*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia N86 8MP

Got the same problemo...but, with me Ovi Maps crashed and the phone rebooted as well if I enable the Network Based Pos. :(

but, I don't get the problemo w/ it unchecked though...Ovi Maps (and Google Maps) are still pretty accurate for navigation.

We've reached a point where cell phones, like other technology items, are less about hardware and more about software. As long as it works and is unobtrusive, i don't think most people care about the form factor. There's tons of phones out there with buttons if people want them. Of course, none of them have interfaces as polished and usable as the iPhone which is really the device's key selling point.

i really don't see Apple releasing any other form factor of the iPhone any time soon. They believe in the quality and usability of their touchscreen, as they should. And Steve Jobs hates buttons. If anything, they'll do what they always do and divert interest away from a shortcoming of their hardware by playing up another feature which makes is meant to make up for it. In the case of the iPod Shuffle it was the text-to-speech feature which reads track titles. On the iPhone it's voice dialing.

And i strongly agree with wirelessgal. i get tired of countless uneven comparisons of the iPhone against whatever other mobile device. Honestly, i get tired of hearing about the iPhone, but that's another thread altogether.

If real player is set to use the connection you want it to use (in the actual real player options), and it isnt' working. Then your connection is probably being blocked or something.

I never had any issues with real player. Only once in a while I would be connected to gprs and try to play a online video and it wouldn't play. That was because real player was still set to use wifi. So that is why I mentioned that.

Um, I guess I'm comparing them because they are all phones that more or less do the same things that I might want to do with a phone. By your logic you may as well say, only compare phones with 3.1 inch screens to other phones with 3.1 inch screens. Only compare phones with 3.5 mm headphone jacks to other phones with 3.5 mm jacks. Only compare phones that have glossy black finishes to other phones that have glossy black finishes. The idea that any of these devices are "completely different" makes no sense to me. When you come down to it, they all are trying to offer ways to cover pretty much the same functionalities: calls, text messaging, email, web, music, video, camera, games, pim. Of course, they do these things more and less well and that's where comparisons become relevant.

Anyway, if you go back a couple pages and read my first post posing the question, I said that I like the N86 and want to get one, mostly because of the camera, but I couldn't shake the feeling that aside from the camera the N86 represents old technology and the iPhone, Pre, and Android phones represent pretty much what all phones are going to become, phones with much more sophisticated OSes and user interfaces, that are becoming more like computers, than traditional cell phones. So why spend a lot of money on the last of the old technology? And so, I asked people, what is it that they like about the N86 other than the camera? But instead of answering this question, everyone just wants to argue about the iPhone, while pretending that they don't want to argue about the iPhone and even though comparing the N86 to the iPhone isn't the point I was making.

So let me reframe my question, other than the camera, what features are people looking forward to using in the N86 and how do they imagine this experience differing from whatever phone they currently have?

From where do u get this info ? the ver 20 firmware is not even out yet? and its buggy ? Source pls .. ver11 is working very well for me .. very solid ..

@samsung.user if you were unaware Nokia now has a push messaging service called Nokia Messaging. See http://email.nokia.com for details. On older Nokia devices you downloaded a client to work with the push service but newer devices like the E75 and N86 have the client built in. It seems the N86 comes with a limited trial of the service. The email client still supports direct connect email via POP and IMAP as well as Mailfor Exchange and these will still work free of charge once the trial is over.

I think you just summed it up for me. Maybe we have been spoiled. Maybe Nokia gave us too much at one time.

Nokia is getting away with underproducing, and we as consumers are accepting it. (heck, we even stand in line and pay top dollar for it)

I don't understand why Nokia can't release the NAM&Int'l versions at the same time. It has been demonstrated that there is a sizeable market in here the US for high end, non-subsidized phones.

Here is the battery test you've been waiting for. The data shouldn't be taken as fact... each phone is different and I'm only an amateur N86 user and did this out of curiosity.

Settings on phone:
light sensor: 50%
light time-out: 15sec
power saver time out: 25sec
power saving mode: date
sensors: all on
homescreen theme: horizontal on Nokia N-series theme

From a clean bootup, I will be testing for 3 things:
a) when is running in fore-ground with backlight ON (from 1- 15 sec)
b) when is running with backlight OFF (from 15-25 sec)
c) when is running in background with backlight OFF and power saving ON (from 25 ? 60 sec)

***all numbers are averaged, also note that I?m an amateur and data may not be accurate*** :2thumbs:

No headphone test as I don?t have any?.sorry. someone else can do it

1. With only standby/home screen (63-64M ram free) (3.77Volts )
a) 0.250W
b) 0.041W
c) 0.027W

2. With Nokia Maps ? with GPS satellite ON (57M ram free) (3.77Volts )
a) 0.998W
b) 0.151W
c) 0.081W

3. With Garmin XT ? with GPS satellite ON (53M ram free) (3.77Volts )
a) 0.963W
b) 0.321W
c) 0.276W

4. With Garmin XT and Nokia Maps both ON (3.93V)
a)0.85W
b)0.38W
c) 0.30W
not sure why Power (W) is lower now, maybe because Voltage (V) is higher?

5. With phone call on silent mode with vibration on (3.77Volts )
i) 1.04W when the phone first vibrates
ii) 0.64W when talking on phone
iii) 0.54W when talking on phone via Speaker
iiii) 0.45W when talking on phone with screen off
***didn?t see any real difference with general mode on with vibration on

6. Doing messaging and web and looking at photos (3.77Volts )
i) 0.57W overall: but web browsing alone was 0.88W

7. Nokia Music with Speakers at 50% (3.77Volts )
a) 0.64W with music
b) 0.41W with music
c) 0.41W with music

8. LCG Music player with Speakers at 50% (3.77Volts )
a) 0.62W with music
b) 0.45W with music
c) 0.38W with music
***no real difference with nokia music***

9. With Camera ON (3.92Volts )
i) 1.11W
ii) 1.4W When taking pictures without flash(CPU process at 100%)
iii) 1.5W When taking pictures with flash (CPU process at 100%)

10. Comparing Camera Off methods (3.92Volts )
-after doing both the cover slide Off method AND the selecting the exit menu Off method, the power measured afterwards did not seem any different; this was surprising as many people on this forum have said that when you close the camera via sliding up the cover, the camera program will still drain battery. This is clearly not the case as seen by me. I may need to redo this test again in a later day. If someone can do this test on their phone to verify this specific situation that would be great.

11. With GPS Garmin and Nokia Maps on WITH Camera ON (3.77Volts )
i) 1.33W no flash
ii) 1.7W-1.8W during flash

I hope nokia fixes the battery indicator bar, as it is Horribly inaccurate.

PLEASE comment and make suggestions about the info I?ve provided. This took a good 2hrs to do, would be great if someone else can verify a few of these tests or do any other tests they may think of. The program used was ?Nokia Energy Profiler?

Hope it was helpful.

I'm in the same vote as you ... N85 now & of price -or- N86 in May/June. The N97 will be a splash, no doubt but I cannot justify spending $950CAN+ on a smartphone.

PS I'll be pissed if the N97 is just $250US more than the N86.

Yeah I had one freeze up and had to restart. Other than that it seems to work ok. I do have a lot of emails on my server. Odd how it shows the current email on my home screen dated 9/23 when I have more current.

Well i'm not gonna bash the lack of xenon just yet. They claimed its the next generation of LED. Also they added a fast mechanical shutter, and i think better sensor for lower light conditions. This could turn out to be a top performing camera.
