*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia N97

I've heard more about this YLOD in the past 2 weeks than I have the entirety of the PS3's lifespan. Are they all timebombs?

Also something I just noticed from pictures, don't remember it mentioned here - the chrome trim on the face is raised above the screen just like the border on the 5800. Wonder if this is a good or bad thing. I'd certainly prefer smooth.

You must have nails. :D

But anyway, I think the concept of having 3 widgets in the space of one is really the only solution to this issue. My question is how can I combine the 3 widgets I want into that space.

Will there be a tool for users to combine their widgets into that space, or do I have to hope that someone else in the world is simultaneously interested in current NYC weather, Google Stock price and Current Terrorism Alert Color?

You may be able to write your own widgets but I do not. I could learn perhaps to make my custom widgets and if it really is as simple as tweaking 3 independent widgets and cutting and pasting code I would do it. But I won't go out there and learn a programming language to do it.

Do you think for example I could put both my appointments and e-mail notifications in the same widget side by side or maybe display e-mail when an unread e-mail is in the inbox but otherwise show only appointments? Do you know if we have that level of flexibility with internal phone data?

Basically I think the widgets idea is great but I truly feel its potential is squandered by having internal and external widgets share space on only one screen.

If it so easy to make widgets for any conceivable data source, then having them compete with essential data (for me) like e-mail, and contacts for space was simply a poor decision. Really even if I could make one widget hold the shortcut for MFE + Calendar (BTW, I think the 5800 calendar active standby is one the best things about that phone) + weather that would be helpful.

What happened to the 5800's top right screen notifications? It doesn't seem to be on this model. That was again one of the best things about the 5800. It in fact does not show MFE e-mail in active standby but rather shows it on the top right hand corner similar to the standby screen less iPhone. It worked out, as long as I see the icon.

As for the 5800 and touch, I still think it needs a lot of patience and the stylus in some areas. For example in the download app, hit options and a sub-menu with a scroll bar pops up. This submenu has 10 items and requires you to scroll to reach the bottom. Above this submenu is pure black space. What is that space doing? Basic question. Instead they want me to scroll down to see all the options. This one is more of nit, but I wonder what they were thinking.

Go to search. First of all what is the point of having a stupid text box there and no keyboard? You can't do anything in there without a keyboard. So why must I click on the text box to bring up the keyboard?

Also there is no intelligence in the predictive text whatsoever. So I have to type things over and over it won't remember anything. On a keypad bearing device it is bad enough but on this it is worse. The industry is using intelligent predictive text to make touch text input more friendly. This has NOTHING. Well that's fine for a $250 entry device. Not for a $700 flagship which will be the same thing.

Anybody heard of these new mini-laptops coming out with SIM card slots? (By "mini" i mean the size of a eeePC), that'll shut most of you complaining about hardware, lol, 3 Ghz, dedicated video card, 4gb ram, 250GB, enough for you yet?? lol

Maybe so..depends on personal finances. Way I look at it is the Iphone is not here, the N97 is supposed to be here in a couple wks. If the N97 isn't what it's cracked up to be, then the Iphone is supposed to be the same $299 subsidized. So the worst scenario is losing what you paid for the N97 if it can't be sold (which it should be able to). I can live with that

Exactly, that's what I was talking about.

By way iPhone 3gS is 900$ on ebay for pre order, most people still cannot afford unlocked iPhone 3g. Some online retailers like popularelectronics, plemix, etc have outrageous prices.

I've only had brief use with touchscreen phones and it's never been my primary device but they've all been resistive touchscreens and I've had good experiences (HTC TyTN II, XPERIA X1, HTC Touch Diamond) except for the Samsung Instinct. Keep in mind that all Windows Mobile Professional phones are resistive (because WinMo doesn't support capacitive screens) so if you've ever used a WinMo phone, that's more or less how the experience is going to be.

We can't base ourselves on something dated from December 4th, 2008, that's last year! lol. But yea, whatever, I really don't see the logic in not putting the feature bar on the black version. Early pictures are from early prototypes, it could something as simple as they didn't know what font color to use on a black background... And again, I really wouldn't understand if they release one color before another color... phone racism, tsk tsk tsk

about you guys bickering about wanting 8mp over 5mp...well id rather have the 5mp sensor because the pixles are going to be less dense, leading to clearer and less noise pictures!

if nokia puts an 8mp sensor in it and its noisy as heck id bet you guys will be complaining. saying"nokia should of go with the 5mp!"

I would have preferred 16:10, like a computer monitor, such as my 24" Dell (where the standard isn't 1920x1080, but more like 1920x1200).

Really? I don't think it looks cheap, but I was expecting a "snap" from one position to the other rather than a springloaded toggle. As in, "up" would be locked and "down" would be unlocked or vice-versa.

The reason for that joshyth is because in NA we still have a lot of CDMA carriers. The GSM carriers we do have either have incompatible technology or frequencies (T-Mobile & AT&T for example) or are owned by the same company (Rogers & Fido) and don't want to offer the same phones in order to keep from one killing the other.
