*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia N97

As far as price is concerned, we're also talking about a $650 OmniaHD available NOW versus a $700 N97 to be available in June. It may or may not happen, but that gives the OmniaHD a much better chance to be even lower than it is now by the time the N97 is launched and to consistently be lower than the N97 as the two phones age.

No, it's not fair to give credit to the N97 in that regard because it didn't bring those features to the table first. The OmniaHD is the first phone with an OLED screen that large, the first phone with HD recording, the first phone to use OMAP3430 (Palm Pre still isn't out yet), the first phone with wireless HD video out, and it's all in the same package. The HTC TouchHD had a 3.8" resitive touch screen (with a higher resolution than both the N97 and the OmniaHD) and 5mp camera over a year ago, as well as the 256mb of RAM and a faster processor. The only thing Nokia has done is taken that idea and added a physical keyboard (ala TyTN II, Touch Pro, Touch Pro2) and increased the storage space. The rest of the tech they're using is OLD.

Call me when you can pick up an E71 or N85 for that price, both are far better phones than the 5800 unless you're a huge media hound, and even the E90 has a bigger/better screen.

For those who have a 5800 and want to see what kinetic scrolling is like on the touchscreen, install the Gravity Twitter app. It does kinetic scrolling. So clearly this is already avaiable in the 5800 as well, it just needs to be tapped into somehow.

The competition might become fierce when Apple announces the new Iphone in June.....I'm hoping Nokia will wow us with this phone, but I do agree with sr1329 that it most likely will be a rehash of the 5800, which I thought was good, but not compared to the Iphone. Maybe the new Iphone will add a keyboard and removable battery :)

I do think they will be updated eventually. I just don't think that it will be by the time the phone is launched. I'm sure that they will be over time (just like v2 to v3). I just hate to spend top dollar to get a new phone that is not as capable as the one I have.

I DO HOPE that you're joking?! Besides high potential of being ripped off or the reseller just spending the $$ for their own Xmas shopping and cooking the books to say you didn't pre-order it. It would be smarter if you had the cash NOW to spend to invest it in some stock - even some with dividends and then in 6mths after the first ppl to get them shipped to purchase it and still have some dollars for a nice leather pouche/case, and insure it.

rogers has the best line up of smartphones in North America.
i dont know which line up u have been looking at. they dont hate nokia either. if anything their winMo devies are behind

@liknsmak

Thanks for pointing this out

"As for getting updates of new Symbian platform releases to your existing Nokia devices, unfortunately this will not work. Entire platforms cannot be downloaded on a device that has been built using a previous platform version."

It must come as quite a shock for those that insisted this was exactly what Nokia was going to do for the first time ever although many of us did explain why it wouldn't happen. I'd say users will be lucky to get anything more than fixes and tweaks at best in the lifetime of support for the N97, who knows maybe they will get an improved Web Browser at some point but i wouldn't bet on it as they would probably need to buy a new device to get that if it happens.
