*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia N97

The N97 will probably be in stock sometime between the middle and the end of July. I don't care waiting because I got mine at the $454 ultra discount price during the Nokia website glitch. Even if I get it in August that's okay with me too.

Right. And I won't not care if Nokia has the bleeding edge if it's Samsung or Sony Ericsson that is offering the feature combination I want despite not being as advanced as the latest Nokia hardware.

Or it may go like N95 and N96 in which there would be an unacceptable compromise/feature deficiency that won't justify me buying something I'm going to be resentful of and grumbling about.

Umm... all demanding consumers?

Years ago my V3xx was a fantastic phone for the time, but Cingular's crippling of it rendered it subpar for some of what I wanted to do. Since my choices are to either choose from a limited set of cheaper-but-broken phones, or pay more for a nearly perfect phone/computer/PDA that isn't crippled, I don't look at subsidized phones at all.

If I found a phone I wanted and AT&T happened to have it subsidized, I would look into the cripple-level before buying. For the iPhone, for example, that's probably not too bad. But saving $200 over a mandatory two-year contract, vs. getting the right phone and not needing to keep it two years (I expect to get an N97 about 16 months after my N95-4)...

  • That's less than $0.50 per day saved by subsidizing
  • But I'm locked into keeping the phone longer
  • And it doesn't do what I need it to do.
How is that a bargain?

No it was specifically the speed of the interface. I believe they have a note in commericals saying something to the effect of actual usage speed may vary now.

At least they mention it instead of putting all sorts of videos with crazy things that the device wouldnt ever be able to come close to.

A very dramatic but extremely poor comparison. He's not standing outside a Nokia Flagship Store telling people to buy the Omnia HD, he's just voicing his opinion on a message board, which was specifically created so people can - guess what? - voice their opinions!

You mean the speed of the iPhone because it doesn't load as much content as S60? You didn't fall for Jobs' presentation where he compared the download speed of the iPhone 3G to the N95 seemingly neglecting the flash content?

I thought their complaints were pretty lame in general.

1. The screen suffers from glare?! All mobile phones do, and Engadget even said this. The N97 may be "particular attractor". What does "might be" mean? They had one in their hands, tested it, and don't say that it definitely is or is not a "glare attractor". Just that it might be. Either I'm reading this wrong or their complaint is based on a guess. A maybe. This point seems a bit wishy-washy to me.
2. They don't like the resistive touch screen technology, and that's a subjective judgement. I understand if they don't like it, no problem. I'll give them that point. I'm not a fan of the touch screen on the Blackberry Storm, so if the N97 screen utilizes the same hepatic feedback system I may not like it either.
3. They didn't like the "barely pocketable" size either. Hey, I'm a fan of the E90 so the N97's size isn't going to scare me! I welcome the size because it means a big, beautiful and customizable screen.
4. What really kills me about their review is that they think S60 is "dated". Hell, that's a major selling point of the N97 for me! Put Windows Mobile on it and I'm out.
5. They also seemed to think the OS was sluggish. They did say that it was a pre-release unit, basically beta software, blah blah blah, but that Nokia has a history of sluggish software not being rectified by final release. I find S60 in the new generation of Nokias to be very good, somewhere between WM (God-awful) and Blackberry (?ber-responsive) for snappiness?. What little lag I find on my N95-4 is totally within acceptable limits for any phone. Now, my old E61i was a tragedy as far as lag in the OS. But the newer Nokias have much better processors and the newer firmware versions seem more streamlined.

I already pre-ordered the N97. The reasons:

a) $513 shipped overnight
b) I use my phone mostly (other than phone calls) for emails, pictures, videos (recording and playing), a few games, some internet browsing, PIM and some spreadsheet functions.
c) I currently use the N95-4 and it is almost perfect for me (I miss a qwerty though). If the N97 can perform similarly and gives me qwerty and a bigger screen, it should be fine for me.

For this usage and mainly the price, I believe the N97 is well equipped. Would I have pre-ordered if I hadn't found that glitch? Nope. Then I'd have waited for a few weeks after it was released and read some reviews.

Anyone can find a glitch in my reasoning? Anyone else care to state which phone and why you'll be buying it (with usage examples)?

I sent them an email and this was their response:

"The Nokia N97 is estimated to start shipping in July 2009. However, I am not able to provide a specific date at this time.
Please keep monitoring our website www.nokiausa.com/phones in the event that the device will ship sooner than July."

okay so it seems like all people care about is mhz. then you can get a tablet pc throw on skype and then you cant complain, tell ur friends that you have the bestest phone in the world!!

i have a x200t and use skype...i think it wouldnt look right if i hold it up to my head to make a call! hahahaha i just had to make fun of the battle over mhz!

all i care about if the phone just works, i actually think the 5800 is pritty snappy, so iam assuming the n97 will be just as snappy or more!

comment about s60 being clunky, you havent used a windows smart phone yet have you?

with all that said, ill have to wait for reviews and comparisons (with the i8910) to come out to decide if i should upgrade my 5800!

is it july yet?

Does the Nokia client have the ability to upload videos ? I recall reading that it is a microsoft exclusive (the ability to upload videos).

Yes, you can view events. And the BB has the ability to import contacts (appoints/messages - it can sync the device and your fb account ) while in Windows Mobile, you can call fb contacts or SMS.

I am not sure about online backup (Ovi) but if you are importing contacts from fb into the device, how is this any different for people using Exchange (to sync their messages/contacts/calendar/tasks)?

At the end of the day, these applications are very similar - and all have a few distinct features (iPhone chat, etc ).

I just found it amusing that you are ready to proclaim that the Nokia application is already "BY FAR" the most powerful, when you only have the Nokia microsite and a few seconds of video to go by.

After watching that video i'm curious to see if there is indeed onscreen qwerty. I know it's been discussed numerous times and stated no onscreen qwerty. Has anyone seen a video where typing in t9 in landscape, and someone actually hit the keyboard button(the one that looks like a keyboard) to show all availble input methods? if so, what was available? I know on the 5800 there is handwriting, mini qwerty, full screen qwerty, and t9.
