Nokia 5800 XM NAM(850/1900): Reviews, Issues, Tips, Tricks & Support Thread!!

after 2 weeks of use, i feel like 5800 has the beta firmware of the full cooked n97 firmware. this is just another nokia's marketing strategy to lure us into buying n97. No this is not an iphone rant or anything. 5800 is my first nokia ever and i am still optimistic about ovi store and/or other potential fw updates.

from what i have heard 5800's browser is same as safari but performance wise there is a huge difference. when i open a page which is large enough (>1mb), i get random shutdowns. why not use the highest resolution on such a huge screen to its advantage?just damn resize the text view when you zoom into a webpage. why don't the browser start with an overview first?

this is primarily a music phone but the specs and price could make 5800 a huge hit, if nokia put some effort behind this. even the defult games that come on 5800 are so unplayable like racing thunder and bounce! bounce has the worst playing mode i have seen! why can't we control the ball using the motion sensor like marble maze or RT?

there is a fb app but it is just the webpage link and not the widget like there on n97? that text is so small on fb webpage that it is impossible to read comfortably even a few words..and if you zoom than the text goes beyond the screen and you have to scroll all over, again why not resize the text??

i m still optimistic for the ovi store and hope nokia correct this annoyances or i don't think i will buy another nokia. with all their limitations, atleast, other manufacturers support their product.

so, does anyone know if we will ever get those widgets and >4 contact on home screen?

I used XP SP3... maybe I'll try SP2 next time. Any solid evidence that this has to do with it?

Yes, I also heard the disconnect and reconnect a few times right before the firmware actually started flashing, it picked up a couple new devices, the phone probably rebooted into a flashing state that caused Windows to detect some fundamental flashing devices instead of the normal phone devices. But yeah, I made sure I didn't disconnect the phone because of this, only when I got the "remove battery" message did I physically disconnect and retry, and like I said, the 1st retry seemed to have started the update again, it wasn't until I saw that "remove battery" message a 2nd time that I started having issues. Also, I have Ovi Suite installed, but it was not running at the time, only NSU was running at the time... unless Ovi Suite has some background service I don't know about.

Anyway, thanks for the comments, I hope Nokia fixes my phone without giving me any hassle about the product code. Any more ideas?... send em my way, thanks!

I believe that quickoffice has a pdf reader. It should be free to download from quickoffice as they recently announced that some nokia phones can get the readers free of charge.

:reallysad Dam Just had my phone for like 2 weeks and only been using it about 1 week and now the dam power plug wont stick in the phone. It will charge but it wont snap in. SO it can slide out. I tried a new ac power cord and same results. Anyone else have this problem? Its really annoying as it is a Brand New phone. I purchased from dell, whats there policy? Thanks in advance

Hey -Did you notice that opera mini doesnt zoom in and out (unless I missed something). On my other phones, you hit the number 5 and the screen zooms in and out. I know everyone knows about Opera, but I find that I cant get that "mini web page" look and zoom in on it. I now drag my finger around the screen to view. Is there something missing here or is this the way it is? Also -what was the scoop on nokia internet radio, it doesnt work on a 5800 ? Tom

Yes, it's turning off. I have to press the power button to get it back on. And, I have voicemails waiting for me from people who tried to call me during the time it was off. If it was the keylock you should still get calls, right?

it's always like that. that is the reason i stopped using it in mass storage in the first place. i hate when i get a text while on mass because it loads onto C:. i don't really see the use of mass storage especially since you could access files perfectly fine with pc suite mode.

Yeah, I only look for games from the store. I opened it up today and received an update. When I was browsing through it, I was like 7 or 8 pages in when it closed on me. My phone went back to the homescreen. No way was I gonna bother to keep hitting next to get back where I was. I think the pages should be numbered.

That's not correct. The "OS" does not have to be running to update, only a small flash routine need be running. You could not even update if the OS was running. The OS launches the flash utility then releases control. The flash utility completes the process then reboots the OS.

It would be very possible to completely replace the OS if Nokia cared to do so. But why replace an OS when you can sell a new phone instead? (The sad reality of profit driven marketing...)

I just don't know if I can possibly sell the 5800 after viewing movies on it... its amazing. They should call it XpressMovies not Xpressmusic...

What a great phone, unless the N97 is built like crap, its going to be insane - touchscreen of the 5800, huge screen, physical qwerty with a 5mp camera - game over.

it's there. when you first start up the app, just look on the top right of the screen. there should be a small popup that tells you the strength. keep in mind, that for this to work real well you have to be outside.

Why don't you just use the 14 day free trial of handy shell? It will answer all your questions. I installed it and it was excellent. But i removed it after a few days cause i am a minimalist and don't really need all that.

Last night i downloaded a few family guy episodes that were ipod formatted mp4. And they play perfectly on the 5800 with no need to convert and all that, so much was out there formatted for ipod, tons of movies and tv shows. So this basically rocks for the 5800.

No, the car charger doesn't come with it. Only the car mount.

The Rogers package also doesn't have the mini remote attached to the headphones. But on the upside, unlike the standard earbuds that Nokia packages which are not comfortable, Rogers has more comfortable earbuds.

The Rogers ones look like this:

While the Nokia ones look like this:

And if you have more questions about Rogers specific stuff you should ask in the Rogers forum because people in that forum have a better chance of knowing.

Today I received a video cable and stand from Palco Telecommunications Inc. Apparently some 5800 orders through dell did not include the video cable. Mine came with one, so now I have two cables.
