*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia N97

The Mofo is in da house! Arrived today at around 10:30 AM. In about 7 hours, I will finally be able to see for myself how much Nokia screwed up with this thing.

Can anybody here explain the Ron Jeremy reference from a couple of pages ago?

Nokias do have good reputation of taking lots of damage before actually breaking down. Thought don't think too many are using phones here like 8 years ago and actually care a bit more about these hundreads of euroes "mobile computer". Thought it might still hold true in dumb phones.

3310 and 3210 where used for hockey pucks here too :D

No. We have yet to see that there will be any benefit to the faster CPU or that N97 will be replete with out of memory issues. They did an API to contain that, presumably.

Which do you think is going to be more successful? The winner in the sales war will see more development. Xbox 360 is inferior to PS3 in just about every spec but it has long enjoyed an advantage in available games. I own both but prefer my PS3, but many multi-platformers are continually optimized for the inferior platform. Much can be synergized since they're on the same platform but where is Samsung going to be distributing it's software to? Nokia and Adobe are paying people to produce flash stuff for the Ovi store.... (similar to the way Microsoft outright purchased many exclusivities, even if they were only timed).

More memory is certainly always better. A change in CPU will need to be accounted for in the coding and optimization process. If the coders aren't up to speed on this, their code and execution will suffer. That's why the beginning of every gaming platform has games often barely distinguishable from their last generation descendent/competition, but at the tail end, they're really pushing the envelope.

From the roadmap, N97 is almost certainly Ivalo. Eitri looks like a dumbed down candybar version with 8GB or so, and most of the feature list from N97... likely more of an entertainment device.

5900 seems like the follow up to 5800 but hard to see how it'd surpass, much less equal any specification on N97.... Is Eitri the 5900?

Amazon's return policy is awesome and I want to order with them and called to make sure I can return it within 30 days. Both CSR's I spoke to said Amazon would charge 15% restocking fee minimum regardless of condition of the phone. I don't want to pay $90 to open and inspect a phone.

Has anyone returned phones to Amazon for a full refund with 30 days? If so, did you return the phone in the same condition or w/ a little wear and tear?

Thanks in advance for your super helpful responses. :)

Lol Nokia fans have accepted it as not the greatest technology, unlike Apple fans which vehemently refuse to believe anything putting the iPhone down

Wirelessly posted (Nokia N95-3: Mozilla/5.0 (SymbianOS/9.2; U; Series60/3.1 NokiaN95-3/20.2.011; Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 ) AppleWebKit/413 (KHTML, like Gecko) Safari/413)

i knew about that a week ago and for me that is one of the biggest features of n97.
As far as i know that software will be release not with the phone but months later i.e. It wont come pre installed on the phone.
Did anyone hear something similar?

It's not going to happen (selling so poorly that Nokia has to sell it below $400).

The phone has a touch screen, a massive amount of memory, a full keyboard, a 3.5 mm jack and a solid camera.

There is a big, big world outside of these HoFo walls and those people buy 95% of the phones out there.

Interesting. I wonder why the CSR I spoke to had the gall to suggest that the N97 will ship out within the next week since, as far as I know, no other comment from CSRs posted here suggested any early shipping date. So either the CSR I spoke to was unabashedly wrong, or he let something slip!

Forget you guys. I'm going to get my hopes up, and have them fulfilled. :D

What phone are you testing this with?

I just tried it with both a 5310 and an E61 on ATT. Both are on EDGE. I had google maps open on the 5310 with traffic info; it let the call through and put data on hold. On the E61 I was browsing with Opera Mini with Slick signed in, on the first attempt it did route the call to voice mail but the second call came through and the phone put data on hold.

It looks like while connected EDGE, unless you have a chunk of data transferring at the same time as the call (probably some short timeout) it will put the voice call through.
