Media Player Discussion Thread

If you have a problem with the sound output, I don't think there's real difference between programs. Possibly the default EQ settings are not what you prefer, so play with them a bit. You can play around with different output plugins if you want (directsound vs. waveoutput).

As for the path that ripped songs end up in, well. To set that, you have to go to preferences and look at the CD Rip settings .. To be honest, it's the first place anyone should think to look and the place where it makes sense so I can't say I agree with this complaint.

The problems I quoted are not real problems with Winamp. They're only problems because you don't know the program. Still it's not hard and it honestly shouldn't take anyone more than a minute to figure out. I've never had an ipod, though. I know Winamp has support for it, but I don't know how well it works.
 
I've used all of them and Windows Media Player is the easiest and most organized one with the most features. Running a close second is iTunes...but I hate on mac's so I would never put iTunes first ;)
 
Foobar 2000, but it's an old version with a working version of Panels UI.

I'd use Winamp if you could get rip of some of the excess stuff, but otherwise it's definitely Fb2k for me. And I suspect it'll be rubbish, but I also have high hopes for the Windows version of Amarok.
 
Yeah, I looked as well after I posted this morning. I came to the same assumption that it's only customizable for Macs (so far ). And it seems like the links that do talk about skins use 3rd Party software to skin so I assuming it is just a matter of time before some uber nerd makes my week and creates a similar utility for the pc.

B-Town, I find that MM is the easiest program to tag your music with, hanRAB down. I'm incredibly OCD when it comes to tagging music, so this saves me a lot of time. That would probably be my main selling point, along with the Last.FM support, but the lack of that was more of a Zune issue than a MM one. I'd recommend you download it and just play around with it for awhile, some people obviously will swear by it and others don't see the fuss. To each his own:drummer:

Shockingly, my answer hasn't changed. No, iTunes is a memory hog. Foobar2000 is manages my media library and iPod and Billy is used for quick play.
 
I have used Songbird and Foobar, just to try them out. Never have I used Winamp. I had about 110Gb's when I made the switch from Itunes, and a LOT of files weren't tagged. Once I started tagging them, Itunes slowed down a lot... and it was slow to start with. It got to the point where I would open it and it would just freeze. When I got MM I imported my entire library at once and it was all done within five-ten minutes. No lag time. TO this day it supports 136Gb, over 1500+ albums without any lag. All of them are tagged correctly + albumart. And the tagging is a bajilliooooooon times easier too.

I've heard many accounts of it supporting easily 5000+ albums.
 
I use Winamp 5 for listening and Music Match for ripping. Does i-Tunes allow you to listen to streaming music? Well I would assume so, but like, music that you specify. Can I tune into my radio station with it? Cuz if it can I would be into that instead of my two programs.
 
Really? Lately it's been giving me all these "click to get the latest version of Winamp"

But I don't because i'm tired of updating stuff every week. I'll give it another week or so and wait for the next version. iTunes is a prick of a program, you can't even highlight a group of songs. It's eather the whole lot, one or none.
 
I think iTunes is better as a program for playing music and burning music. Napster may be better for buying music. I have no experience with their program as far as buying music.
 
Ok Winamp just isn't doing it for me. I'm less than impressed with the sound output, when i rip a cd it's hard to get the files to go into the right folder, it won't sync properly with my ipod and last fm won't scrobble my ipod because of this. Gonna stick with itunes for the moment, it's simple and works best with an ipod (waits for wtf comments), unless anyone else has got any other suggestions hmmmm??
