*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia N97

Okay. What is it that a comparatively godlike laptop computer (maxed-out specifications, whatever that may be) with a 3G modem can do that our smartphones cannot, that could be practical on the smartphone? It's only gaming, demanding video playback, and professional applications that involve rendering like AutoCAD and Photoshop and whatnot. The latter is completely impractical in a smartphone. The former two can only go so far, and don't really matter to the majority of users since: 1. they would already consider or own a product that would do it better if available, be it in lieu of the N97 or supplementing it (i.e. on varying degrees of mobility, a PSP, laptop, PS3 or desktop computer perhaps) 2. most users won't need it or care for it.

If the N97 plays video well, that will be enough. The rest is with the failings of S60 as a platform.

One thing occurred to me. In the front page of NokiaUSA, the pre-order link for the N97 says "Be the first to get your hands on the new Nokia N97". Shouldn't that mean that we who pre-ordered with them should get our devices before those who pre-ordered somewhere else like Amazon or Dell?

Speaking of USB charging you reminded me of something I need to post here about that.

From the video they mentioned USB port for charging and there was no mention of a regular charging port.

If this is true, then it is terrible news for us.

Using this iPhone, the worst thing is this retarded USB charging.

I mean a USB port working under specification can deliver 500mAH at 5v. That's 2.5W per hour.

A E71 uses a battery that has 1500mAH at 3.3v or about 5 Watt-hours. So it will take 2 full hours to charge assuming perfect conversion (which obviously is not possible).

Contrast that with the wonderful Nokia hi-speed travel charger which delivers 800mAH at 5v. That's why our phones charge so fast. It is also why you can come home and charge your phone for 15 minutes and have enough battery for the whole evening.

Again contrast that with this PITA iPhone, which takes forever to charge. If I put it on the USB charge for 15 minutes it would be nearly useless.

That having been said the iPhone has a decent battery that when fully charged lasts a full day easily. The problem is keeping it hooked up to my computer for long enough to charge it fully. It is a PITA.

With that phone the proprietary cable adds a lot to that PITA. At least with the N97 you can somewhat hope that at a friend's house someone might have a MicroUSB cord around. They are still not very common but at least it is a standard.

Nokia had better not have removed the regular charging jack. I really don't want to deal with 2.5-3 hour charge times. It's a nice option to top up a battery here and there but at night I don't need this phone dangling out the side of my laptop like I have to do with this iPhone. For that reason alone I didn't use it today, I just switched the SIM and used my E66.

Hear is a picture posted on Symbian freak , yeah its defiantly a Texas instruments processor but the question is it OMAP3 or OMAP2 family processor ?

btw , FCC guyz must use a better Camera

I also noticed he didn't have any problems with the scroll bars on the menu because he was using his nails as opposed to his fingertips.

And holy crap, there's a Hi5 widget! I didn't think anybody used that anymore seeing that Facebook stole its juice.

The FCC guys don't use the camera. The documentation is supplied by Nokia. Their product pics went downhill when they started using their own cameras to take pictures. If you want to see some great high-rez pics check out the pics of the old E70-2. There was some great detail in those pics.

Yes, Pandora is free and similar to last.fm, I like Pandora better because I think is more "intelligent" with the related music it plays when you start a new radio, they use an algorithm/technology that they call "Music Genome Project" for this and it works very well (although sometimes I feel there's less variety than in last.fm).

Here's more info about it http://www.pandora.com/corporate/mgp

this phone is exactly like the htc touch pro my friend kept telling me about how sick the touch pro is and etc so i did a little research on it. its like identical to it. i feel so disapointed in nokia its not even funny they havent put out anything revolutionary since the N95! What other thing is messed up is the touch pro 2 kills the n97 with resoultion and what not which is crazy

I see... so there's one key on the keyboard that has 3 functions instead of two. If it is indeed ' when you press caps, they didn't really need to include the Blue symbol for it did they? Cause it's just another '. It would be impossible to press the blue key and the period key at the same time anyway.
