*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia N86 8MP

One problem for many of us is the lack of v21 firmware for product code 0590552 NAM RM485 phones. This is not available via navifirm, so we cannot hack to v21 only to v20. I have read enough about the n86v20 firmware to know I'm not going there.
There is always someone who will change the product code to upgrade, but I don't want to go there either.
So, as usual, I wait impatiently for Nokia to release firmware.

Reception is flawless, but my callers say it sounds like I'm talking in a room with no carpet on the floors (???). No one reported to me that it sounded bad, just different than my previous phone.

The quality over the earpiece is definitely worse than my N95, as it is sometimes hard to make out what people are saying if they aren't talking directly into their phone; on my N95, you could tell that people weren't talking into their mic properly, but I could still make out everything they were saying. I find that I have to ask people to repeat stuff sometimes, where I wouldn't have had to before.

Speakerphone quality is definitely worse as well, both in volume (slightly) and quality. Things don't sound nearly as crisp on my end, but all of my callers couldn't even tell that I had them on speakerphone when I was talking to them. This is a plus for the N86 in this regard.

In terms of background noise, I find no difference when compared to my N95 or N80 (two of the BEST sounding phones, IMHO). I can hear everyone perfectly with while driving with my window down and my stereo on, but as I mentioned above, just not quite as clear - - sometimes muffled.

I haven't owned the E71 for more than a few days to make an honest comparison. I have owned the E75, and it is louder and has better quality than this. Reception on the N86 also blows the E75 out of the water.

I'm coming from an N95 and an N80, and while the voice quality isn't as good on my end, it is by no means poor. I'm pleased with the N86 so far, and I think it may have a permanent place in my drawer like my N80 and N95.

It is, but I just don't feel like messing with the whole thing this weekend. I'm enjoy my N86, and I paid as much for it as I did for my N80 years ago. Further, it's definitely worth $500 to me, but I'm happy for everyone who found it cheaper. If I was an N97 owner early owner, I would probably feel a little burned considering the phone has dropped in price by literally $170 in about 2 months.

I think a Nokia service centre is your next hope :/ ive looked up on google and there does not seem to be a way to rollback firmware either.

Wow is the N97 starting to lose it luster for you guys???? Yeah, the new touch pro 2 looks interesting, but I'm also waiting for the Pre and New Iphone to see which touch screen phone will be my next little number.

I was so excited about the N97 until recently.

if you are outside and using the assisted gps feature it should not take you that long at all to get a lock, unless you dont have a data plan. i have a data plan and let the agps do it thing and i was getting locks in seconds, not minutes. try using google maps, it should get a lock the quickest and it will show you how many satilites it sees. when using ovi maps, if it doesnt get a lock in 20-30 secs, close the app completely, then re-open it and it should lock fairly quick.

i used ovi maps and garmin xt in toronto and arizona on a recent trip and they worked great for me. the only time i have ever had difficulty getting a lock is when i am inside a building. i can get a lock from inside my house, though.

I might pick up the N86 for the right price. If the build quality is good with no wobbles like the E65 then i'll get one for the gf.

Tho many people might think i'm crazy, i'd only pay $300 for this phone.

My pre-order still shows "processing" - I am in NY today and went over to the NY store to see if they would match the 10% off I got on my pre-order with the "nokiatheatre" code. Tried everything, but no dice.

I was not particularly excited by the N86 after playing with it in the store a bit. I guess it is exactly what everyone has said - an older generation phone, with an upgraded camera. I THINK that is what I want though...I really want a standard telephone keypad.

They also had the little product brochure for the N86. Interestingly now that I see the dimensions in metric (for some reason the website posts the N86 in inches?) I can see it is a bit larger than the N85. N85 = 103mm x 50mm x 16mm while the N86 is slightly longer - 103.4mm, much wider - 51.4mm and slightly thicker - 16.5mm.

The N85 came with 3 months of voice guided NAV - the N86 has a "trial license". Not sure what that means. N86 comes with one free full N-Gage game.

I find it fascinating that Nokia must be spending a fortune for the NY store, has it staffed with tons of help, and these guys are pretty much clueless about the product. They could not answer any real substantive questions.

Had my daily "chat" with Chris at nokiausa.com - he says they received a bunch more N86's today and I should be receiving mine in a day or two. Yeah right....

Yes, I had the N82 and the Xenon Flash is a battery serial killer.

I'm also digging the white version. I am seriously looking at this phone to finally replace my N95-3.

hi,

I just got my n86 yesterday and i would like to upgrade to the new v21. I am still new to this phone. What is the correct way to update the firmware? Is it update then do a hard reset? Is a hard reset required really?

also, how do i save my contacts, calenders , program, games as backup as i am afraid that something will go wrong with the update and lose everything? Also, what will hte hard reset delete? will it delete all the pre-installed stuff?

Thanks

Nope, as I believe this has been taken out on all FP2 devices.

It still will not work for me. I literally can't even get as far to start a station before the app just closes. I'm totally down about this as I used this application daily-

here is a tip for everyone using the n86......if you do a backup using pcsuite make sure you dont include the E drive if you have a bunch of stuff on it. i did a full backup today because i wanted to format the e drive to see if it makes the device any faster and it was a nightmare restoring all of my info. the restore process would get stuck at 8% and stay there for 20 min without any change. i ended up starting over from scratch as my settings would not totally restore because some info must be stored in the E drive for mailforexchange. i could not set up my exchange account until i hard reset the device, after an hour of trying not to. what a waste of time.

the only good thing is that the restore process was very quick when i tried to restore everything except the e drive, so next time i will just drag and drop files to my desktop, then drag them back after.

lol I dunno after the first few months I become careless and this last month ive dropped it who knows how many times.

Yeh I heard this but im thinking what if the phone messes up, although through the entirety of my N82s life I have never factory reset the phone but well that is a different phone.

Also I think I have found a major gripe with Nokia which I will live with for this phone (I have no choice) but will push me away from future Nokia phones. It seems that the default messaging client is in trial period? I have gmail and mail for exchange pushed to my phone. This was completely and still is free on my N82. It is the new Nokia messaging client to the old one but how can this be? I have paid for the email client no? Why should Nokia get any subscription based money its the mail for exchange server and gmail doing all the work right?

oh and one more thing how can i get the time to always display, and along with the date if possible as it did with the N82 when on standby.
