially unjustified to make same morons laugh.

Oh, so he's making hay out of it too, huh? Helped his rebel man image a lot. He does seem chastened by it tho but.

It wouldn't have happened years ago, that's the point.

Yes, he should have been sacked.

Yes, don't blame the millionaire talent, it's the BBC's fault

He should call the show "Straw man". Plenty of intelligent, articulate people thought the incident was a disgrace, but dissecting that on stage for his clever fans to feel superior about just wouldn't be comedy would it?

It was a good interview.

Warning, you may throw up due to Piers content.

You have to remember that it doesn't matter how many people complained either the day after or a month after, the issue is what they did in the employ of a public broadcaster and the fact that they and their supine editors thought it was OK.

Oh that smilie, the one people who think they're smart but are actually ignorant use. Well when you've done reading the Coles notes on Kerouac, you can check out s43 of the Telecommunications Act 1984 and Section 92 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994.

Plenty of morons came out to defend the pair of tits who did it too.

They presumably pay a licence fee, so are entitled to complain if they like. I'm sure of the 20,000 there were various camps; mischief-makers, people who hate the BBC, mental people...oh and maybe some who thought that the BBC funding two millionaires to take the piss out of an 80 year old for the delectation of "cool people who get it" wasn't quite what public service broadcasting should be.

And the fact that so many Russy and Wossy fans think what they did was OK demonstrates much more.

I worry more about the beatnik pseuRAB (like the Kerouac reference?) who think it's cool and dandy to reveal to an old man the sexual antics of his granddaughter on his mobile phone answering service. Cool man - that's entertainment.

His innocent act didn't wash with me. He has never apologised to the young woman whom he humiliated on the radio show but is horrified by the photographers' disrespect to his girlfriend.
Sorry, but he is in the same camp as them, he has made a living out of being disrespectful to women and it is no use coming over all innocent now and claiming he would never offend anyone.

Besides all that, I kept wondering what he was on.

Brand's schtick is what passes for wit and intellect to 14 year old girls and foppish teenage boys.

I wonder if he pays Johnny Depp royalties.

I thought he was very eloquent on the topic of celebrity but I was embarrassed for him when discussing religion :o

My Booky Wook was a very good read, also enjoyed his Scandalous tour :)

I have, yes.

I'm not denying his version of events. If you read what I wrote, I am questioning the very specific thing he said to Jeremy Paxman about how in his mind Andrew Sachs was Manuel, due to the fame of that character.

In his show Scandalous he berates a member of the public for complaining to the BBC under the impression Sachs is Spanish.

Arch hypocrisy. And not the only example in that interview, by any means.
