Seth MacFarlane to Reboot The Flintstones

I'm actually for this. Anything Seth MacFarlane and his writers do with the Flintstones has got to be better than anything Warners has done with them since they bought out Hanna-Barbera (that is to say virtually nothing at all).

And its not like the Flintstones haven't been put through the ringer already; some of those 70's and 80's spinoffs are downright abysmal. MacFarlane's stuff at its worst isn't as bad as The Flintstone Kids or the Flintstones Comedy Hour.

You know, it's funny, given what was allowed to happen to virtually every other old school HB star (inlcuding the Fintstones) through Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law, Space Ghost: Coast to Coast, and Sealab 2021, everyone's getting riled up about this?

I don't know what McFarlane's got planned for the show, but I doubt we'll be seeing things like having Judy Jetson eaten by wolves, Apache Chief suing over hot coffe disabling his 'growth' powers, or Shaggy getting busted for pot use.

Seth MacFarlane doing a new The Flintstones remake series is gonna be awesome as much as I enjoyed those great Flintstones parodies in Family Guy and since the new He-Man/Transformers/G.I. Joe/Scooby-Doo/Looney Tunes remake series have been great and the new Thundercats remake will be coming soon as well, I'll be sure to see what design style he might use which would be like Family Guy's design style, but I'll see and can't wait, go Seth:eek::D:anime:!!!!!!

It's gonna be great if Wilma/Betty/teenage Pebbles will be very hot/attractive in Seth's design style as well.

Its actually very easy to see why people would call him those things. Just look at FG in its original run and what it became after they brought it back. The show has a fraction of the effort put into that it used to have and the whole thing is saturated in pomposity and preachiness. The only thing under his banner since 2005 that's any good is AD. And that only took off AFTER he removed himself from the writing process. Also, have you seen any of his public appearances? He comes off as really smug and insincere.

Oh goodie. I can just see it: jokes and storylines about Bamm Bamm impregnating Betty and Fred making jokes about gays, the disabled, the elderly, immigrants, etc,. (hey, Seth would reason, it's not that hard to imagine Fred doing that!) Rapid fire cuts and characters laughing at their own jokes. Dino gaining the ability to talk and being the most intellectual character in the show.

What have I missed?

Yeah, see you're missing an important point....

The Flintstones isn't a kids show. It was aired in primetime on ABC, and was sponsered by a cigarette company.

It was made in the 60's, so it looks incredibly tame today, but back then, it would have been the Family Guy of it's time. I remember reading that it was the first TV show to ever show a husband and wife sharing the same bed.

I'm curious to see how this is going to work. And let's not forget, it's not FOX that's going to be producing the show, they're only going to be licensing/airing it. And I doubt WB's just going to hand over one of their prime properties to let McFarlane do whatever he wants. They'll keep closer tabs on what he can and can't do more than Fox does.

I think the main reason for doing this is so that Adult Swim will have a McFarlane show on the block that's 100% theirs (well, WB's, at least).

Sounds like just one more step towards Sunday night being rebranded as
Seth McFarlane's Animation Domination.

They just need to get rid of The Simpsons.

One Family Guy cutaway gag featured Barney taking a poop inside a bird's mouth. Another had Fred complaining about wanting to "get my rocks off" with Wilma, and calling her a rhymes-with-witch.

That's what we're gonna get with a MacFarlane version of The Flintstones. It's going to be every bit as crass as his previous shows. Count on that.

I've never actually cared about the Flintstones that much so this news is like "Eh. I'll check it out"

It's scary how well this fits though.

Except you can't count on that, you can't judge the show yet based solely on jokes that he made in another show. You never know if this reboot is going to be in the same style as Family Guy, or if it will be true to the original.

Anyways, I'm personally looking forward to this. I don't really understand why people are suddenly putting The Flintstones on the same level pedestal as something like the Looney Tunes, especially since no one has really payed any attention to The Flinstones in years, so I think that this could easily work out. Bring it on Seth, show me what you can do.

Holy crap, can we not do this? This thread is about a proposed reboot of a classic television show, not a place to make the same tired Family Guy criticisms that have circulated for years and personal attacks against MacFarlane.

I could be totally off base here, but somehow I think he will make an effort to honor this. He did start at Hanna-Barbera, and grew up watching the original show... I think it could work.

If it feels like Family Guy in the stone age, however, I am going to be very disappointed with him. Let's wait and see.

Yeah uh I'm going to need way more evidence then "there's no more room on the schedule" as a reason for them ending/cancelling the Simpsons. There was a lot of talk and rumors all the way back around Season 13 the show would only go for another year and that it's end would come around show 300. 10 years later around show 500 it's still going. Until we have absolute concrete evidence of the team finally stepping down and ending the series I see no reason to think something like this is the ultimate proof of the series ended.

As for MacFarlane rebooting the Flintstones well I can see the good and bad of it. It's obvious he's a big fan of the series (as it is one one of the things that inspired his own animation career) and he does seem to be a big fan. On the other hand though his follow up series American Dad and The Cleveland show did only marigianl efforst to try and differentat themselves from Family Guy. I guess American Dad's excuse was it was coneieved at a time when Family Guy was cancelled and it was suppose to be the only MacFarlane show and Cleveland is a spinoff so it shouldn't be that different. But how many excuses can we give a team for making three shows with many interchangable plots/characters/jokes? Speaking of jokes, weren't there quite a bit of Flintstone cutaways in Family Guy? That better not be how the MacFarlane team handles an actual Flintstones reboot: Having the old continuity but doing it in their own comedic style. Honestly I still say if there was another show it should be MacFarlane branching off into something completley different like an action or more drama show. And you know not another animated sitcom since he milked that cow dry. And just using someone else's original cow to try and squeeze fresh milk from dosen't always work. Eh I'm sure I'll wind up watching it but I at least want to see actual evidence first of how he differeantes this from his other shows first before I consider this an actual good idea instead of just him living out a dream and annoying the fanbase again.

The question I'm wondering is: Are they going to bump a McFarlane show (American Dad) for a new McFarlane show (Flintstones)?

They'll almost have to put this show on after the Simpsons, meaning Bob's Burgers will have to go 9:30. They're obviously not going to yank Family Guy, and since Cleveland Show is obviously being favored over AD, that'll go to 7:30. If Flinstones starts at the start of the season, are they going to outright cancel American Dad since it's only been renewed through 2013?

I certainly hope not, because AD's the best McFarlane show going at the moment.
