Terminator: Salvation - surprised!

Yup. That, of course includes that fact that, whilst Judgment Day has been pushed back, Terminator technology has probably been brought forward (maybe by 10 years or so) by the discovery of the T800 pieces in the 1980s and 1990s.

As Connor says in the trailer "This isn't the future my mother warned me about, I'm not sure if we can win this war."

BTW, was that line in the final film? I didn't spot it.

No you're not - I loved it! It's the only one of the 3 I've bought on DVD (I would get T2 if I could get the theatrical version - the director's cut is awful)

Trailer looks good.

Saw Terminator Salvation yesterday, first showing in Plymouth.

Christian Bale's performance was somewhat too intense for me, a bit OTT. Sam Worthington was much much better (as Marcus Wright - a convicted murderer). And I was really impressed by the performance by Ms Jadagrace Berry (as Star).

On top of that a very pleasant suprise near the end of the movie.

Action from top to bottom. Gets 9.75/10 from me.

I did miss seeing our Ms Action, Summer Glau, though - but that shouldn't really be counted as a measure of the quality of this movie.

Last time I can remember a film being so enjoyable was "Beetlejuice", which is completely different, and I'm sure a few would not agree with me on that.

I'm not sure if I remember that exact line, but he said something similar to Kate after they'd discovered what Marcus was. He said he thought he knew all about what the machines were capable of, but there was nothing in his mother's tapes about half-human Terminators.

Which isn't surprising really, seeing as Sarah only got her Intel from a 2-day stint with Kyle Reese! John seems strangely fixated on his mother's information on the Terminators, when she never, ever saw the future war.

He knows as much as she does, based on his own life experiences prior to the war. By the time of Terminator Salvation, his knowledge should well exceed hers.

the having to wait is annoying me as well & I'll ignore the reviewers as I want to see this more than I did Star Trek or Wolverine

Me and my OH saw this last night and we both liked it.
I was distracted throughout most of the film by a bit of cloth /wire dangling from the top of the screen and once i'd noticed it i kept looking at the bloody thing:mad:

Agreed!

And agreed again!

But that is the thing, if you watch the first two they are anything but mindless action flicks, that is what has made T3 and T4 different from T1 and T2. There is a lot in those firms to give the viewer think about.

There was something special about the first two. They had a good and (looking at it objectivly) a simple story flowing through each film (even if the whole underlying theme was a bit more complex), that all the action shots really added too well. They didn't seem too over done as it were, there were not any sceens where you though, gash this is just FX and seems a bit pointless really. A lot of the non action shots were actually pretty simple, but just looked really good and added to the story, e.g. in T2 when the terminator trod on the roses etc.

As for the new one, looked like they took a plot, added too many charactors, and tried to think of as many shots where they could use as much fx as possible, that in my opinion didn't really add anything too much to the story.

I was disapointed with T3, and wasn't expecting the best for T4, and unfortunatly it met my expectations, not up to T1 or T2!

Out of interest does anyone know why James Cameron didn't direct T3 and Jonathan Mostow did?

I'm sure it is.

But being that is what the police reported when they dropped the charges against him, I'm more inclined to believe it than the tabloid tat sold by his mother and sister.

After all, one story is "film star is nutter who attacks women," and the other actually involves details and motivations.

Agreed!

he stated that he had concluded the entire story with the end of T2. when they asked Arnie if he would do T3, he said no initially because Cameron wasnt involved - but Cameron came to Arnie and said Terminator is as much of your thing as it is mine - except nothing less then $30 million to do it!

t3 is an okay film - but nothing on par with T1 or T2. but for me, this new movie was very much enjoyable, and much better then I ever expected.

They want a new trilogy out these new movies.
T5 already in the works

and then there will be T6!!!

I personally thought that John Connor was going to die. With Marcus taking over his identity and 'becoming' John Connor. I thought that would have been a much better and stranger ending with a good twist.

I thought it was pretty good. Bale is too gruff, and seemingly is becoming a one-character actor. He neeRAB to do some comedies and lighten up a bit.

The guy which played Marcus was excellent, very watchable actor.

saw it last night and thought it was quite good. I will agree about Bale. He has the charisma of a pile of poo, but Sam Worthington is a star of the future. Cant remember much about the other films so I cant compare, but what REALLY pissed me off was the quality of the picture on the screen. I dont go to the cinema much now, but I get a clearer picture on my tv and I am SURE there was no surround sound there. When are Cineworld and the others going to screen in HD. I just cant believe they dont all do it now.
Transformers 2 looks like it will be MUCH better.

John listening to Sarah's tapes is just another stupid script decision. After all he's been through there's no way he would need to listen to them. It's as though they wanted fans to go 'cool, he's listening to Sarah'. McG is the biggest idiot ever! T4 feels like it was directed with the aid of a sledgehammer and little else.

Funny you should say that - my girlfriend and I went to see it yesterday (Lowry, Manchester) and although we enjoyed the film, we are looking forward to the blu-ray release so we can watch it in HD. Like you, it's rare we go to the cinema these days, mainly because of the expense, but also because films look so much better in HD at home. I know you can't match the size of screen and volume of soundtrack at home, but for picture clarity blu-ray is definately the way forward. At the cinema it kind of looks how a dvd now looks at home - picture a little bit washed out and blurry, whereas blu-ray has more vibrant colour and much sharper picture.

As for the film itself, it was really Marcus' story, with a bit of John Connor thrown in. I imagine the next one, should there be one, will be a more Connor-centric experience. Overall I thought it was a good film, and I don't understand the bashing it's got over in the USA. Maybe it's because of the change of setting - all previous Terminator films have been set in the present day, whereas this one is set in the future, during the war, and therefore is alot more bleak, more like a futuristic war film than the previous one man vs machine films.

Regarding this, and the "slower pace" comment - to acomodate the extra bits without having to rejig and extend the soundtrack...they quietened down the soundtrack, much the same way Lucas did with the last 15 mins of "Star Wars IV.

But in the case of T2, one of the factors driving the pace was the pounding soundtrack in the background. Once this was lost the film lost a lot of its impact.

Personally, T3 has grown on me - if only for the last five minutes and Ultimate Joke of "John Connor leading the Resistance" because he just happened to end up sitting in the President's Bunker  Given that the character was a w@nker :D

I agree with the last two, but though Bale wasn't at all good. Where Worthington and Yelchin (who got the voice and mannerisms of Beihn perfectly) played it straight and appropriately, Bale seemed to overact somewhat.
