4Kids Talkback: The Crossroads of Destiny - The 4Kids Discussion V10

Well, that's surprisingly good news. I was worried that they'd automatically get rid of the Yu-Gi-Oh! airings because of this lawsuit, but it's good to see that they're apparently able to continue airing them, especially the new episodes of 5D's. Hopefully, they'll be allowed to do so until this legal matter is solved.

While I can see why people would be upset with having three airings of Sonic X, it has proven to get a lot of good ratings for the block in the past, which is why they continue to rerun it on Toonzai. Personally, I don't think it's that bad since there's only an hour and a half of Sonic X, which doesn't feel like enough to call it a Sonic Block to me. Besides, 4Kids doesn't have the rights to Kirby anymore. The last time I checked, it wasn't listed as one of their shows on their website

I don't know what to make of those ratings. Cubix does what it always does. The first Sonic X is 0.5, it usually breaks even which is sad, but the next two Sonic X's get what they normally do. Yu-Gi-Oh usually gets a 1.0 but a 0.9 is nothing to cry over. Kai is down a bit, it usually gets a 1.2, but again 1.0 and 1.1's are nothing to cry over. Suprise suprise 5'DS breaks even 0.8 for both shows which, is great. This was probably because, of the preempting rate going down. Those ratings are good. But, I really had hoped all the shows on the block could get a 1.1 or above. But, baby steps first I guess. 0.8 overall for the block is good. I hope it can hit 1.1 or above soon, no doubt Cubix is holding it back. The ratings for 5'DS should be better since the preempting in some area's has stopped.

EDIT:Oh, I hadn't thought about the holiday weekend, no wonder the ratings are down.

I'm not sure if saving all of those new shows and episodes for DBZ Kai would be a good idea. That would mean that Spring and Summer would be full of reruns, which might be too long of a wait for kids. Although, reruns tend to do well on the block most of the time, but I think it's better to air new material whenever it's possible for 4Kids to do so than to wait until later.

I could see them airing Zexal in the fall, especially if the second extra ten minutes in the anniversary movie is the sneak peek at the new series. I forget if in the press-release for Tai-Chi Chasers it said that it would be available outside of Asia in the spring or fall of 2011. I wouldn't be surprised if new DBZ Kai comes back when they air new 5D's episodes. I'm not sure if they could do double airing of new episodes, but they probably could air quite a few more episodes.

That's a good point. Toonzai is suppose to be an anime block and Rocket Monkeys doesn't really fit that theme. Although, I wouldn't mind it if they just focused on action cartoons in general, but I'm not sure if Rocket Monkeys would fit that theme either. From the preview they showed years ago, it was more like a comedy series. I wouldn't be too surprise if they're trying to get someone else to license it.

I don't think that anyone was saying that 5D's will end by spring. We only have seen up to episode 92 dubbed. There are around fifty-five episodes left. Zexal would air in the fall at the very earliest if they keep double airings of 5D's.

I don't know how many episodes Rocket Monkeys has, but there's only thirty-nine episodes for Tai-Chi Chaser. Even if they aired one episode a week, it would take quite awhile for them to finish it. It's probably better for them to try some shorter series than a lot of long-running series, at least for now.

Well, it's just a random idea but...

I've been thinking about some shows that 4 Kids could try picking up for the block, since their still searching, and I've noticed something in their ratings that's sort of obvious. It seems blatant that the action shows such as Sonic X and Dragonball Z Kai are bringing in better ratings, than the more toyetic shows like the Yu-Gi-Oh franchise, even though it's still solid enough for them to probably get ratings when they dub Zexal. So I'm thinking 4 Kids should make another attempt at an action title. When looking back at Funimation and Viz, it shows that part of what's pulled them through tough times is having one solid action title that they can rely on.

I believe they should make an honest attempt at dubbing Fairy Tail. Both the anime and manga are pretty big in Japan, and it's a solid action title. The anime version is already pretty censored compared to the manga, so in addition to it not requiring a lot of editing on their part, the anime version isn;t quite a big as the manga among US fans so 4 Kids wouldn't catch nearly as much hell as with One Piece.

4Kids pretty well has to continue dubbing 5D's. They're arguing that the license termination is invalid, but if they stopped dubbing 5D's, then they would be sending a message that the termination was valid. To stop would be an admission of guilt, really.

By going along as if nothing's wrong they're avoiding saying or doing anything incriminating. I'm not aware of any precedents but I would imagine it's the usual route that companies in their situation take.

If Toonzai is supposed to be modeled on Toonami, then remember that Toonami was never meant to be just an "anime block". Toonami was always a "action animation" block, and anime just made up a significant part of that. Ideally, Toonzai will be the same thing, an "action animation" block that happens to have anime.

Thats really weird, especially for people who have never seen it. I'm not sure how accessible the show is when you start from episode 14. But still, should be interesting.

Yes, it's officially true. A rep said so on the forum, and I read an old PDF file (the link is still on 4Kids' site) that said the rights to Kirby were to expire when it was removed from the site.

The problem with playing it safe is that 4Kids is never going to grow, they are going to remain in the same pathetic state that they are in with no hope of survival, the proof is in the pudding seeing as how they've been stuck in this limbo for years and years now. Playing it safe is all fine and dandy if your company is doing great and you want to keep it that way, but when your company is falling apart then the last thing you want to do is to continue along the same road. Alfred Kahn saw this coming and he bowed out probably with the knowledge that something bad is coming down the pike, but we'll see what happens due to his departure.

I'm not saying the should spend money like a "drunkard", but they need to put together some deals for new programming, they will need a lot more than the two shows currently in the que if they hope to become viable again. Don't you get that?

Another nice showing for the ratings this week it seems. Sonic X with 1.1, 1.5, and 1.4 and Dragon Ball Z Kai with 1.2 and a surprise 1.5 boost to the second episode. Yu-Gi-Oh! with a 1.1 and 1.0 is good. 0.7 from 5'Ds brought the block down, I just don't get it why won't the audience stick? It's another nice showing for Toonzai once again, at least they manage to get 0.9 and above each week.

Agressive, I like it. That's what 4Kids needs to do, they need to totally device a new plan of action with someone at the helm who's willing to take some chances and really drive the metrics any which way they can, things like advertising, new programming and a merchandising sting would be a good start, plus behind the door decisions need to be made a little better than how Kahn handled tings. I'm really hoping that whoever get's the job that they aren't afraid to take some chances and go for the gusto, agressive can be good if handled properly.

If 4kids wants really high ratings, they should be trying for a new Sonic X series or new episodes or a special or something, don't they still have Viva Pinata? It could pass for E/I, couldn't it?

Even with its usual TV-PG ratings, I don't think that Smallville's audience is interested in Sonic X, 5D's or any of the cartoons on Toonzai either. Maybe the promos air during that show due to the time and not the rating of the show airing during that time.

As D Dubbs already mentioned, Akria Itaro did both the story and artwork for Yu-Gi-Oh! R. All of the online sources I've found credit him for it and it also says so right on the covers of the volumes I have. Naoyuki Kageyama is credited for the story and artwork for the GX manga.
