There is plenty to be thankful for with this movie. I’m glad they chose to acknowledge the existence of other continuities. The actual message, however, seems to be that while many have their own cool and their own lame points, at least one is pretty much worthless. Guess which one?
I’m no longer a fan of the old series by any means; back when it was the only thing, sure, I was down with it. But yeah, the 2k3 series pretty much became the definitive one for me. Still, I can’t abide by the utter disrespect for the ‘88 series this movie has shown.
* Turtles walking in broad daylight in complete oblivious bliss? They didn’t think the people screaming away from them was any big deal?
* 88 Don going out of his way to mention his device is to be in “stick” form? …Why? For that matter, when was he ever one to brush aside facts so casually? His inventions were often out there, to be sure, but at least he had some sort of techno-babble to back it up. Here, it’s all just “It’ll work ‘cause it’ll work ‘cause it’s a stick.” Again,
why?
* And besides the occasional line of individual dialogue (like 2-3 for Leo and Mike, a smidge more for Raph and Don), the turtles were indistinguishable. I mean, in the midst of a crisis, raising their hands like grade schoolers to suggest
food? Laughing like crazy fools at the slightest quip? Throwing
trash cans at a
hulking monster Shredder?
Crying like babies in 2k3 Raph’s arms? …
WHY??
* One last, non era-related annoyance of mine: the first Technodrome battle had lasers ablazin’, and even with the turtles standing around talking for almost 10 seconds,
every single shot blew right past them. Mikey had three lasers shoot past him and he just kept right on talking. Incompetent aiming is nothing new in any show, and I can certainly understand the robots might not be so good with moving targets, but
completely stationary ones? That's just impossible to believe, even for any of these TMNT shows.
Great minds think alike.
What I DID like was the overall cohesiveness of the story and the fact that there was involvement throughout the multiverses. Both Splinters showed that the master really does know all in any universe. Slash Hun was amazingly fitting. The ultimate Shredder and the
disintegration of everything was pretty epic. That "looking through the 4th wall" bit of 88 Raph's and the others being confused was a little tiresome, but the eventual payoff was excellent. And as few and far between as they were, the moments where both turtle groups found common ground were quite touching, additionally so with the Mirage clan and especially with the final scene; never saw the parallels of those catch-phrases until now.
3 exploding ninja stars from me. Enough to topple Shred-head for this era's final go 'round? Just about.
