Bell TV 2010 New Channels discussion

I took a look at the A La Carte offerings last week. It would reduce my costs by about $20/month. I'd switch in a minute.

2009 has been a good year for new channels. French Teletoon Retro is so great it makes me cry. I'm hoping 2010 will be a good year, too. Euronews, anyone?

I have a 19 inch HDTV and I don't have a problem with the 720p feed that Bell feeds us, I just have a problem with the analog SDTV singal I get from my antenna. The analog SD singal is worse on my new HDTV than on my old 13 inch CRT (now relocated to the bedroom.

I agree 100% with john81 about the HD movie channel situation. To be fair, I think that Movie Central has only one HD channel (they gave up the second one for HBO, almost a waste, in my opinion) so there just ain't as many options for us in the west. There is Encore Avenue HD though, available for over a year on some systems, but not at Bell

I'd like to see Encore HD added to the lineup, just because I think it seems the right thing to do. I imagine there would be a few irate easteners upset that there is wasted bandwidth degrading general picture quality on a channel they can't even get if that happened.

But maybe this is off topic, since it's the new channel discussion, not the the dreams only come true in fairy tales discussion

My post about quality and NIMIQ6 was a "rhetorical" one...not an actual question. I have to believe that lack of space will affect the "new channel" discussions at VU.

There will be a huge difference right there. I'd assume the HD feed looks good on a 19" display, however I have a 60" display and the faults in the picture really stick out. I can take a 27" SDTV and place it beside my HDTV and notice the same faults in the picture on the SD display, so it's not the tv.

Or, phone the order in, or, order on the internet, or, use the ethernet port on the 9242/1.

Those aren't "new", they are re-brands.

I just jumped in this thread for the first time in a long time, and was glad (I think) to see that Bell's added

292 (Turner Classic Movies)
1283 (Turner Classic Movies - HD)

511 - CNN International
1578 - CNN - HD

Do I need to subscribe to the movies to see TCM? I should be able to see the CNN channels if I already have news.... can someone enlighten me? It'll be a little bit before I can get home to check it out...

All this talk of HD I would be happy if Bell added the Kelowna local CHBC in SD, even though most of programming is just Global Vancouver now, it still has local news, which where I am I can't get with an antenna(big mountain between me and transmiter). Best I can figure it's about the only local in BC Bell doesn't carry. The only BC stations out side of Vancouver/Victoria I get are CFJC Kamloops & CKPG Pr George, 200 & 600Km away respectively. I can't find it now on the CHBC web site, but as I remember it Bell has has policy of only carrying local station when they reach a certain percentage of customers in that stations viewing area, and that number was quite high 50-60%. Also its one of small market stations that CRTC has said may shut down it's transmitter when the digital conversion is complete.
But all this could be a mute point as this station is on the bubble because Global may just shut it down, if it doesn't turn a profit. Just my two-bits worth.

I think the jays channel 398 1398HD is just a temporary channel set up to show 7 games in May when Rogers Sportnet is showing the Memorial Cup on all 4 of its regional channels.

Dug around a bit and found the info on CHBC.com

"Why can't I receive CHBC when I have a satellite dish?

Although we would like to be on Starchoice and/or ExpressVU, we do not have any control over the matter. We communicate with both DTH satellite signal providers on a regular basis but until satellite penetration in our market reaches at leas 50%, or the demand for our signal is too high to ignore, CHBC will not be available on DTH satellite. For now, the only way you can watch CHBC is through cable or

I believe TCM is a free preview right now.. But I think it's going to be in the premium movies...
