Only one thing to add:
When I tell a program to write to a specific sector on a disk, I cannot know anymore that the disk will really write there.

I can only know that it will write the data somewhere.

We tried that in an informatics class: Write data to the outer rim and to the inner rim of the disk. The outer rim should have different access values than the inner rim, for physical reasons (the disk spins).

Our results didn't show that effect. Rather they showed us that modern hard disks optimize the data layout internally, so even when some tool completely erases any trace which could be found by software, you can't know if there aren't parts which remain in a sector the disk began to see as unfit.

Another example: If my disk gets a "dead bit", I won
t see anything of it, if I didn't have some data on it.
If it's empty, the disk will just silently remap the logic bit to some otehr hardware bit, and no software tool will be able to access it.

Long story short: Additionally to recovery programs, a physical check of your disk can uncover stuff which wasn't even reachable by software anymore.
 
I've faced this problem as well. I qued some videos the other night and later watched them to find that some were KP. I deleted them. Then I previewed some of those still in que and deleted some more that were iffy.

I thought I was good, then I realized about a week later that I forgot to delete the file fragments or whatever. However, I don't even share my files, nor do I share file fragments, so do I have anything to worry about?

I also didn't know that a regular delete wasn't secure. So I guess my HD still has fragments on it. This sucks. I think I'm fixing to uninstall limewire. Too much trouble.
 
I like your thinking mate! I try to download a movie (not porn) and it opens a CP pic, SICK! Worst thing was , my 2 and a half year old son was sitting beside me at the time, i got the IP's and sent them off to the ASACP.

The more of these disgusting sons of bitches the Feds know about the better. :mad:
 
so being i dont have a floppy, nor a burner, havng defragged the computer ten times and deleted the unwanted files not much else i can do but get a cleaner program i guess and look (read what im downloading) before i leap (download many files hitting shiftkey). i remember back in the old days kazaa didnt have all this crap online
 
window washer does a nice job of overwriting data...Norton's system works also has a sub routine that overwrites also...

you might try googling data erasing or somesuch to see if there is a free program available....

When I said "the really bad stuff", I meant that these wern't just images of naked kids....get my drift?

I understand it's easy to fall on this stuff every once in a while using gnutella, but to have so many images of a particular kind of stuff, tells me that person was looking for it. These images being S&M is most deffinently why he got that kind of a jail sentence.

I think you're right when you said that they need enough evidence to possibly win over a jury. Which is why I'm almost certain that they go after people that are sharing these files. One, because they have to be sharing these files in order for the police to download it off of them, and two they want them to still be sharing these files when they go after them so that they know they are going to be in possession of these files when they get there.

Personally, I'm not sure how much longer they're going to really focus on gnutella to catch these people. I guarantee you the real predators are long gone from this network. There's too much press in relation to all the "tracking software" and what not that is being used to hunt these people down. The only people they are going to catch now are a few idiots, and kids. Which, if you notice some of the arrests lately, are exactly just that.
 
I think most of us find it sick. But doesn't "limewire" start with you and me? The problem is too big to put on LW, just us little folks can make a big difference in this sick sh*t if we junk it, and in the least NOT d/ling the barbaric filth-

You were possibly sharing it, so they have evidence against you. Be careful in what you do, and get someone skilled in law _now_, so you know how to respeond if someone should suddenly come in.

In germany downloading is illegal and will get you into trouble.

The law was changed a few years ago, so yout info might just be outdated.

They can't catch you if you don't share

And they can just join the download mesh of your file, so they don't even need to share it. Your client tells them "I have parts a...z of the file". Same is true for BitTorrent and edonkey.

Please research the inner workings of Gnutella before giving this wrong advice again.

The police acts only on solid evidence

Again german law (that's what I know best): If they need to secure evidence, they will get a warrant from a judge. Yes, it will take some time, but a few weeks definitely suffice - and some judges are faster in that than others.

Tell a judge "we have information, that this person shares files illegally, but we need to get his computer to secure hard evidence" and the judge will give you a warrant (more exactly: He'll give the warrant to the police - there goes your computer).

And that search is then authorized by a judge and all "secured" evidence can be used against you in court.

How else should anonymous tips ever be efficient?


Please be more careful what you tell unsuspecting users, especially since you won't be the one running into problems from your info, but others might pay for your carelessness.
 
Yeah.....true. I would suggest not even downloading porn on Limewire or any video that seems to be fishy. It is different if you download something that is labeled child porn and you INTEND on viewing it, and clicking on something completely different and then viewing it and finding it to be child pornography....especially if you are sitting there downloading a cartoon or something for your 8 year old child and then it pops up as the sickest stuff that parents would never want their kids seeing their entire life.....but the sickos are all around on LimeWire, that is why I have put the whole program down for downloading adult content because it just isn't worth it because you have a chance of getting arrested or getting stuff that you don't really want to even look at.....but someone out there thinks that you do because you downloaded it, like the feds being one...

I suggest just looking on google or some other sites that have free porn like thehun.com or any other site that is free of charge porn, they are all around the web, and it is very rare to find child pornography because the feds bust child pornography sites very fast, if you search for a porn video or picture on google you will not find any cp content....that is why I use it.

My son was arrested in VT while he was in college and we go to court Mar. 20th for the arraignment. He did as many of you have talked about-he typed in porn and got alot of downloads and just downloaded them all wihput checking to see what they were and many of them were mistitled. Somehow those doenloads got shared to Itunes and someone from his school got them and turned him in. He didn't even know what he had downloaded and they arrested him. He had never been in trouble in his life now he is being treated like a sexual predator and who know what will happen. His life may be ruined-Who is going to go after Limewire and these websites that are aloowing this to happen. I don't get it-We go after the drug kingpins but not the cp ones. The law is proscuting the kids that get caught up in the filth without even knowing what is happening. Something has to be done before many of you go to jail for innocently thinking you are searching for porn-Maybe it should go back to like it was in my day where Playboy, Penthouse and Hustler were the porn rescources.

Does that make sense that the files could be shared through ITunes without someone knowing?

Who says the pictures of nude girls are porn... The Russian girls at some of the nudie sites are the sweetest chicks on the web.

Pornography is when these same sweet chicks are being sexually assaulted or abused, anyone who checks the mainstream sites looking for piccy's of nude girls, is very soon going to be confronted with images of very young people undergoing abuse, indeed torture, beatings, r*pe... so where the hell is the FBI.

In many countries girls are routinely wed in their early teens, in much of Africa a woman will be a grandmother while still in her thirties, Jesus mother was said to have been married at fifteen, even as she was with child.

So what is wrong with a younger girl putting her photographic portfolio on the net if she wants to... if the money is right, and the conditions under which the shots are taken comply with the models union rules... and where they can rely on police protection against exploitation and abuse, and lets get the pornographers arrested and off the street, and a few rules in the industry.

Much more important than accidentally downloading a few dodgy files is having your identity and credit card details stolen and used for criminal activities.

I came across this story today on the BBC website whereby this man had his life almost destroyed because an online site that he used to buy goods from was not as secure as it should have been.

It isn't that bad: If you have sharing disabled, you won't turn up on a search (Shareaza had that enables, as far as I know, but all others don't - because of technical concerns, not security: Polluting searches with incomplete files was seen as bad).

But you will be seen as download candidate by people who also download the file.
 
You can not avoid the **** that comes from the web, but I feel that LIMEWIRE should be able to remove this rubbish and anyone who deliberately carries such filth should be wiped off the limewire system. If not I will be one to no longer use a program that supports this. A pity but we have to start somewhere. also it is possible to hack and create hell. I have already been able to get sufficient ID to pass to interpol and some have been prosecuted already. more will follow if more IT experts take the trouble to wipe these porn merchants. They are making more money than the legal clean sites. Worst of all there is no way to protect the innocent.

I didn't see the erase option on my spybot(free verssion).
 
At the end of the day, if the title says 12 yr old etc, dont down load it, you dont want it, so ignor it, download the older ladies like me lol.

If you dont download it, you wont get into trouble, and lets be honest only pedo's want to download it, so they deserve to be caught anyway. Perverts

Best way of making sure no data is recovered.
1. take hard drive out of computer
2. Lay it on a flat hard surface
3. Take hammer and smash it into dust.
4. then dump into salt water.
5. dump it's pieces in different places.
That and only that will make sure it is never found on your computer.
Data recovery is so far ahead of the game that no program will delete it. Don't think for a moment it is. I don't care what you want to delete old pictures or tax returns Never give a hard drive away with the computer, never think that hard drive is dead and put in the trash, make sure take apart a burn the disk in. Now for flash memory it is in old cell phone or camera same hold true. It can be recovered.
