*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia N86 8MP

It's very simple. I was happy with the E66 and hoped that it would be responsive with e-mail and data on the device. That turned out not be the case.

I didn't really complain about the lack of FW v200 for NAM models because even the shipping FW is good.

However when they updated MFE to 2.9, it is clear that most people have no problems with it. But it seems that only E66-2 owners have problems with it. I suspect strongly that it is because we are running older FW.

That having been said, it would have been basic courtesy to first test the device on FW 110 because some of us don't have v200.

Then having found a problem to simply warn E66-2 users to stay with MFE 2.7 and then OFFER 2.7 for download (which they do not). I would have been okay with that because I don't need the new features of 2.9.

Putting 2.9 on the phone ruined my attempts to get my e-mail on time and to respond to an important client. There are several E66 models without the latest FW in the field. So the responsible thing to do is to inform us not to upgrade. That's all. I don't need the latest FW or SW. Just something that works.

What I don't need is my setup failing to work when I need it. It's that simple.

My complaint is more about a lack of testing and a lack of informing people not to upgrade and then an inability to get the older MFE 2.7 version.

It simply reeks of callousness.

So basically I'm not asking for much. I'm not even asking for latest FW because clearly even though they made it available to Latin American customers they did not to US customers. They are not capable of making sure all their variants get updates. Fine. One failure there. But to then unleash software that wasn't tested with the older FW is another failure.

This company just doesn't give a ****. Plain and simple.

So yeah, while I liked the E66 and pronounced it a winner too early, it is clearly time to check out other options. In that regard I have asked people who use an E71/E66 what devices they like outside Nokia. It won't be long before I completely switch and not buy anything Nokia again. Until then if I don't write about this, people won't know that it happens. Also, Nokia themselves obviously haven't tested the software so this is feedback to those dumb *****es. So now they might know that they ****ed up.

So it's not about support per se as it is about not screwing up what was working. I wasn't informed that the software was beta or untested on all variants. If they don't want these problems maybe they could make sure all variants are up to date. How they choose to handle it is their problem. I'm open to all solutions. Even keeping the older FW/SW.

But basically it is over and no I will not be buying an N86 in a world with the OnmiaHD. The N97? I mean come on. Such wasted potential. I will write to inform them and whoever cares to read about my thoughts on that. If you don't want to read it you are welcome not to read it.

There's a reason why I asked someone about the Fuze today and that's because I was on the AT&T site last night about to order it. But he told me to wait for the Touch Pro 2 or Touch Diamond 2.

Until then, I will be using my E66-2. And until then if there are problems I will ***** and whine and moan all day about it. You don't have to read it. But it will serve as reference to those who are considering this phone. If the potential buyer does not use MFE, then they may go ahead. If exchange support is a big thing they may buy it and AT LEAST KNOW TO USE 2.7. Or to consider the E71.

Since none of these issues affect you and I don't tell you what to do, I would appreciate you not telling me what to do. If you have any insights of your own good or bad, I don't tell you not to post them.

But alas as a long time S60 owner and user, I cannot recommend S60 for some uses and for others it's still not bad at all. For business, the E-series has made strides, but beyond the initial hopes for the phone, a long term use of the phone shows that as snappy as it is on day one and as exciting as that may be, the party doesn't last for long if you intend to have it sync 30 days of e-mail or keep a few SMSes on the phone.

If others have different experiences I don't tell them to shut up. Rather I would like to know what they do to keep their phones running in pristine condition. But nobody has stepped up to tell of their experiences.

So if you have any insights please post them. If you are going to post to tell me not to post, then don't.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. Actually I'm on T-Mobile. I see three access points in destinations. T-zones, T-Mobile Internet, and MMS. It's a bit weird to me that the GPS suggests MMS as a possible server connection. Does that make any sense? Anyway, I assume I don't need T-zones or T-Mobile internet for any regular phone functionality (and I'm really still confused about what T-zones is and what's the difference from T-Mobile Internet). But MMS must be necessary for, well, MMS. If I disable T-zones, T-Mobile Internet and MMS, will this effect any functionality other than MMS and accessing the internet? Thanks.

Also, when I'm on wifi, does that help the GPS at all? Can it access the supl.google.com server that way? Or is that not useful?

I'm not debating whether the N86 needs software tweaking. That seems to be true. But you claimed that your N97 takes better photos. Online reviews that do actually compare photos from each phone of the same shot do not confirm this. All About Symbian found the N97 to be much worse and demonstrated this with comparison shots. Your assertion that the N97 is better is not meaningful without comparison shots of the same shot. Nor does posting completely different shots from the N86 taken in completely different lighting condtions.

Also, as I pointed out above, All About Symbian, despite the problems with the N86 software, found the N86 to be better than even the N82 in most circumstances, so I don't think people should overstate the software issue, however real it may be.

The only thing I don't love about the Opera 5 beta is the lack of RSS feed support, so I switched back to the older version of Opera Mini. I really wish there was RSS feed support, because the lack of it is a deal breaker.

You're making some entertaining logical leaps here :p

Dual LED is not "great", at least compared to Xenon flash for taking still night shots.

On a standalone digital camera, of course you're going to have true Xenon flash. For the purpose of illuminating a dark scene and freezing a moment in time for a photo, Dual LED doesn't come close.

However, there are costs to putting Xenon on a phone. I doubt the actual part price difference between Xenon and LED is substantive, but Xenon does put greater strain on the battery and moreover takes up considerably more physical space. Even for a less-than-slim phone like the N86, squeezing the Xenon's bulky capacitor into the design might have pushed the phone over the edge from "pocketable" to "chunky"

If I was paying $599 for a camera, I would definitely want it to take the best pictures possible (for the pricerange, anyway) and have true Xenon flash. But the N86 is not a camera. It's a phone with camera, media, and a ton of other functions attached.

For a convergence device, the N86 gets almost everything right, and for once the places where it misses the mark aren't terrible. I would be delighted if the N86 had Xenon, but its absence isn't going to make the camera "worthless", and it isn't going to stop me from buying the phone (once it comes down to the $400-$500 range ;))

Don't compare N86 with N85, compare it with Innov8 which is still 450$ to 500$ after so many months.

N85 was not a flagship device, Nokia stormed it in the market and it's made of cheap materials, wobbly slider, camera lens shrunk, hence the price and initial pre order+launch prices were not high, check out the pre order prices of N86, n86 is NOT N85, it's Nokia's most power full imaging phone, remember N82? I paid 500$ for n82 US version with taxes when it came out and after two years the price is 270$-300$ range, technically it should be 150$ by now right, as I said earlier, at some point the prices halt, until the unit is discontinued.Supposedly, if n86 becomes 300$ on eBay then n85 should be 100$? I paid 450$ does not mean that it's MSRP.I used coupons, plus shipping was free and no taxes and overseas warranty.eBay prices are cheap because of fierce competition, no proper warranty, no proper return policy etc, most sellers sell used as new or open box.

Check out the prices of N73, e55, n82 and n95-4 which was only incrementally changed from original N95! price drop depends on a lot of factors, if n86i is out there being cooked, then it will drop or too many complaints with the phone, but not as low as 300$ in 3 months and I'm the guy who paid 450$.It will certainly drop to 300$, but it will take more than a year given that the phone is not even released everywhere.Sometimes the prices go up too if phone becomes out of stock and tough to get hands on.

It does not take better pics? May I ask with which phone you are comparing? I've used Innov8 and some pics turn out be better than Innov8 and some did not. All I can tell you is that it's Nokia's best imaging phone so far with wide angle lens. I'll put a review soon, I have not gotten a chance to get around it.Anyways, I really do hope that it drops to 300$ in 3 months, I don't seem to recall one phone which was 580$ MSRP at lunch and became 270$ MSRP in 3 months.

-FM transmitter
-screen is of much better quality than the N96, hands down. Its smaller though.
-Nokia Messaging is integrated
-faster operation
-no "out of memory" issues
-heavier, more solid feel

I thought the N86 was a decent phone, but I had to get rid of it due to a wobbly slider and an overall sense of being let down by the lack of the v20 FW update (which improves the phone, A LOT).

Though the pixon looks like a nice cameraphone it is not available state side unfortunately and its a touch screen, none smart phone. I am also inclined to believe that once Nokia gets the firmware up and running, the advantages displayed now for the pixon will disappear. Its pretty obvious Nokia has better hardware in there camera sensor aside from the megapixals, its just hampered by Nokias usual crappy programing to start.

It's the sleep mode clock when the phone is closed and the screen shuts off. I think all the Nseries devices has this feature. It shows missed events without having to press the phone all the time.

The last two weeks ever since updating to V21 I'm getting low memory warnings. But at this point I don't know what to delete from C drive. I even deleted google maps (i have the free ovi maps) but still get the warning. Any ideas what to do? Delete cache from Opera and/or built in web? I have very little programs on the phone - OVI maps, Opera, Mobile Weather, Profimail and Joikuspot. That's it.
