*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia N86 8MP

Apparently, some people are disappointed with the N86 and I don't wanna deal with any of them flaming me because of that. I like the design of the N86 and have no issues with it sans the screen size. I agree that a zenon flash would have been a better design choice and would have made more sense considering Nokia is touting this as their flagship 2009 imaging device IMHO. Still, we'll have to see how the dual LED performs before any final conclusions are drawn. I think this is the true successor to the N95 from a hardware standpoint. The N96 is more of a trade-off while the N85 had too many build quality issues.

Hey guys I noticed why the camera button is hard to press, there is pretty much almost no room for it in the phone. If you take your battery out and then press the camera shutter button you can see its just like a hanging button, so this must be the reason they used a different shutter design to the N82.

Yeah, I would make that sacrifice, since I am already carrying the n82 around. A little bump out wouldnt bother me. In fact if the SE phone is better than my n82. I will be making that sacrifice.

I too sent two back due to the blurred images and slider play. Too bad, I ordered another SE K850i, man, Xenon is great. NO blurred images.

I was under the impression that other than older apps which aren't compatible anymore, the # key replaces the pencil now?

Honestly though, who really used the media key?

Thanks for the update Rafe. Car pictures are very interesting. I find it odd that the n86 captured a good picture in low light with no flash, yet the updated led flash seems to have negatively effected the car picture.

While it did light the chair and fence behind the car. The N82 still captured much more detail.

I guess the ultimate question is: If this car was a picture of a family member or a priceless possession which of the two shots would you rather have.

I know which one I would want.

more than 320x240 resolution on a 2.6 inch screen is pointless. and who cares about xenon flash in a camera phone. Nobody even uses camera phones for important events. Bring a p&s if pictures are important. a $100 cam will give you pictures 10 times better than any camera phone.

The buy.com deal through ebay with Bing 8% cashback would put this at $426 with free shipping and no sales tax. I think that is the best price I have found right now.
I still think I will wait a month to see where this levels out. It think it will find a home in the $350 range, with some coupon/specials at the $299 price point. I am still on the fence between the N86 and the N97. I want to see if this magical fw update for the n97 is really going to be all that great.

Mine has shipped from Amazon, should have it tomorrow. Will be sure to report back as to whether or not its truly an international version of what....

I guess you would have to downgrade to v11. Hack it. Then, upgrade to v20 with hack retained. If you do a format or hard reset, then the hack goes away. This is my first S60 phone, and I just want a confirmation from someone who?s tried it successfully before I attempt it.

If you're talking about the power saver date mode, then no that hasn't ever happened to me. I stopped using it as I think the battery lasts longer that way.

Is the market for the N86 really owners of the N95 and N82, whom Nokia is hoping will upgrade? I had the impression, as 3G becomes more commonplace, that they think the market for smart phones is expanding and the N86 is their mid-level phone for people who've never had a smart phone before. For someone like that, the N86 will be a nice package, in which Nokia builds on previous N series phones and gets some of the things right that they messed up on the N85 (especially build quality).

I also think from a marketing perspective the question of whether or not the N86 is a replacement for the N82 is tricky (I'm not trying to restart the flash debate). It is supposed to have a better, more sensitive sensor, better wide angle lens, wider aperture settings. All this allows more light to the sensor and should make for better photos in all lighting conditions. And they bring back the mechanical shutter that was missing in the N85.

So the N86 may be the best Nokia camera phone ever, in every respect except the Xenon flash. Yes, for those people for whom the flash is the most important factor (again I'm not trying to start the debate again) the N86 will be flawed and not a replacement for the N82. But the N86 may well be a better camera in many other respects, so the comparison to the N82 may become apples and oranges. At that point, it seems like the N86 could lay claim to the flagship camera phone title, even if not in the same sense that the N82 holds it. Of course, the N82 is a pretty old phone at this point, so for anybody who doesn't already have one, for better or worse, the N86 would be the flagship camera phone. I guess I'm trying to say, until something changes with the flash technology that allows it to be fit into a smaller (slider) form factor, perhaps what it means to be the flagship Nokia camera phone will go in a different direction, that can't really be compared to the N82. (And of course, the N86 would be an upgrade to the N82 anyway, in every respect except the camera.)

Yeah, the lack of 3g sucks. But I dont see the N86 2.6" screen as being a huge upgrade from the N82. (the OLED is nice)

Unfortunately, I think I am going to be waiting for the next wave of Nokia phones to be released. I had high hopes for the N86, but I'm not completely sold. I dont think the battery life is that much better than the N82. I think the cameras are pretty even, with the N86 winning in added features and the N82 winning in the low light area.
I have never cared for slider phones, I had the N80 for awhile and hated the slider.
I loved the E71, but the camera sucked sooo bad.
The N97 is my only hope. Otherwise, I will be waiting another 6-8 months.

Its sad for Nokia, since I have $600 sitting in my Paypal account waiting to be spent on a new phone. All they have to do is offer one that doesnt have shoddy build quality, a bunch of software bugs, and an above average camera. It should also give me something more than my N82 for that kind of cash, just getting 3G is a bonus, but not worth $500.
