4Kids Talkback: The Crossroads of Destiny - The 4Kids Discussion V10

Well, that's really, really random. Guess they never lost the rights to it. Not that I'm complaining, as it's probably one of the better E/I shows out there.

4Kids Entertainment addresses the lawsuit filed against it by Asatsu-DK (ADK) and TV Tokyo Corporation, together the Licensors of Yu-Gi-Oh!, which also included the Licensors termination of their deal with 4Kids for the property, in its 2010 year end results issued yesterday afternoon. The Licensors' lawsuit, filed after an audit of 4Kids, alleges that 4Kids breached the contract for the Yu-Gi-Oh! series, including deals for DVD licensing in the US and various royalty issues, and owes the Licensors some $4.7 million. 4Kids says, "The purported termination letter did not comply with the 10 business day notice and cure provision in the Yu-Gi-Oh! Agreement." Furthermore, Michael Goldstein interim Chairman of the Board of 4Kids Entertainment stated: "The Company [4Kids Entertainment] believes that the claims made by ADK in its lawsuit are baseless and its attempt to terminate the agreement invalid. 4Kids will vigorously oppose the attempted termination of the Yu-Gi-Oh! agreement and the audit claims. If the matter is not settled, 4Kids will, regretfully, be seeking to recover the full measure of damages from Licensors for wrongfully terminating the Yu-Gi-Oh! Agreement and causing significant injury to the business of 4Kids."

wowwwwww

When did it start at 6AM? I remember the blocks going from 7-noon growing up.

Seriously though, kids these days don't want to get up for cartoons. Also, if you thought 4Kids was getting bad ratings (with the stations pre-empting and dumping the block earlier/weird times), they would be much lower if they ran a block like that.

I know a really good Youtube video that explains Saturday morning cartoons not being as popular, but I'm not sure if I can post a link.

Lucario, can I do that?

I agree. 5D's rarely makes it past the 0.8 mark, so I was quite happy to see that it actually went a bit higher than that. I'm surprised that Sonic X didn't perform as strongly as it normally does, but most of the airings reached the 0.8 mark. The repeats of DBZ Kai and Yu-Gi-Oh! did really well too.

I'm actually not that happy about this turn of events for a couple of reasons that I already mentioned in the thread in the anime boards, but I'll mention it here as well. Even though they have acquired the rights to the rest of 5D's, I'm worried that they'll stop dubbing 5D's to focus on Zexal in order to save money, similar to what they did with GX when they started to work on 5D's. They might be close to finishing 5D's since I'm guessing that they're around twenty or so episodes ahead of where the Toonzai airings currently are, but I'm just worried that they'll pull another GX situation with leaving the series' dub incomplete. Given the claims we have heard from TV Tokyo/NAS, as well as the amount of money they owe other companies like TPCI, it really doesn't look good for 4Kids in terms of keeping the Yu-Gi-Oh! license. While they're probably doing this to make it look like they aren't guilty by continuing to work on new episodes and to make Konami happy with promoting the newest cards, it does make me think that 4Kids is wasting what money they do have on dubbing episodes that they may not be able to air, let alone finish the whole series, depending on the outcome of this trial. I also was kind of looking forward to seeing Yu-Gi-Oh! dub that didn't have the usual voice actors that work at 4Kids. I do like many of their voice actors, but I was pretty interested in how another company would handle the voice cast for Zexal. Though, if this doesn't negatively affect 5D's, I probably won't be too upset, but I still can't help but think that 4Kids is wasting away their money by working on this show.

Well, I guess we will just have to agree to disagree then because I don't see them growing at all aside from a slight bump in ratings which will most likely not reflect on their latest financial report which will probably show more net losses (as per usual). It's been fun debating it though, I do hope to see 4Kids crawl out of the mier that they are in and gain some good financial footing, but I'm not going to count my chickens before they hatch, especially with the way that 4Kids does things. Here's hoping for a new head honcho who will make some better decisions!

WOW look at sonic and dbz

Not bad ratings at all this week aside from the really early airings of Magi-Nation, there a lot of 1.0's and above with some shows even capping at a 1.4 which is pretty excellent, these ratings are now becoming more of a trend than a surprise and I like what I'm seeing out of 4Kids as of late. I can't wait to hear the specifics of the conference call this months, hopefully they mention the ratings and what they think about them as well as their financial situation and news on any new series pick up's that may be coming our way soon.

Wow, already? Yeah, I definitely think they'll start Zexal in the fall and probably run the last of 5D's alongside it.

When did the Zexal cards start coming out in Japan? The anime series hasn't started yet, but the manga already began in December, so I would imagine there are Exceed Monsters out already.

While it does seem a bit out of the blue, I assure you it;s not just because he's abandoning ship. He's more or less been responsible for a lot the poor business decisions made by the company over the years, so I assure you that the board of executives can't be too broken about him leaving.

Also when you consider the fact that he;s getting paid to sever his ties with the company, it sounds more like the board WAS booting him out.

Besides even if 4 Kids were to continue at their current rate, I'd still give it a year or so before they'd officially bite the dust. Though hopefully the new guy will have a plan to prevent that.

On that note, I wonder how their going to go about finding a new CEO? Since they said "find" and not "appoint", I would assume it means that their not just going to give someone already on the executive board the job. Of course, I'm all for that. It'd probably be better for them to get some fresh blood in the company. Hopefully someone with a lot more respect towards the anime and manga mediums.

I'm not quite sure why 5D's ratings don't stick, but these are only a few random ideas (keep the word "random" in mind):

1. The show's protagonists are late teenagers. While the original Yu-Gi-Oh! had teens (maybe not as late), the characters didn't really seem to act like teens (Joey). 5D's characters seem a lot more strict and act very serious. Teens and serious show isn't exactly a combination for a kid to watch. This leads into #2.

2. While there are funny moments in the show, it's a mostly very serious show (not to say DM and GX were not serious, but 5D's seems to take it to another level). This might lead kids (keep in mind we're talking about the 6-12 year olds) not being as interested, since they might not understand everything.

3. I'm really not sure about this, but the ratings shot up when we saw Crow dueling. Now that Yusei's dueling, the ratings sank. Could it depend on who's dueling? (I'm doubtful, but I'm just trying to throw out some ideas)

Anyways, those are the only things I can think of at the moment, even though they're probably all wrong.

So...I'm still a bit behind in incorporating all of Toonzaki's episodes into this master list. Hopefully I'll try and get it done over the next several weeks.

Well according to this article, Yu-Gi-Oh! brings 4Kids 36% of their revenue:

Honestly, 4Kids isn't as bad off as I thought. With assets of $23.4 million and debt of $16.5 million, they're not in too awful of a position. I mean, it's definitely not preferable, but I thought their debt was larger than their assets.

In other news, LittleKuriboh teamed up with Dan Green and Greg Abbey to raise money for Japan. They're selling these two signed cards.

I think that a lot of the time people tend to overlook the successes and look too far ahead into the future. These are the ratings for the CW4Kids for last year's Thanksgiving weekend:

There is a considerable improvement this year. Rather than criticizing every time the ratings dip below 0.8, I think we should praise their success compared to previous years. As for future shows, only time will tell; to acquire new shows they need money, and these recent ratings are giving them just that.
