*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia N97

No, I still don't get it. He reported both versions of the E75 going through the FCC and I'm telling you that only the Euro version of the N97 has gone through FCC and no NAM version yet. I'd be happier if the NAM version of the N97 showed up.

Handy Shell doesn't force anything on the S60v3 or v5 releases, I don't see why they'd do it on a possible N97-specific version. I just hope they allow for more customization, but I'm sure they're working on it as we speak.

No Vista/sidebar/gadgets for you? Wait til Windows 7. I'm running a pre-beta of it now and the sidebar has been transformed into free-form gadgets you can put all over your desktop (or dock them to the side of the screen, if you'd like) and each allows you to keep it on top of other windows. It's nice.

To add insult to injury, someone in Taiwan screwed up so my 5800 was delayed yet another day. Tomorrow is supposed to be the day instead. :(

Just a heads up for pre-orders. I pre-ordered an N97 on Monday. I called Nokia today to check the status, to make sure everything went smoothly and that they had my order in the system. The lady on the phone told me that all $500+ Nokia orders have to be verified to be sure that there is not any credit card fraud taking place. So, if you ordered an N97, give Nokia a call so you don't have any glitches with the order.

Well you already mentioned the 3430 which offers a lot more performance per cpu cycle than the 2420 does. Both are just over 2yrs old. Since Nokia has a long standing and substantial cpu purchase order on the 2420 it gives them a considerable leverage to change the order for a higher performing cpu - and TI the ability to highlight those Nokia products to show off its cpu power. Of course if utilized correctly in the N97 should Nokia negotiate with TI to use it; and if sales negotiations allow TI to use the N97 or future products from Nokia in advertisements without paying royalties to Nokia for using them in such a case.

When a product is still in prototype stage, the materials used for casing, paint, finishings, and also the internals can be changed up till the final stage has been agreed upon by:
SW Developers
Electrical Engineers
hardware designers
& (finaly) the end product being submitted to the FCC, CRTC, or other governing bodies.

IF it fails those governing bodies in testing - then its back to the the drawing board for the hardware designers & Electrical Engineers. Why? Well maybe the transmitting/receiving radios emitt too much radiation (higher than 2Watts for example), chips & circuitry exhibits issues with the user possibly being electrically shocked, or maybe the casing allows too much radiation to be emitted or some finish allows for the electrical shock or the paint maybe toxic. This latter situation occured with the initial low number batch of the SE w580 that even Rogers had initially sourced and both did a recall.

Case in point. SE's Xperia X1 gained a faster cpu cycle and 128MB more of RAM while 64MB of ROM was increased just 3mths before being FCC tested & released from production to shipping. Yet it was announced in March 2008. This N97 isn't going to ship until 1st half of 2009 or QTR 2 of 2009.

By then I do hope that the following is changed:
* S60 5th Edition allows for menu/Options shortcuts (similar to BB FW).
* OLED - with higher contast & brightness is used than that of the 5800.
* LCD is glued/cealed to the glass/plastic screen - no allowance for dust, and higher screen readability.
* More powerful ARM 9+11 CPU with much MUCH faster cpu cycles so that even with 10 running applications no LAG is detectable/perceivable even by the most avid Symbian Freak! In this day & age where the RIM Blackberry BOLD, Storm, iPhone 3G, and even the HTC & ASUS WM Pro devices are kicking upwards of 550 - 800Mhz (Asus on the later) cpu speeds on ARM9 compatible I'd love to see an S60 (3rd/5th) running at that speed. Seems those other OS' NEED that kind of speed to run smooth without lag, but can you imagine S60?! This IS their flagship is it not?

To be frank I think its too early for Nokia to announce the N97 to be the flagship for 2009 - it scars me because I think this'll sadly be another N96.

@Blaxx

I'm not sure just who your comment was aimed at but maybe you missed the fact that i said

"Now it may turn out to be a good device and i for one am reserving judgement until i get to use one my self."

So you see i don't hate it i just don't see it as being the best thing ever though and now just for you

Is it June yet? Is it June yet? Is it June yet?
I'm all over this thing! I'm in love with it gotta get one as soon as possible. Is it June yet?

ROFLMAO

@ming387

We most probably would if we seriously thought it would make a blind bit of difference personally i am sure Nokia through all the forums are more than aware of how many of us feel. They just aren't that bothered and will stick to their game plan until it really starts to cost them sales, market share and profits. Really the only way us users can show them how we feel is voting with our money and not just buying what ever they deem fit for us that's what i did last September and I am no closer to buying a Nokia again now.

Also in case anyone was curious about how the wallpapers scale like I was:

When in vertical it scales the image's height to 640 pixels and centers itself in terms of the width:

When horizontal it scales the image's width to 640 pixels and centers itself in terms of the height:

^ i clearly stated it was speculation and that it will have 256. i didnt say anywhere that i believe it, but i still think it would be sweet to have a phone with 512. of course it would need multitasking and many other features the iphone is missing.

Not all Nokia blogs are equal. Don't believe everything up and down that list. Even if it comes with a stylus, it doesn't look like anyone expects you to use it. Have you ever seen a video of someone using a stylus on this phone?

Do not freak out,

my friend is an Amazon Prime Member, his estimated shipping date for the Black NAM N97 moved today from June 6 to June 5!

I personally never had an issue multitasking with the 128 ram so the more the merrier, i was talking the 128 on nokia phones that is. :buddies:
Why not complain about the low resolution screen isnt it a bit outdated though, i mean thats like having 320x240 on a 2.6 inch hahaha they really need to step up there game with screen resolution even nokia is beating them with that hahaha.(sarcasm)

LOL could you imagine someone coming to the S60 thread and trying to read this entire thread from beginning to end? They probably would close their HoFo account after.

I've always got my phone with me, I've have the codes for most of the TV's and receivers that I might be in front of - in my place, places of friends and family, and like RogerPodacter said - for lowering volumes when you get seated at a restaurant or pub right in front of the TV.
