*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia N97

I like your response.

Maybe Nokia's problem is that they announce a phone way too early and then take forever to release. Other vendors will announce they will have phones (except for the pre) and not given them names or pre-release info.

Nokia has been rumored to have other touch phones in the works.

I would not be as beholden to Nokia if it was not for their superior RF.

I'm 26 - bought the n97 because I have had a good track record with nokia and with my husband gone to Iraq I need something to distract me (plus I want to get something good out of the army pay we are getting!)

Lol, something to hold me off till N97 comes out.

Lol, yea, I've already seen the light, I'm just waiting for something to come thru the light

That's why I never sold my N95-4. Most of the time I end up using it more then Innov8 and E71. I've over 70 apps installed in N95-4 and all are amazing apps.

8-12Mp would not matter if it's not a good lens. I recently bought W995, it's 8.1Mp is not as good as N95-4.

I watched iPhone 3gS conference live and I could not help, but laughed when the presenter bragged about video recording, when the letters ''video recording'' showed up on big screen, people applauded and shouted as if it's 1080p.I was like, what the hell? My 3 years old cell phone can record video and people did not have such strong applause even for Omnia i8910 HD during the launch. Imagine where Nokia would be if it had Apple's marketing strength.

Yeah, weather can work, though I'll most likely want some way to do weather at the place I'm not at (or I can just look up in the sky lol). For example, when I'm at work, I'll want to know the weather at home (if not in between) and vice versa. THAT will be the trick a weather widget will need to get me on it.

I will almost definitely be doing one of the stock tracking widgets. I do have a passing interest in the Facebook and LinkedIn widgets and could very well see the utility of the ebay and RSS widgets and am hoping there will be some interesting stuff that isn't popping into my brain housing group right now and will surprise me. If not right away in the next few months.

And have started on one of my own anyway. ;)

Right. If the reviews and usability of the OmniaHD don't fare better than the innov8 (particularly in battery and UI), that will compensate (and price disparity will only increase, but not because it's good!). If they do fare better, then it will indeed remain a preferred option for those that don't want/need QWERTY and more storage.

Recognizing the benefit and advantage of one phone does not mean the other one has to be garbage. Some people have reason to be wary of Samsung, just as others do with Nokia.

Touch Pro is also missing things like any type of flash at all, as well as the QWERTY and bands beyond 900/2100. There were more than a few complaints about it's UI, especially wrt the Touch Diamond.... The sum of N97's parts make it quite attractive to people that Samsung isn't choosing to compete on with the OmniaHD. Nothing wrong with that, but the importance of one feature over another is VERY subjective... as much as the disposable income one has.

A few questions.

What do you think about going back or forward in the browser when in full screen mode? Do you think the whole rigmarole is acceptable.

What are your thoughts about getting the correct zoom to fit a text column (which is what any web page consists of)? Do you just scroll side to side to read text or do you use the zoom bar on every page/text column to be able to read it?

Do you ever have the problem on the default zoom on Google it doesn't quite register your your attempt to enter the search field to enter text into it?

- I am having that problem right now. I didn't have it the last time I opened the browser. However this time I needed to double tap zoom to make it bigger so it would recognize my attempt to get into the search bar. I suppose using the stylus would also circumvent the need to double tap zoom in and double tap zoom out each time you want to enter text.

Yes you are right it does allow scrolling while the page loads now. That is a major improvement on the S60v3 browser. So if that is the case what is the issue behind those N97 videos showing the guy not being able to get the device to respond? Maybe unfinished FW?

Does your entire screen go black on EVERY little notification? For example I got "opening a secure page" notification twice when going to the Papa John's website. Each time the whole screen went black and all i could see is the notification on the bottom. Maybe it is the theme I am using?

Now I got "leaving secure web page continue" and every time it goes black and stays black until I respond. Then I got "opening a secure page. Content cannot be seen by anyone else. Continue?" Again the whole screen black. Then it happened again - twice in a row. All this happened because on the Papa John's mobile website I accidentally clicked into "restaurant locator" when I meant to go into "online specials and coupons" so the process of going back brought THREE such prompts that turned the whole screen black and required me to respond THREE times to go back ONE page because I didn't use the stylus to select "online specials and coupons" or otherwise double click zoom -> select.

AHHH **** I DID IT AGAIN! **** **** ****!!!!

Now I have to see THREE whole black screen notifications to go back. ****!!!

Seriously I didn't mean to do it and I'm not doing this for theatrics, I am tying to use this browser to see if there are deals and to order pizza.

Can I do this without throwing the phone onto the wall and watch in satisfaction as it breaks into pieces is the question.

Also, can I ask you if your 5800 does this:

When you click on "back" in the right softkey, it then shows you the mini maps of your history. When I clicked on the page immediately previous (which would be Papa John's mobile home page) it did not respond. When I clicked it again it actually scrolled to the mini map of the page I was just on which is the "restaurant locator" which I accidentally went into a second time. Does this happen to you?

I find that the only way for it to consistently go back a page is to hit the left softkey which is "select" I cannot just touch the image or mini map of the page.

I wish I could show you a video of all of this. But if you could please, tell me what exactly happens in your 5800 when you browse to Papa John's website and go to "restaurant locator" and then back a page. Is this only happening to me?

Okay now I am in specials. It is asking for my street address and zip code. In the default zoom I guess getting into either text box isn't in the cards for me. I tapped with my thumb 3 times already. Oh, okay it works now.

As a side note when you have a saved user name or entry in a text box how do select it without a stylus? I suppose you MUST always double tap zoom to effectively manipulate a text box or the saved information associated with those boxes. So there will be a lot of double zoom in and double tap zoom out.

I suppose you get used to that though. But I'm wondering if that's what you do. Or do you use your nails to get better control of where exactly you are clicking in and around the text box? My nails are short right now, so I am kind of resigned to zooming in and out each time.

Anyway T9 input is just fine on this phone. It works well. I got my address in there just fine.

So I see my specials. The default zoom is too small to read. Double tap zoom later and I now need to scroll about a page width to read everything. So let's try landscape.

Oh oh, there is a huge menu on the side and a big bar on top. So now I need to go to full screen or use a custom zoom. Let's try full screen. Menu -> full screen - easy enough.

Oh no, the text just got bigger, so I have to deal with that zoom bar again. Let's try it. Exit full screen -> zoom -> from 200% to 150%. Let's hope I shrunk it enough. The side bar kind of hides part of the page. So now again menu -> full screen. Not bad I can see everything. Glad 150% was the right zoom otherwise I'd have to exit full screen, go into the menu and try again.

Anyway it was a lot of work so far. I will just order using the computer.

I must admit that double tap zoom is responding pretty consistently now and the browser is pretty fast now on Wi-Fi - rendering is very fast. It just requires a lot of input to do simple things.

I can see how someone with a lot of patience can be very happy with it now. It's good for finding a page and reading it, but if you need to navigate lot, it isn't so much fun. But no phone browser is really fun to navigate. I will say some are better than others. Just have watch out that you don't scroll too fast or you might accidentally zoom. :D

But I can see how one could get used to this browser now.
