no, it means at a base level my reaction is what it is. Do you think I can condition myself to feel differently? I'm going to jump to conclusions and say that I think you'd say a gay person couldn't condition themselves straight.

Like why honor guards have to be within a 4" range of height?

Would you support growth hormone therapy and leg extension surgery for soldiers of a shorter stature?

then he deserves to die in combat too for being too much of an idiot to control his attraction and channel it into the appropriate place/time.

I'm not saying peoples' emotions are disallowed- I'm saying they should be understood and taken into consideration. The fact is, most people, especially men, have an aversion to homosexuality.

You forget a soldier is governed by the UCMJ and signs away parts of his constitutional rights... they can pretty much do what they will once you have joined.....you are officially "gov't issue" hehehe

would you have a problem with incrementalism? Say opening up certain jobs on a case by case basis depending on need? Or integrating certain units rather than the entire military?

because the entire training program of the military is designed to turn the soldier into a conforming entity that simply follows orders to the best of their ability. so if General Petraeus tells BoomBoomBoy he doesn't have a personal opinion about the gays, he shouldn't be allowed to have one right?

After all, personal opinions allow for messy emotional discomfort. Much easier to just make everyone conform to the personal opinions of whoever is at the top, right?

jesus christ....

i thought liberals were supposed to be the kum bah ya types who cared about feelings.

i think they exaggerate the differences definitely, and they should be revisited. I'm all for total integration though, women shouldn't be barred from combat duties imo.

i also think that, given that men have to sign up with selective service, women should have to register with them as well. equality of the sexes in all things it is physically possible to have equality in.

that's true, and a fat slob that can't even roll himself out of bed might be the next sun tzu. let them all in!

no, my gut reaction would be the person that I trusted & was closest too. I think for me camaraderie would be the most important thing.

the ignorance is only insofar as not being able to control those instincts under ordinary circumstances. I am sure nobody likes to think about it, but I believe under stressful situations those instincts will take over and if you have any inclination to distrust people with black skin, it could be a problem

in my view that doesn't make you a racist or a bigot. it makes you human and fortunately under ordinary circumstances most of us have the faculties to not let it get to us. but the military's job is to kill people and I don't think it's a good idea to mix that with social policy. in 50 years maybe it won't be an issue, but we can't flip a switch and jump forward in time. I think anything beyond an incrementalist approach is a bad idea and is playing with fire, not to mention pissing more people off than will be helped by it

Now this I could get behind, but only if it were applied equally. I'm a straight guy, but I have no interest in hearing the explicit details of the sexual encounter you had last night with a blonde bimbo that had huge cans.
