*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia N86 8MP

Hey Niz,
To get the time to always display go to settings, general, personalisation, themes, power saver and select date. I'm not sure if there's a shortcut but that's where I went to change mine. As for the messaging client I agree with you there, it's really annoying to know that it's on a trial basis and it didn't even let me know how long it's on trial for.

from what you have said, (im not going to justify it like most fanboys)

Screen smaller - Its bigger for me but dont really notice unless I switch backfact)
Navigation Buttons - This I have not had a problem with

Speakers are TOTALLY HORRIBLE - I wouldn't go that far but agreed they are nowhere as near as good as the N82
NO pencil button for Copy/Paste. - Never had it before, Im used to the #
Power button much too small - agreed, sometimes I even end up sliding the media keys
And what a handy place to put the charging plug - They should just keep things at the bottom like the old days, better than the side though.

Overall after having used the phone for 2 months, I am not that amused, I mean does anyone really feel like the 8MP is making much photo quality difference for 5MP? I sure dont feel it.

The only thing thats making me keep it is the size, look and formfactor.

How would you guys feel if they just software updates the Nokia N82 to exactly what the N86 8MP is and even just give it that chrome finish look, that seems a dream to me.

So you have hard reset, and formatted the mass memory? I would do each a few times just to make sure nothing is still on there from before.

Without cell data, the gps can take some time to connect. A good 3 to 5 minutes at best if you haven't locked in a while.

If you can't lock at all, maybe your gps died. I'm on v20 and use the gps on a daily basis. So nothing in v20 that would break gps. I would send it in to nokia at that point.

My 1st impression on these 2 images was..

Whoa.. The N82 takes damn good pictures than the N86..

Then I realized the images were taken in complete darkness.. Nokia's dual led flash has improved throughout the years..

It might not beat the N82's Xenon Flash, but it didn't die fighting..

Anyone have problem with the volume up key / rocker key not working well?? Mine is requiring to push real hard to make the volume to go up.. Saw another on ebay with the same problem.... Anyone else have this and how did they fix it?

First I was disappointed from press pics, then I saw live pics....then I saw more live pics...then I started kind of liking it...then I started liking it even more....then....

Inclined towards the white version. They made the surface scratch resistant, that's wonderful. It has to be better built than N85. My 5800 is on the way. First It thought of replacing my 5800 for N97 but now thinking about keeping the 5800 and getting the N86.

just got it few hours ago.
imo, the slider is better than n85
nice screensaver. feels heavy(previously using e71)
phone shutdown once when i slide both the number pad and the camera shutter
miss the status notification light. the one on n86 kinda dim
weak vibrator
sorry i'm not a good reviewer.

Nikki, I'm not sure if it is the xenon flash, or your hand shaking a little. But the last two pictures taken with the n86 have a lot of blur. Are you finding that a lot of the pictures taken with the n86 are causing more blur?

Well, I've received my N86 NAM (pre-order from Amazon) several hours ago and I have been comparing it to my N85 NAM. So far, I am not very impressed.

IMO the N85 is a much better looking phone. I have the copper version and always thought it looked pretty good. The Indigo N86 battery cover has a very dingy looking matt finish, as does the keypad surround, not very attractive. The black chrome surround of the top surface is a fingerprint magnet and, also IMO, not very attractive. The selection keys are thin slivers (reminiscent of the miserable keypad on the N82) and are hard to operate with the flat of your finger. The dpad also does not work nearly as well as the one on the N85 and I am finding it very easy to activate the select when trying to only navigate. It also does not have a well defined inner edge which is very useful when trying to use the dpad with you finger nails.

Build quality seems very good.

Many changes to the menuing structure from the N85, which was a surprise. No WLAN scanning on the home screen, which I use extensively. The compass in maps works well and is a nice feature.

I have always had bluetooth problems with the N85 and certain headphones that I have never had with my N73 or N82. The N86 so far is showing the same bluetooth issues as the N85. This is one area where I was definitely hoping the N86 was going to be better.

I have had three N85's (replaced twice by Nokia for various hardware problems. The one I have now still has some minor hardware annoyances, not worth sending back to Nokia at this time thought. Through three software upgrades (currently 30.019) the N85 NAM is still the buggiest N series phone that I have ever had. Using it has often been an excersize in frustration. I was hoping to really like the N86 and replace the N85 with it but, so far, the jury is out. I will definitely spend some time with it but my initial impression is that I will stay with the N85 and look for something else coming out from Nokia.

Not for sale, but for play:

THE N86 IS A PROTO AND TO ME IT SEEMS THAT IT WAS TAKEN A LITTLE FURTHER BACK THEN THE N82, STILL THE N82 IS THE CLEAR WINNER HERE.

Well they kind of have to be critical now to maintain whatever little shred of credibility they have. I'm sure they sat down at a meeting with Nokia and discussed exactly in what ways they were allowed to be critical and how far they could go.

I bet also that they will be most vocally critical about issues that Nokia is scrambling to deliver a fix for sometime this century. After all, you can't piss off the guy you signs your checks.

I'll take Mobile Review. People with some experience outside the narrow walls of one OS.
