*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia N86 8MP

The reason The Guru and others are choosing the N97 is because is hard to go back to a small QVGA screen after using a bigger high res one, IMO
I'm not even sure I will be able handle it.

Nokia is taking it's sweet time releasing this phone and with so many hot phones out now and coming down the pipe, very few people will care when they do.

They are indeed touch sensitive, but from the prototype I saw, the reviewer was stating that the touch keys were very unresponsive.

I am not worried though, as the handset that was being reviews was a very early prototype, & I am confident that the bugs will get ironed out on production models.

It doesn't make much sense to me to criticize an LED flash for washing out a picture and hold up the Xenon flash as better. My point was that flashes in general, regardless of what kind they are, wash out pictures and make them look horrible. So I really don't care if it's LED or Xenon. Flashes make for bad pictures. It's silly that people make such a big deal out of this.

So again, I think that people who are knowledgable about real cameras know that megapixels and flashes are not the things that make for good quality images (and Rafe says as much in his video interview on All About Symbian). What matters are things like the lens, the actual physical size of the sensor, low light sensitivity of the sensor (which in many cameras obviates the need for a flash), focal length, the range of aperture settings, having a real shutter. So, again, the fact that the N86 has multiple aperture settings and a real mechanical shutter, makes it much more like a real camera, than having a Xenon flash.

It will be interesting to see how the N82 sizes up, when the two get compared side by side. I think the N86 has the potential to be a genuine step forward in phone-camera technology. Even if the N86 doesn't turn out that good, Nokia is taking a step in the right direction, by stopping focusing so much on the things like flashes and megapixels, that aren't so important.

i went from the n82 to n85 bavck to n82 and finally to n86 and im loving every minute of it, except i upgraded to v20 before hacking it so now i have to wait for a hack to come out for it

Wow, those pictures look terrible for an 8mp camera phone! The N95 takes better pictures than that. I don't know what Nokia is doing. But they're pushing me towards the Sony Ericsson W995a.

If that happens and you don't need 3G, then it's smart move. I need 3G, so I'll get the Indigo Black. But I have to admit, the white one does look nice.

Not to sidetrack the thread any further from the N86 discussion, but I just loaded NIR on my N82 and it seems to be working fine - able to find and select stations without any hangups. This is version 1.16(0), and I was accessing the internet via wifi.

I agree that the N900 looks very promising, but at least for the moment the N86 still has the "ultimate featurephone" crown.

This is partly because it's a bit smaller and more "camera-shaped" than the tablet-style N900, but particularly because it has those lovely little slide-out media keys.

If my phone is going to double as a media player (and I want it to!) I need to be able to pause/play/change tracks without taking it out of my pocket. I can't really see doing that with something like the N900...or even an iPhone.

Having those extra dedicated buttons just makes it seem more like a "gadget", and I am a sucker for that sort of thing :P

Thanks for the suggestion, but it's definitely a bug. I have exactly the same problem on mine. Usually the sensor works perfectly, but occasionally the keypad lights just stay off.

Used to happen on my N85 as well and flicking the lock switch would bring the lights back into action, but that doesn't work on the N86. it eventually got fixed with a firmware update on the N85 so I hope they'll do the same for the N86.

At the risk of making myself a pariah, I'm interested in this phone although there are a couple of gripes I have about it...

-A 2.6" screen? Disappointing.

Well, I guess that's the only gripe LOL. The N86 isn't perfect but I think it shows that Nokia is now focusing on mastering some of the features on their phones. I hope this doesn't turn out to be the price Nokia charges for it once it's released because I'm looking at the N86 to replace my N95-3.

Exactly. Even though its not quite as good as xenon. The fact that its close to "good enough" but you also get to record video in the dark really makes it a good contender. It might be good enough for 97% of the time with that other 3% xenon wins. Not too shabby huh?
