why is it ignorant? if you think it's a moral issue, that doesn't mean that someone else's opinion is ignorant just because it's different from yours

what about someone who just doesn't like gay people for aesthetic reasons? is it 'ignorant' for someone to not like the color red?

Very bad analogy OffTopic.com member 'IBreastfeedJohnMadden'. That's like saying the CEO of GM is totally in touch with the people in the factory.

no, but you did just say you want to forbid an entire group of people from participating fully in our society just because you think gays are icky.

which goes back to what I said earlier about it being an individual thing. personally, i really wouldn't care if a gay dude told me about his sexual conquests, because i'm not a child and I realize that my way is not the only way.

Their emotional state?

You know what would really improve their emotional state? Not getting blown up.

do you think it's reasonable for someone in a life or death scenario to instinctively choose a person most familiar to them, i.e. a close friend?

i honestly don't see the problem here. For you people who are opposed to this, if you had a homosexual guy in your workplace or your gym or whatever, and someone said "hey.....don't beat up, mistreat, or kill this guy for being different", are you saying you would have a really hard time conforming?

No, you would have a lot of pissed off soldiers instead of a couple of pissed off soldiers most of whom probably understand that a translator is important enough to make an exception for

Depends on the type of job. if I were going to get in a shooting match and could choose 1 other person to be on my team, my first reaction would be to pick a straight one

35 years ago, if you were gay, you kept your mouth shut. I'm not so sure much has changed.

It's a level of camaraderie. Part of that is skills, part of it is friendship. My close friends are straight. It just comes with the territory.

I'm not stereotyping. people have their own reasons for being comfortable or uncomfortable in different situations and around different people. I also learned that I've been mowing my yard all wrong

That's where your translations of "laws rights, liberties" are for civilians........like I said before, a soldier is governed by the laws and liberties given under the UCMJ...you want to treat a soldier like a civilian you won't have an army

case in point, we've kicked out a lot of gay translators. we've lowered our military effectiveness because of that and wasted a lot of taxpayer dollars. a coworker of mine was kicked out a few years back for being gay. not only was he one of the best operators I knew, but he had won awards for saving millions of taxpayer dollars and for his skills. we lost military effectiveness because of that.

I'm going to assume you worded the section about aesthetics poorly and didn't mean what you typed, otherwise, there's no hope to have a rational discussion.

if the fact that someone in your unit likes to smoke pole during their off hours is going to distract you during a firefight, you deserve to get your fucking head blown off.

So, you're saying that OffTopic.com poster 'BoomBoomBoy' is better qualified to speak on the implications of gays in the military than Gen. Petreaus?

You are a fucking retard.
