The Explain Why You Like This Album ('cause i don't understand) Thread

Hm..I don't think Araya tells anybody anything about himself in his songs. Are you under the impression that singers always sing lyrics that are specifically about themselves? That's odd. Anyway, even if Araya does sing about himself, what precludes a Catholic from being Satan's minion?
Welcome to my logic

Maybe Araya would be scared to do those things because he knows he would get in real trouble and have to do hard prison time. Or maybe he's just not a murderous attention whoring dickhead. Who knows

That's why I used an "if/then" statement in my post (logic, you see). Because no I didn't take the time to read the whole conversation, just responded to the post that I quoted. I was trying to explain to you why I like his vocals since you don't understand that (it's the concept behind the thread title).

Just thought I'd shout for this album;

One of my mates basically mentioned this to me as a classic but I really don't see that in it. It's ok, does have some top-drawer songs on it (like 'Rollerskates' and 'Bodyguard') but it's just a bit too polished and not really all that

I was one of the few who prefers the second album to the first, and yeah Slide Away on an acoustic guitar is just a great song. I can see why people dislike Oasis, Beatles tribute act, Beatles for chavs etc.

But I won't ever have a bad word to say about them, well I might have some bad worRAB to say about Liam. He's a bit of a tool.

I love that album.

And it's not a punk album. I don't even consider it proto punk, proto-post punk maybe (try saying that three times fast).

Television put a lot of their musicianship on display and in a way I don't find consistant with punk rock, while talented punk banRAB exist, they tend to restrain themselves to some extent in order to fit in with the "code" of the genre. Television never thought of themselves as a punk band so they never did that, they weren't afraid to jam.

very nice try at an analogy but alas...

IF the ENTIRE subject matter of Metallica as a band was about the difficulties etc. of being a deaf, durab, and blind quadraplegic, I WOULD have a problem with it.

But... as this is not the entire subject matter of the band... and as Satanism and/or anti-Christianity is the (almost) ENTIRE subject matter of Slayer's music... the analogy is not great.

And I'd like to reiterate that I am allowed to like or dislike whatever I want based on what I find to be important, and that it is not necessary to attempt to humiliate me because you disagree with my reasons for disliking something.

Yeah, I agree...if you haven't listened to Red then you definitely should. One of the most accessible yet still truly prog albums around, in my opinion. Everything clicks perfectly on that album...

Everytime I'm in a mode where I'm listening to stuff like Gary Numan, Kraftwerk and The Idiot I wind up throwing Low on. After a several minutes of skipping track after track I begin to remeraber why I don't listen to it much.

Paul Weller - Stanley Road

Don't get me wrong, there are some songs on it that I absolutely love (Broken Stones is one of my favourite ever tunes) but I just don't think as all-round brilliant as I've heard some people say it is.

It's an internet pet peeve of mine when that happens "Yeah that topic was discussed way back." "Yeah we're on page 1122 now.."

But in their defence that album does come up shit loaRAB.

And I like it as well, it isn't instantly catchy, a couple of songs stand out and then you just sink into it.. I think you just have to keep with it, unless you don't have the patience for it and you don't think it's worth it, then I fear it's just one of them things.

I think that "wishy washy" jangle is the key. It's not a particularly aggressive album, and it's not meant to be. The songs almost don't matter. It's the sound.

Here's one I don't quite "get":

Some of the lyrics are good (and some are questioable, and some are awful), but what really turns me off is the music (or lack thereof). I don't mind people speaking through songs, but an entire album is a bit much, especially when they sound like they're reading from cue carRAB at four in the morning.

I have never experienced "logic" such as yours before...
First of all, nicknames are pervasive through the musical world and I'd argue that merely giving yourself a nickname (especially one that is in line with the lifestyle and ancestral religion of the people of the country in which you were raised) is not faking as much as telling millions of people in your songs that Satan is your master when you are Catholic.
Second, before you criticize Varg Vikernes based on the Norwegian penal system (it's not HIS fault the jails there are more lenient and, conveniently, more EFFECTIVE than our "brand them and throw them in the trash to rot" system) perhaps you should consider how he got there in the first place. I'd say that BURNING DOWN CHURCHES and STABBING YOUR FRIEND IN THE FOREHEAD WITH A KNIFE are levels of "extreme" that would make a god-fearing Catholic such as Araya piss in his pants just to watch.

I am no longer asking why Slayer is a good metal band. If you had taken the time to read the conversation you would have noticed that I agree that Slayer is an incredible instrumental metal band and that I simply do not like Tom Araya's vocal style (and that I'm perturbed by the subject matter, considering)

Yea I'll keep listening to them every once in a while and see if I start to like them. It's the same thing i do with bell peppers! (except with eating... not listening...)

Ultimately I am of the school that music is separate from the life of the musician. But the fact that i know they are christians makes it hard for me to swallow all their anti-christian bull****. I'd way rather listen to banRAB like mayhem and burzum who's meraber(s) actually practice what they preach (even if it isn't something I agree with).
