*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia N97

No, the 'w' in 'wpm' still stands for words. :)

Normal typing speed for most people on mobiles is anywhere between 30-40 wpm. As you get faster, you get bump the numbers higher than that. A while back, I used to crank out around 60wpm on average with my N95's T9 and hit a personal record of 72wpm.

You can test your own speed at iphonetypingtest.com.

I have the dummy N97.. The keyboard does not have moving buttons - it's a single piece of plastic for the whole bottom section of the display/dummy N97.

And the material is completely different. You're better off order from a place with good return policy to try out the phone or find a local retailer that let you play with it before buying.

I think some Amazon pre-orderers are going to get their phones on Friday. Just a feeling I have since a couple Canadian cell phone retailers are stating that they are receiving orders on Friday. Don't crucify me if I'm wrong LOL

I'm supposed to correct you and say that it's "iPhone 3G S" with a space, but it's a stupid name no matter how you type it. :2thumbs:

It still has a lot of things in its corner to handle multitasking better. I've been able to crash Safari by opening several large web pages, but that won't be a problem with 256mb RAM on board. Whatever push notifications is supposed to do is certainly going to help, and if all else fails, there's the app available through Installer than does allow real multitasking.

Believe me, I'm not trying to push the iPhone because there are still plenty of things to complain about that will keep me from using it (or recommending it), but Apple made the right choice with 256mb of RAM.

Here are my thoughts:

I like the D-pad placement because if you think about it, your xbox and ps3 controllers have the d-pad fixed on the left hand side of the controller. So it makes sense why nokia placed the d-pad where they did. This makes it easier to play games or navigate through menus.

The 5mp camera. After two years it's fairly obvious nokia is starting to milk the n95's camera. I'm not complaining too much because the 5mp CZ camera is great but if they wanted to completely blow out the upcoming competition they needed to stick at least an 8mp cz lens or a greatly improved ccd in this phone.

Nokia needs to Perfectly nail down to a tee the page load times and finger point reactionary times on this phone. People by nature will compare the n97 directly to the iphone. There is no way getting around that, so nokia needs to make sure that the menu navigation and load times either match the iphone or even do better than it. I can't stress this enough, if nokia wants to really have an iphone killer on their hands they need to match the load times and finger press accuracy of the iphone.

If they don't succeed in this what will happen is that reviewers will automatically disregard the phone because it doesn't mimic the iphone experience. (disclaimer) I'm not a fan of the iphone but the menu transitions artificially make it appear that the phone is snappier than what it really is. Nokia needs to improve or match this.

end rant

Can you guys help me out? I'm still tryna decide whether I should get the black or white N97. I think the white looks better but in the long run it might not look as clean because I tend to use my phone alot. And does anyone know if the live widgets like the fb/email will work properly with the regular tmobile internet becuase I know the 3G wont work on t-mobile.

Thanks!

One last question though, the main reason I got rid of my n95-4, well besides not having a full keyboard which eventually drove me nuts with the amount of emailing I do, but the main reason was the lag. My n95 was always very laggy when pulling up texts, emails, anything really - do you think this phone will have that same lag or does it have a better processor and graphics acceleration?

The biggest thing Nokia has been showing off on the N97 has been the widgets, which aren't on S60v3 FP2. They're little things on your home screen that can show you information like weather, stocks, facebook...

Besides that there isn't anything I can think of that's all that different (there is touch but we've covered that).

I don't mind having a really heavy phone, I remember after I bought my N95 I thought to myself "Gee, I thought this thing would be a lot heavier". A lil heft makes the phone seem like it's worth something. Oh well, I'll always be able to smile when someone looks at the back of my phone and reads the etching on the camera lens "5 Megapixels?!? HOLY S$%#&$"

That's a good point I didn't consider about it being shorter. My whole thing was that if it's gonna be thinner, you better make it shorter or it will look weird LOL. I don't think N-Gage will end up on the Eseries devices. Someone mentioned it earlier but we gotta remember they are business devices. I'd love to see Nokia implement a track ball or optical joystick like the Samsung INNOV8. Preferably the latter of the two.

Wow. I woke up this morning not expecting a new phone from Nokia, I hop on engadget as I always do... I see this slide qwerty touchscreen phone off to the right and I thought to my self, that's a slick looking phone, probably from Japan. I scroll down a little, BAM it's a Nokia. I said holy **** outloud haha.

Definitely looks promising. Love the white, looks sexy. It's a little thick but the specs look great and I'm not concerned at all about the camera. Can't wait!
