*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia N97

I too noticed when he would try to hit a "button" that it would either not open, or the phone would think you wanted to change the wallpaper.

I sincerely hope some of this widget functionality trickles down to the 5800 (I seriously doubt it though)-

It's a win lose situation I guess. They had to get it out before all these new touchscreen devices stole away more customers so while they can reap more customers it's going to alienate some too because of how poor the touch experience is.

For a first device I didn't mind that the 5800 was rushed. This is their flagship that they've had time to fix and it has the same things I dislike in the OS.

okay...
can the n97 do:
divx(out of the box)
play hd video's
out put to dlna boxes
upload pictures to facebook(w/out any extra services)
upload videos to youtube(w/out any extra services)
lets u customize 3 diffrent home screens to switch when appropriate with widgets
have more camera options
there are more but too lazy to write

******* the i8910 can do all that and more!

can the i8910 do:
24 more gb
qwerty
850
laptop form factor
n series build (iam joking bout this one!)
******the n97 can do these but the i8910 cant.

why didnt nokia add better hw into the n97? so users can buy the n97-2,3, and 4!

as for the blaxx it might be your opinion that samsung build quality sucks, (i read ur documentary) but my bro inlaw only uses samsungs! i find his free samsungs and they feel more solid compaired to my 5800. the flips and his samy sliders feel more solid then my candybar 5800! i see my 14 month old niece throw them around and they all still work!

see theres one person "defending" the i8910 while there like 10 people saying he is wrong. at the end of the day the i8910 is like a 5800 on steroids with samsung dna and the n97 is an upgraded 5800 w/ qwerty and a new home screen.

i guess you get power vs os optimization. like Tim Taylor would say "MORE POWER, ar ar ar"

UXI why would you care for 850 if your on tmobile? you cant even use 1900!

BSD is only 1 part of 3 parts of OS X silly.
BSD is a part of Darwin, Darwin is OS X. ;)

But I'll agree that OS X's beginnings where from 1997 when NeXT Co. began with Steve Jobs.

Back on Topic ... This N97 is the shizznit. It needs to come out MUCH sooner.

Obvious Reasons for the long ship date:
* Economy affecting potential purchases - this device is very pricey in these times currently on NON-contract. iPhone, Storm, etc will make a killing with contracts in the North/South American markets and in Africa as well for the Bold/Storm.

* Hopefully decision on cpu has not been finalized - Nokia should consider utilizing that Marvell cpu that is used in the Bold/iPhone unless its only an ARM9 chip.

Yeah, I know. This is exactly what caused the hinge on the TyTN II to break so easily (eventually, it would stop being able to support the weight of the screen when you tilt it up)

i wouldnt call the n97 keys small thats for sure. have you ever seen other phones? e71, BB curve, blackjack, etc. THOSE are friggin small keys. n97 seems too large.

im with you on that, might wait a month or 2, which i usually do, just to let some user reviews accumulate and help me with my final decision (although this one is a no-brainer)

i would still be interested to see how the samsung omniahd or whatveer its called now holds its own via reviews

I just saw a video and realized that the music player is its own widget. So guess what I basically get more information from Active Standby as it current is on a 2.4" screen.

With Active Standby I can see:

1. Shortcuts
2. E-mails
3. Appointments
4. In device search
5. Music Player
6. Wi-Fi scan
7. FM transmitter

So right there in a 2.4" screen I have access to more data than this new Widgets platform can give me on a 3.5" screen.

Sure certain widgets will give me more control such as the music player would let me touch to pause or change the song.

But really a simple solution I suppose a monkey could come up is perhaps a single "active standby" widget that incorporates all that the old active standby had in a single double sized widget. That way we then have room for TWO widgets of our choosing (since shortcuts would still have to be its own).

I guess 3rd parties might have the ability to fix the problem Nokia left us with.

heh, finally I hear about an experience close to mine, lol. The N97, believe it or not, will be my very first Nokia and my very first smartphone. That's why to me, even if it sucks, or lags, it's already greater than everything I've ever had, lol. But still, you have to admit the K850 flashlight was one, if not the most, powerful flashlights on any cellphone. It was actually very useful in dark situations and you need a lamp/torch or something.

I'm sure SE, Samsung, HTC and the failing Motorola have something up in their sleeve but for now Nokia made the first move and raised the bar a little bit.
