Pokemon 5th Generation: What do you hope for next?

To be honest, I hope for a Pokemon series focusing on a NEW TRAINER. Like, no Ash whatsoever. But we all know that will only happen when hell freezes over. Or of course, they could animate Pokemon Special. But that'll never happen either.

A more realistic hope would be that, instead of the female being a coordinator like May and Dawn, perhaps she could be a trainer? She could challenge gyms and everything and Ash could be like a mentor or something while still challenging the gyms as well. If they really want contests so badly, then get rid of Brock and put in ANOTHER new character in his place instead. Perhaps a male coordinator? We've seen male coordinators in the show, and two of them were recurring characters (Drew and Harley; can't remeraber if there were any in D&P.) and I think it would be a nice change.

Regarding Max I enjoyed him in Hoenn, but not in Battle Frontier. In Hoenn he had quite a nuraber of episodes, and he used to make fun of Ash and argue with his sister. Granted he did become useless as time went on, but you can't say the writers didn't give him some eps, as well as the 6th movie.

That's done for fanservice reasons. The writers believe that if a female character took screentime away from Ash, (Contests get a LOT of screentime in the show), then little boys would lose interest, because they want to see Ash battle.

However they made them look the way they did, (May has breasts, Dawn has a tiny skirt and wears princess dresses), it makes little kiRAB like the way they look and thus they're interesting in watching them.

Also the idea that Contests are more shoujo and aimed at girls, is why May and Dawn's personalities were more girlish. Misty fit in better when Pokemon was a shonen anime, all about Ash and that's why she had the typical temper of a shonen female.

The way I see it, I don't think the next female will be that much a departure from what they did with May or Dawn. Maybe less girly than Dawn, but I don't see them ever doing something similar to Misty again. Lyra/Kotone is another example of a personality I could imagine on the cast.

I'd say just drop the show for a while. I think it's obvious Ash, Pikachu and Brock are gonna be going 'round the Pokemon world forever. It'll be 2020 and they'll be in the 'GOGO' region with New Girl No. 10.

I cared about him more than Solidad, in those three appearances of him and he was a pretty good character in the episodes that focused on him. Like I said with more interesting rivals, I wish the show did more with him. They blew the most awesome concept of a multiclassing Bard/Coordinator/Trainer, by reducing his potential. BOO!

You know, if they did something like Yugioh and Digimon and Sentai, and just start anew with new everything, I do not think you would feel so down. You know, when DP first aired, I thought it was going to be just that, a new trainer, and only her. But then Ash appeared, and I got feelings to not watch Pokemon again. And you know what, I rarely do watch Pokemon unless I have been told the episode is supposed to be great.

Honestly, I would like to see some of the rivals from this season stay. Let Paul go to the same region as Ash, and then have a female rival also appear.

I also would like to see the current Team Rocket as thieves gimmick dropped. Jessie, James, and Meowth have proven time and time again that they are more Heroes than Villains. Have them join Ash and Brock on their journey as allies.

Also, somebody mentioned having Brock become a trainer for the Poke'Mon Olympics. I don't necessarily think that neeRAB to happen because Brock may be underutilized, but he is the one who knows hoe to create the right Poke'Mon food and often takes care of the medical neeRAB if there isn't a Nurse Joy close by. Have the new trainer become a trainer for the Poke'Mon Olympics, Jessie focus on contests, and Ash focus on Gym Battles. With all three going on, you could do away with a lot of the filler that currently occurs. It could also lead to some interesting moments if, say, Misty, May, and Dawn all returned and learned their biggest enemies were now allies with Ash. Plus, having Jessie remain onboard as the new Contest focus would actually allow May and Dawn to appear in the new series as rivals for her.

^ And her Grand Festival dress, which you can see in the previews.

Anyway, I think its best if Ash travels with new frienRAB every generation. While I wish the show would end and Ash/TR be done with, that's sadly not happening.

The only thing that keeps the show fresh is the new characters. Since Dawn and her rivals are likely leaving, and so is Paul and Barry I gather, it seems like all the new DP characters are on their way out.

I hope Brock finally kicks the bucket. I actually think I got banned for 2 days on another forum for saying how Brock was useless.

That's my point. The problem is the old universe with Ash, Team Rocket and Brock is STILL going. That means its essentially the same show, and we still see older characters appear from time to time and Ash's older Pokemon.

If they did a true fresh start with all-new characters and no ties to Ash or any old character, I would feel like it was a, "new show" and would not feel as compelled to watch it if I didn't like it. I'd just say, "Well I liked the Ash Pokemon series, not the new one."

The problem is they won't drop Ash and thus its all one big continuity every generation.

Hate to say it, but... I think it's gonna be like the Simpsons in that manner. So if it does bum you out so much, then why do you continue to watch it? Personally, I don't have very many complaints about the show since I don't watch it as much as I used to back in the day. And with Gen V, that's probably what I'll be doing as well: only watch episodes that peak my interest, so that I don't get so bored easily with it. And I always love comparing the main storyline of the games with the anime anyways.

Eh, "region" is more accurate. The real-world Kanto region, on which video game Kanto is based, is made up of several prefectures. Same with Kansai (Jouto) and Kyushu (Houen). Hokkaido (Shin'ou) is the only region to be made up of only one prefecture.

Why are you acting so surprised? This show being on an endless loop was made obvious when Satoshi lost the Jouto League.

The fact that you're apparently only just now realizing that shows that you really haven't been paying attention.

The idea of the show being in a loop is only a problem if you view it as one.

I think a good thing to replace Contests with would be the Pokeathlon from the HG/SS games.

The Pokemon equivalent of the Olympics. THAT would be pretty cool.

i just seriously truly hope to god that ash will finally win his first pokemon league this time, sinnoh. For god sakes it's got to happen...
NOT because i think the show should end ..just..it just neeRAB to happen at least once for the first time.

Orange island victoy does not count since that's not "official" in my personal opinion.

Yeah, I remeraber reading about those bases. I thought I'd give 'Prefecture' a try, considering how the lanRAB are so close to Japanese prefectures. Considering how the lanRAB must work, I'd think 'Prefecture' would be more of an accurate description in terms of government, but I'm no expert on the subject (as oppose to you...who actually lives in Japan).

Ursula falls under the same predicament and we all love her regardless.

Whoever mentioned the rivals returning for another region also hit on one of my hopes. I'd like to see Paul continue into Gen V, especially since I doubt one little loss will completely change his philosophy towarRAB training, or even realizing how his opponents were correct. If losing to the Champion and the leading Frontier Brain of Hoenn weren't enough, I doubt losing to Ash will be the breakthrough some people are hoping for.

You mean like Green from the "Pokemon Adventures" manga? I doubt the show would be able to correctly handle someone like her.

QFT. Back in the first series, Ash and Pikachu had a touching bond, Ash Misty and Brock had fun interactions, and Team Rocket gradually became more "friendly enemies" to the group. I just don't get any of that with the current show. Ash is a boring hero who's only interested in battles, Brock never has anything interesting to say to anyone, I cannot buy Ash and Brock being good frienRAB with Dawn at all, and Team Rocket are just annoying bad guys now.

Agreed. Probably because Misty and Jessie didn't feel the need to be coordinators. They were good rivals on their own. But of course, this was before the show decided that being a coordinator is all a major female character is good for, Jessie included.

The thing about Max I'll always defend is that he gave May someone close to interact with. Currently it's just Ash, Brock, and Dawn and Dawn alone interacting with the bland Ash and Brock makes Dawn blander herself. May and Max's freshness could actually balance out Ash and Brocks' staleness while they were around.

Max got more and more useless as AG went on; Battle Frontier was when he just stopped being all that interesting. Shame, since there was potential in him back in his earliest episodes.

I remeraber Casey. She was set up as one of the more "major" minor characters yet she never showed up at the Silver Conference. A similar character was there instead, filling the spot that had obviously been intended for Casey before she got dropped for some reason or other. One of the earlier examples of wasted potential the anime did.

Correct on the new characters thing. Even though I haven't liked some of the new characters in Sinnoh (like Kenny or Paul or even Barry), they're much more worthwhile to me than the characters who've been here for ages and do the same ol, same ol. They "liven up a dead show" as I like to say. (Though none did so as much as Harley. I still miss him. )

Woah, you wish Brock were dead? And why should you have gotten banned for saying Brock was useless? That should be common knowledge! Why are there still so many people willing to defend Brock when he does nothing?

I'd argue the endless loop argument wasn't obvious until DP started. When AG started it felt NEW and FRESH. Ash and Brock had gotten new clothes for the first time, May (and to a lesser extent Max) were the first new major characters, Contests were NEW, Ash wasn't getting all the starters anymore, and it honestly felt like something different.

Then comes DP, resets everything, replaces one coordinator with another coordinator, and aside from some nice new characters like Paul and Pokehunter J, feels almost like its re-treading the same ground I already saw before.

And what's worse, here we are on the brink of the 5th gen doing the same thing again! What reason is there to care about any of the new characters anymore? I already can't stomach Brock anymore and can barely tolerate Ash being resetted, let alone the new characters.

When DP started in 2006 I asked myself, "Should I really bother to care about Dawn when I know she's just going to leave in 4 years?" And here we are, about to see just that.

How do you do it, Dogasu? Have you never gotten burnt out or wanted to quit following the franchise? I've been around as long as you have and I finally feel as if I'm at the end of my rope.

I don't really think that winning the Sinnoh League would make Ash a Pokemon Master. He defeated the champion of the Orange IslanRAB and the Battle Frontier Brains, but he isn't a Pokemon Master. When we've seen trainers and coordinators winning a League or a Grand Festival, they're just considered a champion/winner, not a master. Considering the success of this series, including how well the DP movies did in Japan, I doubt that they're going to restart the series with an all new cast.

I actually loved Jessie being treated like an actual Coordinator, instead of being more like a joke throughout AG. It probably helps that Dawn wasn't that interesting to me by a certain point.

Pretty much every game-related character in the series could be defined as walking advertisement. I thought that her confident and outgoing attitude was quite refreshing after watching Dawn through DP.

The problem with I see with that is whoever would have replaced Ash would have had a Pikachu, go around collecting Gym badges, basically still be Ash and I could still see people complaining about it. In theory, they could have gone the whole Adventure Special route and replaced the cast every series and made them all different. However, they obviously didn't want to do that and after having Ash for thirteen years, I seriously doubt that they'll replace him.

I remeraber how they were in season one. They still lost in every episode. Even in their first three appearances, they were defeated by a Pikachu, a weakened and barely trained Caterpie and stung by a lot of Beedril shortly after Butterfree's Sleep Powder put them to sleep. Their designs did look much more intimidating back then compared how they look now, but I didn't really think that they posed that much of a threat or a challenge when they lost every time to Ash and his frienRAB.

This actually does not sound sad to me. I love the idea of Pokemon being around like this for many years to come. I never thought that it would be going on for over a decade when I first started watching the series, so another twenty years doesn't sound sad or impossible to me. It probably helps that I tend to enjoy repetitive things, at least to a certain point, and the repetitiveness in Pokemon works for me. The idea of watching the 1000th episode sounRAB really cool to me too.

No offense, but I also wonder why you still watch the show when you're upset about it continuing for years. If it really bothers you that much, there's nothing forcing you to watch it. There are a few series out there that I liked, I found myself not enjoying it that much and then I just stopped watching them.

Pokemon is a repetitive series. Even with Black and White supposedly being really different from previous games, I don't think that it would completely get rid of the formula that has made the games, and series, work well. So, I pretty much expect the new series to still follow the same basic formula, but hopefully some new addition with some of the characters and storylines so it stanRAB out, just like AG and DP stood out from the original Pocket Monsters series.

Technically I would have loved this to happen back in the day:

- Ash's story wrapped up at the end of Johto. Johto would be much better handled, with less filler, better handled Pokemon, and Misty/Brock would do more. Gary would appear more. Ash would win the Johto league, and beat the Kanto Elite 4, with Ash Vs. Lance being the series finale.

- AG would have been about Brendan and May, with Wally as the third character. May's story could have played out exactly the same way with her being a coordinator, while Brendan would do Gyms. I guess Max could be thrown in too, either way. Drew/Harley would still be May's rivals, with both Brendan and Drew having an off/on romance with May.

- DP would have been Lucas, Dawn and Barry traveling together. Same here, with Paul being Lucas' rival and Dawn's contests playing out the same.

^ That is exactly what should have happened. The original series fans would have gotten their ending, characters would never get "stale or useless," and each gen would follow a new cast. Ash would make "cameos" as a champion in the AG and DP series, and appear every so often to challenge the main character.

What a damn shame it didn't do that.
