*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia N97

i visited the nokia flagship store in new york this past weekend...played with the n97 proto...and i must say that i was impressed...albeit a prototype...it was loading content very fast...

the screen feedback is incredible...very responsive...didn't even need to press the screen all that much...super easy to use with gloves on too...unlike the iphone...

the slide mechanism is uber solid...no wobbles...no squeaks...

the qwerty wasn't as well lit as i would like it to be on the black version though...

the device itself feels amazing in the hand...perfect size...a bit heavy...however very enjoyable to play with...

camera capabilities were ok...still a prototype and all...

the nokia clerk told me that the first batch will be available in store in about 2-3 weeks or so...

she had to pry me away from the thing...i didnt want to give it up...others wanted to play with it too... :)

I think you are asking if 3G (WCDMA) and 3.5G (HSDPA) are on different bands. I am pretty sure the answer is no. The N97 Euro will have both 3G and 3.5G on the 900/1900/2100 bands. While ATT uses 3G and 3.5G on either 850 only or 1900 only or 850 and 1900 depending on your area. So far ATT 3G and 3.5G are on 1900 only in the SF Bay Area. I have heard some parts of Southern California have both 850 and 1900. I think some smaller cities have 850 only. Hope that helps. :)

Yes, I'm sure some will like it, but you have to try it out yourself. I personally have not experienced a worse keyboard.....there's just no feel to them.

Do you guys think the n97 pre-order price will change once the phone is released? I'd hate for it to go higher than $699, especially when its $699 + bluetooth headset.

This is disappointing. I wonder how calling volume is. My n95-4 was the loudest of any phone i've had, and i'm loving the 5800 volume. I wish i knew how these types of design issues don't get addressed between models. Who runs the ship at nokia? Cause this happens too often where the good feature of one model does not get spread thru the entire lineup.

My point from earlier today..I don't think there is a dispute that as a "smartphone" or whatever the heck you wanna call it, we all agree that we would rather own the N97..however by the same token..one would have to be a fool to say that the "user experience" of the Iphone...Itouch..is much more satisfying and user friendly than the resistive N97...so what I am gonna do is just buy the 8GB Itouch and have it around to supplement the N97. When in a "pinch" (2 finger that is) I can tether the Itouch with the N97 using Joiku

White looks great in the press pictures but it looks really dull in all of the pictures i've seen in unboxings. I don't know which one I want anymore

There are other browsers for the N97 that are even faster then the stock browser. The only thing I prefer about the iPhone is the podcasting subscription features in iTunes and the syncing is nice. But I would expect no less from a music player and FAR more from a Cell Phone.......

The GUI is nice but I found out "slick" doesn't make up for functionality. I am more willing to live with a few quirks and warts to have a fully implemented device that can walk and chew gum at the same time.

That does suk. If the slider gives way its gonna be big problem. I'm gonna give this bad boy a month or so. So far it's a slick N95 IMO. Does no more..and a whole lot less than the N95 that's parked on my desk right now
