*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia N97

I was suppose to get my i8910 from NCIX.COM for this long weekend but those mo-fu have a messed inventory system and put me on hold. They probably don't have the phone but still charged me...

If I don't get an status update from them I'm going to cancel my order and order one from Europe.

It won't look good when someone tries to swipe downwards to go down in a menu yet gets nowhere because s60v5 sucks  unless you don't loan your phone to others.

but honestly besides what I assume will be slow page rendering, that method of scrolling going to be my biggest gripe, especially in the music player..flicking is almost second nature to me.

edit:

Yeah as much as I'd like to do this, I'm guessing 20gb of that 32gb will be filled with music..it's going to be a pain in the *** :(

Also anyone know how long it takes for the music library to refresh on recent Nokias with 16gb of music on a card?

And that would be FINE, but no one is stepping up to complain. Regardless of how much anybody sings this devices praises in opposition of the things it's missing, you're still going to get the phone. Nobody's going to take it away from you. But arguing against the idea that it should have better hardware is just silly when we're already seeing other devices that can use it, not only from Samsung, but from the same company! It gives Nokia validation for not using better hardware and only hinders their progress into better phones in the future.

I thought you were gonna hit me with the roll of quarters in your fist.

Who says its about cost? I'd rather have the tried, tested and true 5MP image sensor than an 8MP image sensor that hasn't been through the trials of the real world yet. Cramming more and more megapixels into a phone doesn't matter if the image sensor is crap. Are you listening Samsung? How about you Sony Ericsson?

I have a pocket specifically designed for my phone and nothing but my phone so no case for me. Last time I used a case was for my E62, very nice no-name belt pouch that fit it perfectly. Got it for $5 too. I would have loved to use it for my E71 but the fit isn't right.

Yeah it's pretty bad. At least on s60v3 you can manipulate it for a while and get a few seconds of reading before it goes blank and you lose control while it attempts to render everything (this, as we both know takes up to 60 seconds on some pages - so there goes the CPU argument).

But honestly on a touch device it's simply bad design.

What should happen is the app should come up blank and serve as a placeholder so the user knows the app has launched or the page loading has started. Then nothing should be displayed until the device is ready for input.

With a D-pad at least you know you provided input and hence the phone received it and if nothing happens you can safely surmise that the page is still in the process of loading. With this device the touch response being so inconsistent and basically unreliable you are never sure if the page is still loading because there is no indicator to tell you or if you are in the middle of one of S60v5 quirky moments when it is going to give you that delayed response or expect you to repeat your input. There could be portions being loaded off of the visible screen. You can't even scroll to see if that is happening because S60v5 unlike S60v3 does not go blank it just shows things as they load. But while S60v3 at least lets you know by going blank, this one keeps the web visible but disables any touch input while that is going on.

Yes there is an indicator on top but it only tells you that data has transferred and whether the 3 year old processor has completed rendering the page.

I have to tell you the end result is very inconsistent and very disconcerting. I am not picking nits for the sake of picking nits, but the default browser is best used to pick a link, put it in your pocket and then a minute later read what you want to read. This is why many 5800 fans are using Opera Mini on their phones - at least I think. My experience with Opera Mini on the device was very poor also. It literally does not register your clicks sometimes unless you try 4-5 times. I believe updated versions of Opera Mini have mostly fixed that problem but I saw a thread or post just last week talking about how Opera Mini is still not fully supported on S60v5 and they are expecting yet another update to fix issues.

I suppose the device will do well in the hands of the very patient and very understanding. I am neither, especially if I paid flagship money for it.

True, I forgot that...I thought you could buy it at $699 on a month to month plan

To be honest , I just added Omnia HD to make my list bigger...I don't consider any phone samsung makes a phone...I wouldn't own a Samsung phone if it was offered to me...
You wouldn't take the omnia hd that you consider leading edge, so what's left?
Which one suits best your needs?
More importantly, which one is more leading edge? I'm not even going to start listing the iphone and pre specs (3MP camera should be enough)....
If nokia released a high end N97 that you considered leading edge, I wouldn't even be on this forum because it would cost $1K+...
I believe that nowadays it's not all about being leading edge....It's about being powerful enough with more than decent specs for you OS and Apps to be fast and snappy...the rest is all about the OS and the Apps...

I need a new second phone badly. I think I have marrowed it down to the n97 or new iphone. First one released wins my money. Anything else coming out really new that works with att 3g?

Ok, let's go though this list and see where a 20% cpu perfomance would help. To give context 10 seconds of image work would complete in 8 seconds. Now the question is, does the omap3432 (ARM) used in the Omnia HD perform 20% faster than the ARM11 or not? It has a dsp for certain applications, maybe it would be used to do image work, dunno. Let's just say it's highly debatable.

1. Picture processing agreed, slow.

2. GIF peformance, interesting test. The cpu can decode h.264 (cpu intensive complex algorithms) at 30fps...so...yeah I think the animate gif test maybe showing a limitation on how s60/symbian handles animated gifs more than anything.

3. games, n-gage seems to run fine on my n-85. Not 3d, and it seems Nokia made an active decision to drop 3d acceleration. I suspect it was barely ever used in the n95 and was a waste of price, space and cost. The n95 is a brick of a phone, after seeing one again a few months ago I remembered why I never bought one.

#1 more ram couldn't hurt. I just checked my phone, 3 lines of programs in the task list, including gravity, audible, opera (at the NYT), gmail java client, podcasting, etc and I have 35megs of free memory. I don't think that's a limit at this time.

4 More/larger web pages. never had a problem with opera mini being fast on even the largest web pages. The nokia browser needs some help, it's javascipt engine is years out of date, it's damn slow, etc. cpu speed has nothing to do with that mess. (well unless you buy the MS philosophy, wait till the cpu/hw catches up)

5. Scanning id3 tags from the music library. No cpu work, lots of io. You read, jump, read, jump, etc. It's moving data from files on your sd card to a database on the phone. Get a faster sd card.

#6. Editing video, hmm, yes my system crawls when compositing and it's a core 2 duo. A lot to ask...but of course it's coming. :D

Are you sure ? Even after all the creaking sound and the infamous gap in upper right ? I have never been as less confident as i an with 5800 's build.

There's not enough proof that the N97 would benefit (noticeably) from better hardware.

I stated earlier in this thread, and still stand by it, the only downside to the N97 is that its not a good value, it's actually kind of a ripoff, but you buy what you want. I want S60 + qwerty + cool slider + 5MP cam + w/e else.

The price in N97 is dropping, but Nokia decided on its MSRP and it's probably going to stay at 699 (is that what it is?) If the processor and RAM were higher spec'd, then it would have MSRP'd at higher than 699.

I have done it, actually when the N95 8GB was initially launched in the US it had European 3G frequencies, i.e. N95-2. I got it but sent it back with in a week or so and never paid a restocking fee or any thing.

As far as I can remember, Amazon never had a restocking fee, may be they just started doing it but not untill last year.

I see no difference with 8GB class 4 & class 6 on my N95-3. Currently using 16GB class 2 card & I have no issues with it. So, you don't really need a class 6 card.

I don't have to get off the bike to use the phone....I can control it from a headset. If I have to take off gloves to press a AP button --FAIL. Don;t have to do that with the Nokia. But them again I can control tracks, receive Voice GPS AND take and make calls without seeing the phone all while email is pushing from all my emai accounts (using Profmail Ap)!! I can even have the phone read back my messages!! I don't use Nokia messaging...in fact I don't use Nokia Software at all except to update FW...Don't need to.
Drag and drop or sync from any Media player. Media Monkey is far more powerful than iTunes or any Nokia Music app. Especially in the tagging dept.

I don't know what sluggishness you are referring to. I have Profimail pushing fur email accounts, while Facebook Updates on the screen and Twitter is running in the BG,,,,,Shozu is waiting to upload a pic to photobucket or video to YouTube automatically....

I HAD the iphone...I used th iPhone a I liked the " fun" part of the iPhone so I bought an iTouch....but as an all in one solution and especially in the phone department I could not see paying $30 a month for data on a phone I would have to hack just to make it do some of what the Nokia N95 can do!!

I never saw a home screen updating ap like Facebook or Bloomberg on the iPhone. I always had to OPEN the app to see the updates...

Everything runs in the BG and I certainly do not feel the phone is sluggish compared to the iPhone but then again my iPhone wasn't hacked. I get through a whole day on battery as well with all the BG apps running.
I just don;t see the "issues" you are claiming. If I did I would still have the iPhone.........common sense.

As a mass storage device I could NOT plug th iphone to ANY computer and retrieve files....Maybe Im missing something there. I need itunes to do anything and God Forbid I changed something in the sync window Itunes would erase the phone and well lets say I did not want to be captive to itunes for more than a toy........The itouch is that toy and a great and fun toy it is...I love it. Podcasting is great..Wifi is nice. Its fun toi play with. But for me the more serious tool is the N97.

Whether SMS is an ATT or iPhone issue it still is NOT available if you have an iphone. That makes it an iPhone issue in my book.

I actually HAD the iPhone..I used it. I had both side by side for over a week..I made my choice based on features rather then eye candy and a slick GUI.The Nokia is not as "slick" but its a workhorse. Resistive vs Capacitive...meh...they both do what they are supposed to do. Iphone is more "elegant" but not worth an extra $240 a year

Pinch zoom...again fun...wizbang scrolling again "fun".....and I have it on the itouch. When I want to play I use the Ipod...

As far as th3 N97 being a "runner-up" I guess that depends on who you ask and what phone THEY chose? Ya think? Everyone CAN have an iPhone ya know.......ITs not like everyone WANTS one.

liknsmak i hear ya ,however, nokia already caught up with apple in terms of hardware i.e the new e55 (or e52), nokia 5630 express music both are
running g 600 MHz CPU , so that will be a blazing fast phones
