*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia N86 8MP

I agree. I went to a bar a couple of weeks ago before I got my N86 and I used a SE 760i and my manager got a bit drunk and did a horrible Karaoke so I shot a video and while I got the horrible sound of his singing it was impossible to see him at all.

I don't really think those are the "facts." The N82 may be the best camera phone in low light conditions, if you like photos taken with a flash and don't think they're ugly. Otherwise, in all other lighting conditions (which is most of the time for most people) Nokia has produced many N series phones that are comparable to the N82. So once again, the Xenon isn't everything and it doesn't make the N82 the "best" in any objective or generalizable sense. It's particularly good in one very specific situation, when using a flash, and that is only "better" than other camera phones if that reflects a certain set of personal (subjective) choices about what makes for a good photo.

I'm happy with camera phones in much the same way you are. So you're just making a straw man argument to dismiss our points. I just don't like flash, I don't care about flash (as well as ever more megapixels), and I would like to see cell phone manufacturers focus on other more important improvements (lenses, sensors--for the umpteenth time), which are perfectly realistic expectations from a cell phone. It will never be like a D60, or D3, or Mark III, but it can be a whole lot better than it is. But the manufacturers will never do this as long as they can get away with more irrelevant solutions (flashes, megapixels) that are cheaper and easier to do, since consumers don't know any better.

Same here....Internet Radio crashes when I search and add stations. Funny never had a problem before on my old Nokia's...I'm hoping they update firmware fast to fix this problem.

Yeah, I think when I first updated to v20 OTA the results were the same as doing in from my computer. So I don't think there's anything wrong with the OTA upgrade to v20 per se. It just seems that v20 breaks GPS. And in fact it was only the reinstallation of v20 from my computer that broke the keypad tones, not the original OTA update. So OTA may actually be better (but now that I've got v20 on the phone, it won't let me reinstall firmware OTA). In any case, as I said, I've already reinstalled the firmware several times, from my computer, and then done a hard reset and it did not help to fix the GPS or keypad tone problems. Any other ideas? Thanks.

i send files back and forth with the n86 on my mac always with no issue, i dont even have to pair the device, just send it finds my mac and thats it, i just accept file on my mac screen and im good to go. :buddies:

I dont get the point of the comparison pictures. What shows up on the screen may not be what ends up as the final picture.

By the way, whatever camera they used to take the picture sucks.

I still have this problem and I wonder if anyone else does too. When I am on a call and nokia messaging trys to connect to 3G data, the call drops. Does anyone else have this problem? As I have messaging set to connect to every five minutes, this happens way to often.

Could you give some specifics? What does the N86 specifically do better in your opinion? I'm genuinely interested. But just saying it's better doesn't mean much to me.

That said, whether or not specific applications on the iPhone and Pre are better than those on the N86, it seems obvious to me that their operating systems represent a sea change in what's possible on a cell phone, as well as what's possible with touch screens. They function more like computers and less like phones with a bunch of applications crammed in. And sure the iPhone wasn't the first touch screen, but it took the possibilities of interaction to an entirely different level that obviously everyone is trying to copy now.

Anyway, again, I'm not an iPhone or Pre fan. I'm just curious what it is specifically (other than the camera) that people like better about the N86.

BTW - I find all the comments about difficulty cancelling pre-orders to be interesting. In my view Nokia is not at all complying with the FTC's mail order rule (which also applies to online and telephone orders). If they do not ship within 30 days of your order (or in some cases 50 days) they have to give you the option to cancel. This is a pretty good "plain English" discussion of the rule: http://community2.business.gov/t5/B...or-Telephone-Order-Merchandise-Rule/ba-p/5167

IMHO, the N86 is getting all of this attention based on the fact that it is a *refined N96/N85/N95:

-Superb build quality with a scratch resistant, glass screen
-FM Transmitter
-8MP camera with a wide angle lens and variable aperture
-Active slide-out stand
-8GB internal memory with external microSD
-OLED screen
-Excellent audio quality
-3rd generation LED flash
-Improved browser

I personally think this is something to be excited about, as there is NOT one Nokia device on the market that has EVERYTHING that this phone has. Further, for those of us that do not want to use a touch screen, S60 device, I personally don't see a better option available.

Thanks for the post Rafe and for the request for suggestions.

Obviously there is a lot of interest in the low light performance of the N86. I would like to see comparisons to the N82 and other high end camera phones that look at low light performance without any flash (say in low light, but not completely dark conditions). I would hate to see the comparison come down to Xenon vs. LED, since there are a lot of low light (though not dark) conditions that could benefit from obviating the need for a flash.

For example, indoor daytime photography, that might not have enough light for most camera phones. Is the N86 good enough to produce decent indoor photography without a flash? What about indoor night time photography just with the ambient light from lamps, etc.? Or outdoor daytime photography in shadows, rather than direct sunlight? Or outdoor photography at dusk?

It seems like if the comparison comes down to just daytime direct sunlight photography and nightime photography with flash (where the Xenon is likely to prevail), a lot of the potential of the N86 might be missed.

Also, I would love to see a detailed review of the actual call quality of the phone, which is something reviews ignore so much. Particularly how well the microphone performs in noisy settings. Does it pick up and amplify background noise to the point of being really annoying for one's caller? I find most phones do this, but some are definitely much better than others. For example flip phones tend to be better, because they place the microphone closer to the mouth and don't have to turn up the gain as much to pick up one's voice. Also, what about volume level not just of the speaker phone function, but of the regular earpiece in noisy settings. The only reviewer I've ever seen really take the question of actual call quality seriously is Steve at Steve's Southern Ontario Cell Phone Page (http://www.arcx.com/sites/).

Thanks.

I got a good laugh out of that. I'm entertaining trade offers for my N95 on Craigslist now. Back to WinMo for me. Hell, I'd actually try UIQ if there was at least ONE decent phone with it that had 850 MHz compatibility and EDGE. What the hell was SE thinking by omitting EDGE?
