Seth MacFarlane to Reboot The Flintstones

Yeah, uh, so I was referring to it replacing The Simpsons.

There's no more room.
FG, AD and TCS aren't going anywhere since they do well in Syndication
Plus, they won't be announcing a replacement for Burgers, Gregory or Dynamite this early.

It makes so much sence. With The Simpsons gone, they're gonna need an equally as sucessful show to fill the void.

To be fair, how much involvment does he have in TCS? I heard he just got the show made and the guy who voices Cleveland does the rest.

Also, American Dad! and Family Guy are actually pretty different from each other, sure they have some similarities, but not enough for me to think they're basically the same.

This argument makes no sense to me. I like Family Guy. More than I like South Park. But since he produces two other shows with the same formula, I'm supposed to automatically hate on any future products he is attached to? We don't even know what plans he has for the Flinstones.

MacFarlane is a fan of the original series; I'm pretty sure he'll just keep the characters in the form that he fondly remembers and viewers are most familiar with: Fred and Barney as working shmoes, Wilma and Betty as their wives and Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm as small children. I don't think anybody would want to see a series that took place post "I Yabba Dabba Do"; nobody wants to see Fred and Barney as grandparents. They'd lose their merch appeal.

That's what I said when the prospect of a new Flintstones series was previously brought up in another forum, but to be fair, one could say the same about The Simpsons or Scooby-Doo.

I think Seth is better off using the original versions of the characters, with Pebbles & Bam Bam as babies. Remember, neither Seth or his crew know how to write teenage girls, so if they up the kid's ages, we'll ultimately see Pebbles with little to no screentime.

My only wish, however, is that they avoid using a laugh track for this show. That's what ruined MANY a Hanna Barbera cartoon for me.

You know, when the HB cartoons were dubbed to Spanish they took the soundtracks out. I was surprised when I saw them in English and there was canned laughter.

But yeah, I agree, unless it's for a gag, laughtracks don't really work on cartoons.

Well, this is a surprise. I've never actually seen a full episode of the Fox shows Seth MacFarlene has worked on like Family Guy, but I'm pretty aware of the tone and kind of humor that those shows have. I do hope that he doesn't do that for this reboot. Even though I'm not a huge fan of The Flintstones, I don't think that a reboot would work well with the kind of adult humor that is associate with his more well known works. While I know that he has worked on kids cartoons before and I think he could make the reboot work with a more family-friendly kind of tone, the main reason I'm unsure about it is really because it's airing on FOX, instead of something like Cartoon Network. Still, I'm curious enough to see more about what he plans to do with this reboot.

why do thoughts of that digusting yogi bear short that use to appear from time to time on adult swim run through my head when i heard the man behind family guy is rebooting the flintsones no idea he made dexter lab, jonny bravo or cow and chicken and i did enjoy those show once before i started pefering loony toon comedy to toliet humor which cow and chicken had a lot of so who knows if i even get televison again i might watch an episode or two.

This is pretty much true. I always thought him being credited on Cleveland Show was more of a lip service and a thank you from Mike Henry, since it was Seth's star power that got Cleveland Show off the ground, but the whole concept of the Cleveland Show was Mike Henry's. Sure he voices like one main character on the show, but it's not really that much. That and I rarely see MacFarlane's name on Cleveland Show outside of the Executive Producer and Voicing credits.

In AD's defense, it's not exactly the same as FG. While both shows are about families, it doesn't have any cutaways and its humor is more character-based than FG's onslaught of pop culture references. It also seems to have more respect for its characters than FG does, as they usually don't go OOC just for the sake of a gag. Because of this, I generally enjoy it more.

But TCS is just rubbish. What little I saw of it was more than enough for me.

When this series will be dubbed in French, I wonder which VA could fit closely the voice then the late Paul Berval gived to Fred Flintstone in the French Flinstone dub broadcasted in Quebec, Canada?

And I read some comments by various posters posted on the article. One mentionned the Jetsons, Smurfs and Josie & the Pussycats, Another wished for a reboot of the British puppet animated series Thunderbirds, maybe Matt Stone and Trey Parker could handle this one but that's another story.

Now if someone could reboot Rocket Robin Hood... ;)

Seth can't ruin the Flintstones, they were already ruined a very long time ago in the 70's and 80's.

Some might even go as far as when Pebbles was born, and Fred lost his edge and became soft.

What's the worst that could happen? I'm willing to give this a shot, considering that I do like the other MacFarlane Shows and I do enjoy the Flintstones. I just hope for the best and that it holds onto the tone of the original show. The only thing that does surprise me about this is this show is heading to FOX. I imagined that a Flintstones reboot would have aired on Cartoon Network first.

I agree that the three MacFarlane shows have proven themselves to be all three unique series with diferent writers and show runners. So that's not too much of a concern.

The similarity that these shows do have, however, more has to do with the general TV-14 raunchiness of Animation Domination and FOX than anything else. I share the opinion that I think Flintstones humor should be more innuendo-driven then raunch-driven, and I hope the staff makes a good compromise in terms of humor and tone.

I'll add that I actually *want* this project to succeed, if McFarlane can produce a faithful, low-key reboot, it will really show some growth as an artist.

See, I'm not as averse to it as I was when the initial shock thrust itself upon me. I think MacFarlane gets that these characters are a brand, and should be treated in a certain manner, he's not that stupid. I think so long as the writing is clever, but only subtle as far as the risque manner goes (meaning a TV-PG at the most for it), I'd like to see how it goes. The animation has to be provided by WB and Hanna-Barbera though, that is the only stipulation.

What I would hope for, but doubt it since Fox has a policy of every prime time cartoon has to be about a family, is have go back to its roots and have no Pebbles and Bam Bam in the show at all.

Or better yet, a prequil series in which all four characters are singles, Fred and Wilma are just dating, Barney and Betty are just dating.

....... Seth doing Flintstones. Yeah I think I just died a little inside.

As the old saying goes... "If it ain't broke.... DON'T FIX IT!"

Im sorry I just don't see this turning out well.

I'll stick with the origional Hannah-Barbara series thank you very much.
