*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia N97

You really think so given it took nearly 2 years to come up with the 5800? What do you think they can do in 6 months? What makes you think they can make it a real touch OS (or UI)? Haven't you seen the Nokia track record?

I think they will get it right one day, but I suspect it will take them years. That's the glacial pace at which Nokia works.

I won't lie, the newer 5800 FWs have made it a better device, but fundamentally it still sucks. The browser is still terrible. I mean why spend $800 on a phone when you know there are far better mobile browsers in the world that could cost you far less. Even without a contract those devices are cheaper than this phone.

I guess we could all hope that Nokia doesn't dare put the N-series name on a device that isn't great but we all saw the N96. A flagship no less. That's the only basis for any hope on this platform this year. Maybe in 2011 they'll figure out how to make an intelligent touchscreen interface.

But, anyway I've said my piece. I'll let those who choose to hope keep hoping. It is not my intent to trash this thread. If anything since I have no interest in this phone I shouldn't even be posting in this thread. But I did want to try to help people not hope for something that will likely not happen. Very likely not happen. Just make your expectations more realistic.

It will be a 5800 with widgets and some interface tweaks. Expect that and you may be surprised but more than likely it will be exactly that. A 5800 with a nicer design and finish, a slide out keyboard, a few tweaks here and here and widgets. I know Nokia well enough now, not to expect that the 6 month gap between the 5800 and the N97 will just be used for anything more than to get the widget platform ready for beta launch on the N97. The browser will be the same old crap. The onscreen keyboard will be the same old thing (the bigger screen will help though). The onscreen keyboards and keypads will never be as fast as the iPhone because that phone uses multitouch to get as fast as it does. I can have my second letter touched and registered before I've even released my first finger. That's what makes it so fast. The other alternative is to use it as a landscape only phone. Not a bad way to use it, but they made it really wide. So most of your webpages will be white spaces on the sides. Try reading a column of text with about 2 inches of height on your screen.

Again, make your expectations realistic. Let the 5800 and the 2 years it took them to create it be the basis for your expectations. I'm not saying you won't like it. In fact if you like the 5800 you'll like it. If anything the 5800 isn't so bad for $300.

Also, if you want to learn about the forefront of touch screen interfaces try an iPhone and/or a Palm Pre. Looks like those two are at the forefront. If however you want to pay $800 for a device that isn't even a contender but has a Nokia badge on it, the N97 is an excellent choice. I paid $800 for my N95, but that device was the best, clearly. I didn't buy it because it said "Nokia" on it. This will be an expensive name tag to buy.

They might surprise us and sell it for $450 which is about fair for what it is in today's more innovative market.

It might not be. There were issues with ZAGG shields on the 5800. I have no idea if they've fixed it or not. I'm sure somebody will have one with cut outs, it only makes sense.

I asked this before (many pages ago)... Can anyone comment on how the screen/UI/program will look like on this? I have owned 5800 and feels like everything is in 320x240 resolution. Is there any reason why they are doing this? It feels like I just bought myself a 1600x1200 screen but only use it at 1024x768.

Can anyone comment on this?

I hate scrolling!!!

Does anyone here know or have seen how the fonts/pixels on N97 look like? Is it me or does 5800 XM UI looks as if it?s in 320x240 eventhough it?s capable of displaying in 640x360? Am I crazy to think like this? Would it be the same issue as certain HTC phones that shipped with VGA but everything shows as 320x240? Isn?t this the same as buying a 1600x1200 screen but only use it at 1024x768?

I would be totally disappointed if they are doing the same thing to N97. What?s the point of slapping a 640x360 screen on a piece of sexy and we couldn?t take full advantage of it.

Any thoughts on this?

I also remember from some of the early prototype videos that the landscape virtual keyboard would stay open even when the hardware QWERTY slide was opened. Perhaps they disabled it just to keep it looking consistent for all the shows and instead of figuring out how to manage its behavior working with the slide, they just left it off. Sounds most probable.

It has its fair share of positives (apparently superior keyboard layout, windows mobile 6.5*, larger screen and resolution ) but it lacks the N97's onboard storage and the camera looks to be inferior.

*Not a positive for most of this board, but I digress.

Just placed my Samsung i8910 Omnia HD order with NCIX.com.

Came out to $660 US Dollars shipped.

Let see how good it is before before I dump it on eBay. :buddies:

Wirelessly posted (Opera/9.60 (J2ME/MIDP; Opera Mini/4.2.13337/724; U; en) Presto/2.2.0)

I'm sitting down here with my E71, putting it thru it's paces with my usual power usage and it just hit me...I really want that N97 but it's gonna be hard to put down the E71. Nokia has really put together some great devices over the past 2 years

I mean in your honest opinion do you think they have mastered this platform's ability to properly register a touch in the x and y axes? What are your honest thoughts when using the landscape QWERTY? I feel it gets the right letter about 60-70% of the time when typing at a decent speed. I tried calibrating the screen and maybe I should do it again.

Maybe my particular device is defective? I really don't know.

I feel T9 is the only input that works in this phone, and that too you can't press the buttons too fast. So no matter what you will be typing slower than than any physical T9 keypad. Leave alone E71.

Also touch is sometimes too sensitive and sometimes when you think it is sensitive it asks you to hit it harder or it doesn't respond. So many times I am left wondering if I am using it wrong or if the device is screwed up? I don't really have an answer.

Are you going with the BlackBerry or are you planning on buying a new device with a different OS?

Are you waiting a couple years to see if Nokia will be able to make any worthwhile changes the S60 OS?

The N-series is notorious for cheap materials and overall poor build quality. The tilt hinge will probably hold up better than the dual slider but I am still concerned at the fact that the cable for the screen is exposed to dirt and water when the phone is in open position. Hopefully they took precautions to make it durable.
