*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia N86 8MP

Not that I totally disagree, but I have read that a Xenon flash can put out as much as 100 lumens. There are hi power LEDs that put out as much as 400.
this bike light that is a single LED can put out a constant 120 for 2hrs with a 4.8v nimh.

So we will have to wait and see, but I can't see how they couldn't have the 2 LEDs put out 80-100 lumens for a hundredth of a second.

Thanks for the detailed description. It is disappointing to me that Nokia for years now seems to have stopped caring about improvements to call quality. Different phones are more or less good, but Nokia basically seems to have decided the technology they have is good enough and left it at that.

I've never been impressed with Nokia especially for noise cancelling on background noise. Every candybar and slider phone from Nokia that I've tried has been mediocre at best, including the N80 and N95. So if the N86 doesn't improve on them, that seems pretty poor to me.

I have a 6290 flip phone that is much better (flips seem to do better with noise cancellation, because the gain on the mic doesn't have to be turned up as much). And in the mean time, for all their flaws and problems, Motorola does seem to have continued to try to improve noise cancellation. I just don't understand how Nokia (and to be fair most other cell phone manufacturers) think the call quality on current phones is acceptable.

But anyway, thanks again for the description of the call quality on the N86.

I don't think there is any official confirmation that it is(or not) going to be released. I don't see a reason as to why they wouldn't make the N86 in white given that fact Nokia does for other markets.

Hopefully, it will release with(or shortly thereafter) the N86 indigo.

It's an attractive phone for sure....I personally like the white myself. But Truth, $469USD? Isn't that too low for this Phone? I'm guessing it will be around $600. If you are right, I might just pick one up to replace the N96.

Being a savvy buyer, I know everything you wrote, you forgot to count taxes, I never ever buy from Nokiausa.com, as I said I paid 270$ for my N85 which is amazing price. It's with every phone, initial price is a lot, at some point the prices drop very gradually and N86 being 300$ in 3 months is outta of question, at least 15 months.I'm not counting deals, rebates etc.If you are lucky, you might get used mint condition for 350$ on eBay.As I said if you find the phone for 300-350$ this year, pm me, because I'll surely buy.

N95-4 is all time king, but N86 offers a lot more. I still use my N95-4 time to time, but now I need to use N97/N86 more often :hehehe:

I didn't mind the N97, but it just seemed too similar to my N95. I also hated the lack of a touch screen qwerty (gross oversight on Nokia's part...it's like they WANT you to use the full qwerty). Granted, the N86 is an evolutionary product compared to the N95, but the screen, speed, and camera upgrades warranted an upgrade to me.

The touch interface will greatly improve with the new update, but I still believe the N86 is the best Nokia out right now. My opinion of course.

Android is great, but I think the UI is ugly...and there isn't a 3G version available for AT&T, so that's pretty much a deal breaker for me.

Yeah, it was nice of them to send me out a replacement immediately. Every time I call (or, well, they call you), it's always been a pleasant experience. I paid a bit more for my N86 than most people by getting it from Amazon, but their service almost justifies it for me.

I should have it on Monday to try, and I'll definitely let you guys know how my next unit works out. Let me say now though that I'm just extremely picky with the unit I have now...it really isn't as awful as I may make it seem. I just wanted to make sure I didn't get a dud in terms of the slider ;)

To whomever wanted key tones, they have apparently fixed this. My phone has key tones when I dial a number so I guess it is time to turn them of in the profiles. :)

I also noted much faster and stronger gps satellites connection.. Google maps picked up 5 satellites inside my house where it before struggled to get 1 or 2 and same with Garmin. PLus the speed at which they are picked up seems faster.

Btw, I did the 3 finger salute last night because I have always done this before when I have upgraded the fw. I had some problems with a 3rd party app which now works flawlessly once installed again.

Oh I totally get that most of the features I listed have been done in one capacity or another on other devices, but none have it all (as you discussed).

All of Nokia's devices should have great build quality, but they don't; this phone seems to be coming back to the greatness that was the N80, N73, N93, N93i, etc...just a great phone that oozes quality.

I definitely understand that there isn't anything to get truly excited about since there isn't anything ground breaking here, but I guess we are just so starved of a solid device that the next best thing turns into the best thing.

I guess we can both agree that the N86 would be a 100% "must-buy" if it had a xenon :reallysad

I haven't used a FP2 phone yet or one with an OLED screen, so I don't know what I'm missing and I'll leave it at that until the E72 comes out (for FP2).
Go back to the N95 where you'll get excellent call quality. You will fall in love with it again. :)

We know the sensor on the N86 is larger and the mechanical shutter is faster. I'm just as skeptical as everyone else, but I need to see a good review or trial it myself to be sure.

regarding charge time-

I ran my to empty on the first day, it was almost two hours exactly to charge it to full using wall charger. I've been using USB to charge while I'm traveling (sitting in an airport right now...yay), and I think it does take longer.

youknowjack8 - were you charging by USB on a PC or with wall charger?

I didn't see where he said he was in canada.
Still, most of the North American continent is going to want the nam version that has the 850 3g band.
I also see no reason that if you are in canada and had a warranty issue, that you couldn't just send it to the US repair center.

lol....kind of went from his situation to mine......my bad

there are hardly any resellers that offer north american warranty...because most if not all sellers in canada ship their nokia devices from Asia and the warranty only applies there and not here. And i really dont see myself shipping a $500 - $600 phone half-way around the world, when anything can happen in between

i have also heard really bad things about Nokia US service centers

i guess nam only matters if your dead-set on using the 3G service and if you plan to resell later

Thanks for all the tips! I switched my server as directed and the location is vastly more accurate (and seems to get a fix faster, too).

Completely unrelated question: could anyone recommend a shortlist of quality (preferably) free games (java or otherwise) for this phone? Unfortunately it's the kind of thing that is very difficult to google without getting pages upon pages of warez sites :(
