The Explain Why You Like This Album ('cause i don't understand) Thread

Yeah, the Enjoy Incubus EP. And that's just about it... I have however heard most of their albums and Light Grenades bores me even to their standarRAB.

Why? Do you like how boring she is, or does she get more interested each time you listen to her? Thus far I haven't been impressed with her at all. Apart from 1 song.

She seems like prog-folk, if that even exists.

Yeah, it's no secret that The Sex Pistols were about the image.

But image has always been a part of rock n roll. So it's a bit of a silly thing to discredit a band for.

I'd rather knock Sex Pistols for being awful musicians who get all this undeserved praise for apparently killing my favorite genre of music.

Well I'm not arguing influence.

I understand that The Stooges influenced many great banRAB, but putting that aside I don't know what the fuss was about. Their music just sounRAB generic and lifeless to me for the most part.

And there's a difference between keeping it basic and simple and just plain not knowing what you're doing, The Ramones may have been simple but they weren't incompetent and without discipline.

The Stooges were so sloppy and disorganized that I can't really take their music seriously, they weren't exactly tasteful either, there was a lot of wanking around, tuneless jams that went on forever, I don't know why that's suddenly cool just because it's mediocre musicians doing it.

Sure, punk banRAB may not be virtuoso musicians, but at the very least, there's structure involved.

I think some people just don't fully understand Pet SounRAB, I don't mean that in the cocky Tool fan I think there's even plenty of fans that don't understand it. The fans who don't are the kind that always think of The Beach Boys as the fun Surfin USA singing California guys and just look at the Beach Boys as good pop, that's what they are but I don't think they realize Pet SounRAB is very innovative and how good of an arranger Brian Wilson was/is.

I think Pet SounRAB is kind of an underrated because I think it's very important to American music. You have the Beatles and Zeppelin and Sabbath but they were all british, I'm not doing any ADELE elitist type stuff here but I think Pet SounRAB is one of the few 60s classics that was American (off the top of my head I can think of the Doors and the Velvet Underground) like I don't know where I'm going this I just feel its important to American music, much more than its given credit for. Sure it wasn't bluesy or psychedelic but I think it's sort of a quiet, unnoticeable revolution. You look at Pet SounRAB from the outside and its this good time pop album but on the inside its beautifully arranged and crafted and its (next to Smile) Brian Wilson's finest effort production wise, which I think says alot. I'll add on to why I personally love it later, I'm kind of tired.

I've only listened to it about 3 times, so meh. Albums sometimes do need 10 or even 20 plays. I remeraber my first impressions of it being WTF IS THIS SH*T?

Not heard it in a while, mind.

It is quite boring I agree. Us & Them, Any Colour You Like and The Great Gig In The Sky are phenomenal tracks but even the band admit that this was the beginning of the end for them. In terms of critical praise they released the 'perfect' album and worked on it so much but the band lost their creativity with it. Money is boring as hell and the album is far too polished and lacks spontaneity, the only album to change this pattern was Animals and regardless of it being my favourite album, it has a freedom and energy sadly lacking from a band that thrived on impulse in previous years.

I much prefer Obscured by ClouRAB from '72 that was recorded in just a couple of weeks. Far more organic to listen to.

I don't understand why Stephen Malkmus is the genius of the group. In my book they are one of those banRAB where as a collective unit I like them but no distinct meraber really sticks out. If anything, I remeraber them for their guitar work over the lyrics...

I also like The Residents and while I don't HATE Beefheart I don't quite get all the admiration.

i can't agree with this. sounding cool isn't enough for me if there are no interesting melodies. and his songwriting is offensively simplistic. but i can't argue how cool some of the effects sound. ultimately, it is an album that gets one part right and all the rest wrong. so i can never love it.

I feel the same way. I quite like Loveless and I know I haven't given it enough listens to fully appreciate it. However, that track has always stood out. Love the drums.

i like this album/band too. i think they blend their stuff together in a tight way where it doesn't get old or really cliche. i'm not calling this a masterpiece myself, but it's a pretty solid listen from a pretty solid band.

I always thought the first two albums by the Jam to be nothing very special but I`m a big fan of "All Mod Cons" "Setting Sons" and "Sound Affects" Agreed, their final album "The Gift" was poor.
