Nokia 5800 XM NAM(850/1900): Reviews, Issues, Tips, Tricks & Support Thread!!

No problem :buddies:

I was shocked when I saw the manual in the box, and new there had to be another one floating around out there; the included manual didn't really get into the nitty-gritty of the phone.

It ask me for a lock code when I type those number in?

also sometimes my camera and video don't seem work all time. Has anybody experience this problem?

Opera Mini keeps closing itself while I'm scrolling a page. Anyone else having this issue? It happens pretty frequently and seems to coincide with my finger reaching the top of the screen while in landscape. Pretty annoying.

I am finding that with this 5800 that I am often running out of phone memory. When I check my phone memory it is always really low. I do not save any sis files to the phone mem itself. My IMAP email is just about the only thing that is saved to the phone memory and I wipe that clean every couple of days. Here are a couple of screen shots to let you all know what I am talking about:

Scr000047-2.jpg

As you can see at the very bottom of the 2nd screen shot it says 61MB Other Files????? I am wondering what the heck those other files are. I remember on my old E61 everytime I would save a sis file to the mem card it would save a double of the same sis file on the phone memory. Maybe this is what the 5800 is doing. I wish the new phones would not have the same problems that phone had several years ago. Anyway I guess I will try to find the 61 megs of other files.

Although I meant to do a soft reset, I just did a hard reset on my 5800 XM. Since I did the firmware update (31.2), I've been getting Nokia asking me if I want to connect to the web via ATT Internet or Wifi every few minutes when I'm idle and on the web. I matched the web settings exactly the same as on my N79, where that doesn't happen, but to no avail. Let's see if the hard reset helps. I didn't have that problem on my 5800 prior to the most recent firmware update.

I really like the 5800 XM, but my N78 and N79 never gave me a problem whatsoever.

Update: So far, so good.

Okay (finally) v40 is out for 0577454 !!

So fire up NSU and get yourself some OFFICIAL Nokia supported NAM v40 firmware.
0577454: 5800 RM-428 NAM Region US Black - MR
0592207: 5800 RM-428 NAM Region US Black PR4.0 MR
0591814: 5800 RM-428 NAM Region US Sangalo Black NAVI

I just re-flashed my XM using the proper 0577454 product code and all seems well. Haven't had time for any extensive testing, but the phone is functional.

Did get a bit of a scare when the Nokia Service Controller crashed and Winblows said it had to reboot, during the update! But I just let it sit and the update finished. After the phone rebooted I let Windows reboot, and then NSU automatically ran and showed the reflash option. Even though it seemed to be working, I went ahead and let it reflash. The second pass completed without incident and the phone is fine.

Software version
V 40.2.005

Software version date
31-12-09

Custom version
40.2.005.263.04 (XM)
40.2.005.465.03 (Navi)

Custom version date
17-03-2010 (XM)
29-01-2010 (Navi)

Language set
17

Model
5800 XpressMusic

Type
RM-428

Interesting that the XM has a newer software date, but seems to have a lower version 263.04/465.03 ? Unless the custom version # is backwards, in which case the XM would be 4.263 and the Navi would be 3.465 ?

Don't know about FOTA since both my phones are now updated and I have no way to check. But it's definitely out for NSU, even though the Nokia page that tells you what's current still says v31.

ok i have tried to update the firmware on nam 0577454. Ota shows no updates and nokia software updater didnt produce anything either. I have not entered any profile settings and im not sure what im missing.

well yes its embarrasing. but i dont know if its the 5800 or the network. because the calls are always dropped with one particular friend of mine, and its always when i'm driving 80mph down the 15 freeway. So it might happen on any phone i use, there's just no way to know for sure. i havent seen any other complaints from 5800 owners on this, so i figured i'd ask. i hope its just coincidince else i'll be pissed:(

I might got some luck with you guys, could you help me here?
I have just updated by unit (N5800XM) to v.21 and after a hard reset due to missing icons and non working dialer / icons phone is asking for password to access the 8G micro sd card. I don't remember putting any password here and I have tried all my possible passwords to use but to no avail. I have tried a lot of forums out there and no one could really possibly help me. PLease HELP. My Nokia tube is of no use if I can not brake this lock code. Does any of our groups out there encounter this ? I can not format the micro sd for we have a lot of important pictures and videos there. As far as I can remember it still has 3.5 G open memory in my micro sd. Anyone know how to flash the phone to a different region with different language pack that it came with? I just got the NAM version, I need to be able to read and write Chinese on it.

try putting the firmware files in c:\Program Files\Nokia\Phoenix\Products\RM-356\

follow the instructions to use jaf, then after you check the ini and select your product code from the list, right under it the check ini, make sure cmt 308 (or something like that) is unchecked.

maybe that will help. i've never been able to do a dead usb flash with pheonix btw, it just doesn't work for me.

edit:
also, just making sure that you do in fact have an rm-356 phone? otherwise you're flashing with the wrong firmware

So today the two shortcut keys(dialpad and contacts) on the homescreen and also the green button decides not to work anymore.

I have not recently installed anything at all. I've tried taking out the battery and sim card and a soft reset to no avail. Now it looks like my only option is a hard reset. How do I do a hard reset on this phone if the buttons mentioned above doesn't work? :befuddled

Kits - I hate to do this... but I'm going to...

You simply have NOT given the symbian OS enough time. You're coming from SE which has excellent UI. Guess what, you're using a smart phone now, not a basic SE (I also went to Nokia from SE). Use other SMART phones and you'll see how good symbian is...

Then again you may very well have no use for a smartphone and just need a basic phone. I had a samsung eternity (nice touchscreen) but it felt completely locked down. My n95-4 is hacked to the hills and I love it, I can do everythign with that phone and its awesome. I never have email problems since my work is on an ms exchange server (I use mail4exchange)... and recently people on bberrys and iphones have had syncing problems. No other phone manufacturer offers the total package of nokia's phones. Sure you may have this, this, and this, but lack us 3g, or lack a 5mp camera, or lack wifi. Nokia's latest offerings generally have everything, and I want everything. You haven't given yourself enough time to get used to symbian.... You made the same post with the n85 as you are now, and its just stupid. I guarantee you will be back.

Touchscreens ESPECIALLY require a 1-2 learning curve to really start loving them. I didn't like my eternity at first, but liked it before I sold it... but yeah I didn't want an at&t locked down branded phone made for a dumb consumer. $350 phones from at&t with no contract that look better and feel better? What are they? and O.K. ... I 100% guarantee they aren't as capable. End of story.

Ovi Suite, yes. Stop using that crap and install PC Suite & NSU. Works fine. I don't know why Nokia keeps trying to get people to "upgrade" to Ovi Suite. It's not ready for prime time.

I have PC Suite running on multiple computers with various versions of Windows from XP-SP2 to Win7 and it works fine with all of them. Just ignore the prompts to "update" to Ovi Suite and all will be fine.

Yep, Opera Mini closes itself when I'm using it too. I'm annoyed as well, guess there's nothing to fix this issue. Let's keep on waitin' for a miracle...
