*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia N86 8MP

It provides the immeasurable comfort of holding on to the last vestiges of a dying technology. That's worth $500 at least.

For all we know, in 6 months they'll probably come out with a refresh with xenon and call it the N86 16GB or they could just call it N87. :p

Anyone else having problem with lanyard port ? The lanyard just comes off often and it never sets securely . This is by far my biggest complain about n88's hardware.

His whole point isn't that xenon sucks. It's that for camera quality, better sensors will do much more to make a picture better looking than a xenon flash.

If everyone keeps asking for xenon flashes but don't care about the same tiny sensors, we get a camera with xenon and a tiny sensor. In a way I agree.

As RogerPodacter noted though, xenon flash in a dark environment like a bar>any camera sensor that will come on a cellphone in the near future.

More than anything else, this phone confirms that S60 5.0 is just 3.2 with touch bolted on, not a bona fide revision of the OS. The question is whether Nokia plans to shift completely to touch-based phones moving forward or to continue to support both form factors. The problem is that the user interface for a proper touch-based app is completely different from the optimal interface for an app on a non-touch phone, so it would be difficult to do anything except switch entirely to one methodology or the other.

What account? What email?

This makes no sense at all. Mail for Exchange is free. And gmail is just basic Imap. How can nokia delete your work or gmail account? The fact you are even being emailed about this doesn't sound right.

Not to mention there would be more information about this on the internet. To have a "trial" you would have had to signed up for something. Or some service. My works exchange account and my personal gmail have nothing to do with nokia.

Unless you are talking about some other service?

You can pretty easily get the N85 new for close to $300 on ebay right now. The low price on the N86 is $529, but they're kind of all over the place, since the phone just came out. I would never buy a phone directly from Nokia, that just seems like a sure fire way to get ripped off.

Also, isn't the intro price on the N86 supposed to be lower than what the N85 first sold for? Which would suggest that the price on the N86 will come down to $300 more quickly. That's one of the things about technology, it tends to get better and cheaper at the same time, because of economies of scale, etc.

The problem for me is once the price comes down to a level I'm willing to pay, they next new thing is on the horizon and it's easy to just keep waiting. Of course, you can save a lot of money that way.

Have you ever had a Samsung Innov8? Can you compare it to that phone for me? For some reason I see getting an N86 as a downgrade from the Innov8, but I could be wrong.

I don't think anyone has claimed the N86 is better (or worse) than the N82. People have just claimed that the fact that it doesn't have Xenon doesn't mean it's automatically worse as a camera and should be dismissed out of hand, which some people seem to want to do. And people have claimed the fact that Nokia is focusing on the lens and sensor with the N86 is promising. Why is that such an objectionable thing to say? It seems like a pretty modest point to put forward.

Also, there is this link about new LED flash technologies, which I already posted, in which the authors of the study claim to have developed a system of high-power LED flash, which is better than Xenon. And it's a pretty in-depth scientific study, with camparison photos. So if anybody bothered to look at it, I don't think you can say that there is no proof that LED may have already surpassed Xenon as a flash technology. I'm not saying this in anyway decides the issue. But you said there's no proof about better LED flashes and this certainly is some sort of proof. I know you said with respect to camera phones that are out now. But I don't see why a study like this should be ignored. It's a technology that actually exists and has been tested, regardless of whether there's a phone with it yet. So it's perfectly relevant to the question.

Do you have a link? I can't find anything about this. I did see people talking about it being scratched, or talking about how it's different than n97. But nothing of a new design.

I finally did notice a scratch on mine also. But it's way over, in line with the most outer circle of the lens. Seems like a scuff from the yellow thing. It's raised over the lens so you would need a pretty big piece of dirt to get lodged. I think the scratches we are seeing is just from from that part touching the lens. My phone is still somewhat new also. I'm sure it will get worse.

But interested in this new design.

The n86 is capable of taking good low light photos but the slightest movement still causes blurry images. I found it to be almost impossible to keep it completely still when taking a shot as my finger would press down on both halves of the phone when trying to press the shutter button and since there is play between the two halves it would cause some movement just as the picture is being taken. I sent mine back and ordered another one and they both have the same issue, the top half of the phone shifts from left to right, so while the up down slider movement is good there is play from side to side. It ruins a very nice phone for me. I sent them both back for refunds
