*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia N97

:( Maybe it's nokia's manufacturing process? As good as "built by hand" sounds it doesn't sound like they put a lot of care into putting them together or the design is flawed and just barely works. And really, uneven backlighting still?

Someone needs to open their up and see exactly how the keyboard is attached to the device, how it's held and why people don't seem to like it.

If the keyboard sucks there goes the main selling point. There's always something wrong..

ok well now when I go to preorder again I get NO discounts at all, just the crappy bluetooth headset, wtf. Its like the sale already ended right before my eyes. It was there and now its not.

I appreciate the responses, Gorgonesh and Blaxx. For some odd reason, my interest in the N97 is reignited. Maybe because it's on-the-street date is within arm's reach now. I don't know.

I know some people here who experienced the N97 were worried about the keyboard. Can they tell me if the keypad's keys are individual buttons such as regular laptop keyboard (or compare it to E90 keypad), or is it they bubble style keypad such as the gas pump keypad where you have to type in your zip when you pay in the U.S.?

If it is the second type, I know that it would be hard to press and get feedback.

Thanks.

Also, why the heck do they keep on harping about Symbian being dated? Those stupid ****s have no clue. They mean the UI is similar to the S60 we've always had and that's big difference from saying that Symbian is outdated.

Symbian is the only mobile OS to support demand paging as far as I know and that is just one of the technical advantages it has over other OSes. The OS has been fine tuned and improved that years in a way that is perfect for mobile devices. I know Linux has more potential and all but see how difficult of a time even Google is having getting linux to run on a phone with all the needs of a phone OS?

Symbian has come to the point where the entire phone stack and the application stack can run one processor and do so reliably. This is one thing all S60 phones have had from day one, of course they needed dual processor before to that but not anymore. If an application crashes or stalls, you can always hit menu and go to the home screen and place a call. If an application crashes while on the phone, your phone call will not ever be affected. Sure, rarely the entire battery needs to be taken out but that is an issue of negligence (see N78) rather than a weakness of a the OS itself (see E-series).

It's pretty clear that Engadget is a place full of morons who really don't know anything. Symbian is the best OS that runs on a phone and it has a track record that nothing else on the planet has. ****ing morons on Engadget are clueless.

Now Nokia's selective implementation of the OS is another thing. Some phones have it to the point where it works with rock solid speed and stability and others have it implemented like the OS seems like a straight up turd.

Also having played with the 5800 prototype at the Nokia store I can say the screen needs more of a punch than a tap. I'm waiting on hearing 5800 user reports before deciding whether that's how they make the prototypes or if it is a genuine issue.

Just looking at what Asus has announced with various form factors housing an Atom, I can't imagine Nokia improving on anything that will be out in 2011.

These people should work on getting their phones caught up first.

97th page? Dude, change your HoFo settings to allow more than 15 posts on a page. You're actually the first post on the 49th page LOL.

I was briefly considering the white model believe it or not but I'm gonna have to roll with the black one

And for the last time Isaac, Is it JUNE yet?

multitask better than the N97, there is no multitasking in iPhone 3gS, I saw the conference live and if their was, they would have showed off like they showed off camera with AF and people went crazy.

I was listening to the Autoblog podcast this morning and navigated in the browser to download an mp3 on zshare. Worked great, much better than it did on my E71 (the browser is leaps and bounds better than any other S60 phone in the past). The only thing I didn't like is that the browser is defaulted to Open while Downloading.

No guy. You are picking the wrong target if you are trying to find a reason why this thread is so large. Some people are using this thread as a chatroom. I am not the right guy to target. You are picking the wrong guy and the wrong subject. Everything I say here is about the N97 and its issues.

Pretty much the standard price for an n97 is 599 right now on the web. Do any of you know of any upcoming deals or discounts for this phone? I would like to pick one up but im worried the moment i do it will go on sale. Would you guys suggest picking one up from costco and if the price drops within 90 days i could always return the phone. What do you think?

Interesting to say at the least. But why must we wait for NAM 3g?! Just slap the fourth band on there already.. It seems expensive though.. Though if they want to be competitive with apple and the rest, the price shouldnt be huge
