*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia N86 8MP

i like the idea of the n97, but i absolutely hated nokias touch interface. it made me try android (which i love!). i bought the n86 to be used on trips or weekends and i plan on using my htc magic during the week. so far i am enjoying the n86 as an everyday device, so who knows maybe my plans will change

This has both. No separation needed :D

I have not even seen a 5800 in person, it doesn't interest me at all but I definitely will give the N86 8MP a whirl. I might buy it to go along with my N97. What recession?

Guys, I think my unit's camera may be faulty as you can see the pictures I took from google looks a lot better.

@ wirelessgal, check this review of my w995, I sold W995 to get N86, but unfortunate, looking at N86's pictures taken by my phone, I'm convinced camera is faulty or image processing algorithm is messed up.I can't compare pictures with any other user, except online samples which I uploaded above.

Waiting for the NAM..

I've learned my lesson on the N85-1 that I bought from Rose on eBay..

If you don't get the full 1900/850 3G you will get a lot of drop calls..

This is from my experience..

there is no reason to uncheck this, It does not confuse the gps. It helps the gps app zone in on your location quicker.

try the supl.google.com server. It has sped my gps lock up significantly.

grr bummer on the e-mail hope its not expensive, I know I will end up giving in as well.

Thanks for the date thing, I notice it is backlit permanently, im guessing this is an OLED advantage, only powering pixels being used, so no battery drain very cool!

Also I notice if you hold down the centre button when locked it pops up with a larger date and time.

Its 399 online at Nokia USA right now, so it might soon be available somewhere else under 300? I might pick it up in a couple of weeks or should I wait for N97 Mini? I have gotten used to touch screen using my 5800 for 60 months and it might be hard to get used to a smaller screen and no touch?

I think you are missing the point of those people that are complaining about the fact that there is no Xenon flash on the new Nokia "imaging" flagship. Nokia started this whole thing by giving its phones unique features that set them apart. I dont expect every Nokia phone to have a xenon flash. Just the one that they say is their imaging flagship. The N82 had a xenon flash and was/is considered one of the best camera phones on the market. Nokia left out 3G on this phone and made people decide if the xenon was worth the price of 3G. Now, what is believed to be the successor to the N82 is announced (n86), they have dropped the xenon. I can only hope that the 3rd generation LED means something good, but I doubt it. It has been shown over and over again that the xenon flash greatly increases the quality of most pictures taken with the n82. There is no way an LED flash will give the same quality. (Just try to take a picture in a completely dark room.)

Also remember that most people, myself included, like the N82 and xenon for quick, and unexpected family photos. I have two boys in boy scouts. I could drag along my Nikon D60 slr to all the activies, but when there is a risk of breaking a $500 camera, or getting it stolen, because I have to leave it in a tent unattended, it has to stay home. This is where the N82, and xenon comes in. No LED flash can take acceptable pictures around a campfire at night. I also have used my N82 on fishing trips to canada. If it rains, I can stick the phone inside my waterproof jacket. (Cant do that with an slr)
I am hugely disappointed with the lack of xenon on this new phone, I can only hope that Nokia has another phone planned with xenon. If they completely abandon the xenon flash, I will hang on to my N82 until I can find an upgrade, no matter what brand it is.

Also, I believe that the N series has had a mechanical shutter since the N73. So this is not new.
And Nokia, is following the megapixel race, there new phones have incrementally stepped up in MP's each year. Do we really need an 8 or 12mp phone? Nope. Make the best 5mp and 99.9% of consumers will be happy

I find it very hard to believe that Nokia, the leader in wireless phones, can produce a phone as thin as the E71, or a phone that has the battery life like the projected E55, and many phones with big, beautiful screens.
But when it comes to the N86 people claim that its the the capacitor is too large to fit into a phone anymore, and that xenon takes up too much battery, causing Nokia to dim the screen.
This is what I expect Nokia to produce, you are the leader. If I am going to plop down my hard earned cash for a cutting edge device, Make It Cutting Edge. Not a downgrade from what I already paid you for.

I guess I'm still not seeing the big difference between this and say an n85. Obviously the camera is 8mp but other than that, why would I want to drop and assuming large amount of cash on this?

these are ugly phones. I am dissapointed, I though it had a touchscreen or something. Wish Nokia would create something more like the Omnia HD with a 8MP camera.

I never said that iPhone does not have geo tagging :) I just replied to the guy who asked what n86 has to offer 2-3 pages ago.Of course, Apple products have great design.I wonder what's gonna be an Apple gaming console with a price of 650$ ;) Dual slider is good for hard core gamers.

As of now I've sold all of my amazing phones and using Nokia 1100 as a backup, it has amazing battery life and a strong flash light

Mobile Review? Read any of their reviews lately? They have bias written on their foreheads! That Eldar guy is so full of himself it is not even funny anymore. Anything that is not Nokia is always looked at from a less than positive field. Watching him eat his words over the N85 made my day. Needless to say, they've been deleted from my bookmarks.

AAS comes across as bias at times but I still have them bookmarked. None of the people there come close to ever being cocky in their opinions :)

I wondered about this, but never did the leg work to confirm. thanks for following up.

The only good thing is I think we are past the point of Nokia releasing phones for US without 3G. Unfortunately the n95 and N82 models came along at the wrong time. 3G was just getting up to speed and manufacturers were still implementing this feature.

Its too bad Nokia didnt release N82 NAM, it could have come out 6-8 months after the first one. They did the same thing with the N95.

You can get v21 via ota. It's a very small update, like 700k. I'm sure it just overwrites whatever files that were updated. Compared to the full firmware from suite where it's the whole thing. In the end it's the same.

Definitely worth it as gps locks super fast, flash is fixed in the browser, and the phone just feels quicker going through menus and stuff.

I have been eyeing the n900 a lot lately, but the n86 is just too damn good to give up.
