TMNT Talkback "Turtles Forever" (Spoilers)

I loved it. I loved every single moment of it. It's one of the most entertaining Ninja Turtles media forms to ever exist and a fitting conclusion to everything that's come before now.

I suppose some of the jabs at the 80s TMNT were a bit too cut-throat but I didn't find them to be out of character except maybe Donatello because he normally has technobabble to back-up his claims for why something works.

80s Raph breaking the 4th wall was priceless. The time when Hun asks him who he's talking to is actually my favorite moment of the movie.

To all of you who are claiming the 80s TMNT hid from the public, you're quite wrong. In the 80s cartoon they originally did hide from the public with disguises but often enough they walked the streets of NYC in broad daylight. What was out of character in this instance was they didn't think people would be freaked out by them. This was never the case in the 80s cartoon because they knew people didn't accept them but sometimes they'd walk around in broad daylight without disguises anyway.

Also crying? Nah... that's not like them. Not at all. That was stupid but forgettable.

Krang apparently DID have indegestion. I lol'd so hard at that.

Awesome tribute to the various universes and I loved the nod to Same as it Never Was (so that's where that wallpaper and the cool ninja one came from).

Mirage TMNT looked kind of... odd. I mean the style was pretty much there but it seemed squished or something. I loved how they joked about the colored masks and belt buckles especially Mike admitting that he liked the belt buckles.

Raph trying to look cool with the Mirage TMNT followed swiftly by rejection.

The pot shots at the differences had me rolling in general and even the Mirage series got poked at with a wimpy Shredder and Leonardo's monologue. It was simply fantastic.

One thing that bothered me though. The turtles sure weren't the least bit sympathetic to Hun after he got the mutagen on his arm. Both teams of turtles usually try to help mutants get back to normal when they can or at least show some dang sympathy due to their understanding of how hard it is to be a freak or in the case of the 80s TMNT because they know what Master Splinter goes through having been human once.

Also if there was any truely missed opportunity here it was not using the mutant army to have more cameos than Tokka and Razar. They made new mutants instead of homaging any number of the old ones. Quite a waste of potential there.

Honestly I don't consider the 80s TMNT disrespected here but they did go a bit far with the lampooning... but you know what? I enjoyed the lampooning. Ever moment of it. I hope it isn't long before this makes it on DVD shelves. I really wish I could have seen it in theatres but ah well.

A+

And on a final note I officially subtitle this movie Bebop and Rocksteady save the Multiverse.

Not really. I own Seasons 1-8 of the original show on DVD, so this is not a truly accurate depiction of what they're like.

The Turtles were smart in the old toon, very smart. They didn't stand around clueless as to what was happening. Old toon Don is a billion times more intelligent than 2k3 Don is. And the Turtles usually did hold their own in battle, even if sometimes the fights turned into slapstick.

That said I did like how they handled the old toon turtles in this movie, but it wasn't truly the same as it should have been. Before saying we have "nostalgia glasses," realize that some of us own the old toon on DVD, so we know what its like.

Only... why on earth would they do that when it is much more powerful now?

They always had a great deal of trouble keeping the Technodrome up to snuff throughout the series. A flying one would be a heck of a lot more useful.

Honestly I don't see how this would possibly fit into the continuity of the old cartoon without some major changes to that timeline because as stupid as OG Shredder and Krang could be they wouldn't revert the Technodrome to something weaker nor do I believe they have the technical know-how to accomplish that without at least returning to Dimnesion X and even then it's very unlikely they could revert it back. Thus why I suggest it go back to status quo with the event of fixing the multiverse. That way it could take place early in the OG series without any call-back what-so-ever throughout the remaining seasons of the series. Otherwise you'd have to find some other way to get things back to status quo post season 10 or through another circumstance that essentially makes it so Turtles Forever never occured.

OR, it has no continuity. And frankly I think it's better that way.

I totally agree with Mandi-chan; the OT Turtles did end up contributing a lot more to the plot and helped save the day.

Whoever dubbed that theme the turtle theme, I agree, that feels like if there was a new movie, this would be the main theme. Oh man, it's been playing in my head all night, it's so well put together. :)

You're not alone GregX, I use Mozilla Firefox yet when I play the movie I get caught in a vicious ad loop. I haven't been able to get the past the ad break when Ch'rell is transported from the ice belt to the Technodrome.

Anyone, advice/tips???

Saw it for the first time a yesterday, and i loved it.

I found it very fitting that, as silly as they were, it was nevertheless characters from the 87 universe who ended up saving the entire TMNT multiverse (first the 87 Turtles preventing Shredder from killing the Mirage Turtles, and then of course Rocksteady and Bebop accidentaly killing Shredder).

Im not sure if the symbolism here was intentional, but if i found this scenario fitting since in a sense, the 87 series actually DID save the TMNT franchise. Even if the Turtles originated in the pages of a grimdark Mirage comic, it was the juvenile TMNT cartoon that brought the Turtles into the mainstream, that made "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" a household name, and that, through the money it made and the appreciation for the franchise that it created among pretty much an entire generation, allowed for the creation of later TMNT cartoons, films and comics (not to mention that its STILL by FAR the most well known and beloved TMNT version). So basically, even though the Mirage comics would of course have existed even without the 87 toon, no other version would.

So yeah, the fact that the goofy 87 characters played such a vital role in saving the TMNT multiverse in the film feels to me like the movie is expressing the notion that "sure, those pizza-addicted, "COWABUNGA"-shouting goofballs and their universe is silly and lame, but the TMNT franchise sure owes a lot to them".

80s Don was smart in this. He made the dimensional portal stick with 2K3 Don's help even though that Don didn't believe it was possible.

The 80s guys also held their own in the fights pretty well. I do think people are exaggerating their perceived badness.

The only time when they didn't do much was in the classic Turtles 'verse. However they were really out of their element there. I mean going from standard light-hearted 80s cartoon to a Frank Miller parody is definitely going to shake them up a bit since it's nothing like they're used to. Even the 2K3 'verse was just a more serious version of there's (in principle anyway) but the classic one was just way out of their depth.

That's how I see it anyway.

People need to remember that the 80s turtles were often just as silly and goofy in their own toon. Not because they were stupid or badly written but because they were supposed to be silly and goofy. The 80s toon wasn't a dark reflection on death and sin in the grim city, it was a comedy.

Imagine if Darkwing Duck had guest starred on an episode of Gargoyles. Would it be disrespectful if Launchpad kept crashing Xanatos' helicopter? Would you accuse Greg Weisman of hating Darkwing because DD got comically flattened under the foot of a giant Oberon? Even though that is exactly the kind of thing that happened in every episode of Darkwing Duck.

Of course this movie is going to play the 80s turtles for laughs, their own show played them for laughs.

Exaggerated, yes, but to be fair, I remember the original cartoon being very wacky and downright stupid at times.

All in all, it was an incredible film! I even saw a glimpse of the short-lived Image Comics TMNT in the multiverse shots.

Finally got around to seeing the movie and I was not disappointed. It felt like a real tribute to the Turtles entire history. One minor gripe though; I didn't like how they kinda sissified the 80's Turtles. Sure they were goofy and everything, but they were still brave. I guess they didn't want them to completely overshadow the 2K3 Turtles. But Manchi-chan was right the 80's Turtles did end up contributing big time at the end.

Just an awesome movie.

Since I rewatched Part 3 yesterday, I don't understand why fans got so upset at the 80s Turtles crying into 2k3 Raph's arms.

I mean from that moment, its clearly done for laughs, and the 80s Turtles don't continue to sob afterwards. Just think about the situation. Throughout the movie, Raph constantly put them down, insulted them and considered them a nuisance, yet here he risked his life to save theirs which means he cared about them somewhat. Seems perfectly natural for the goofier Turtles to show their appreciation by crying into his arms.

Wrong, nothing is clearly obvious. You can't use your probably's as evidence and say my guesses are stupid. We're on an even playing field. All of those things could be fixed by saying, that events transpired during, the last couple of years that the original turtles show went off that air that fixed all of that. Channel 6 is rebuilt, Shredder and Krang return, the Technodrome goes back underground...etc. In a few years a lot of things can happen to make things feel like they used to, which would be a likely happenstance if the show were to continue. It's completely logical to think time went by and those things you noted went back to how they used to be.

But my point was rendered moot when someone pointed out, the old school turtles events happened during the first issue of the comic if we're taking Leo's narration into account. Unless time has went by for them too, and Leo is recycling narrations.

Essentially there would have to be missing pieces to fill in the holes, that answer my question. I just didn't appreciate you acting like I asked the worst question in the world. It's quite valid. But I was overthinking it in the first place. I just hope the DVD gives us more insight into the creative process.

I can't believe it.

Bebop and Rocksteady saved the universe and killed the 2k3 Shredder.

Bebop and Rocksteady are the greatest characters of all time!

As ironic as it sounds, there was an old toon episode named, "Bebop and Rocksteady conquer the universe"

:D
