*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia N86 8MP

You guys may not be excited about this phone. But when it comes out it will by far be the best phone nokia ever made and will be the standard barrier for all smart phones for some time to come!

I have minor scratches on the edge of the lens where the slider goes up and down. No scratches over the lens itself though.

The N86 is sooo close to perfect for me. V20 seems to oddly work better when I have "effects" engaged with my themes. The GPS can be finicky and work better with supl.google.com as opposed to Nokia.

It's certainly a tad laggy and I hope newer firmare will resolve this issue.

For those mac users, if you update Nokia multimedia transfer, there is a new version 1.4.2. It seems to have fixed the iPhoto import problem in a roundabout way. Your phone still does not show up as a camera, but it will ask you if you want to import your photos and videos. It opens up iphoto and imports everything and even iPhoto is smart enough not to import duplicates. very happy to have this working again! :)

Don't know if anyone else saw this, but there actually is improvement in video recording- the camera now uses the entire sensor for video recording rather than just a vga portion, so you can actually use digital zoom without as much artifacts as before.

actually the oled is even better because it only has to light individual pixels. So you can have just the few pixels lit and it does not drain any battery power. With lcd the screen is always displaying something but to see it the whole backlight has to go on draining battery power. So if you choose the date setting you have a great pocket watch that is always on.

I'm not able to play Youtube videos using the YT app. provided. It switches to "real player" and keeps saying "connecting" over and over again. Anyone else have this problem?

a lot of people actually don't care for a super large screen, a touch screen, or seeing a pic of someone in the club who looks better in the dark....

too much "Apple has this:", "Samsung has that", etc. going on...

by december the N86 will more than likely be crowned the new king of the phone world....

Have you heard anything else about v20 and the camera versus v11? I just ordered the N86 and should get it Thursday. I was figuring I'd upgrade to v20 right away. Any reasons I might want to hesitate on doing that? Thanks.

Sinta,

Can you do that same picture again, except zoom the N86 in a little to give the same size aspect as the n82. I would be curious to see how the total darkness zoomed shot is on the n86.

I am still not sure that I like the wide aspect of the N86 for every shot. I know it would be better for people that want to crop photos later. But for average shots, it seems like the subject is farther away than you really are.

Sinta's shots show this very well. Its almost like he needs to be 5 feet closer to take the same picture.

Hey, hey, hey kids - stop the yelling! All right already - settle up!

Yes - you are right, there is nothing new here. Compared to the N85, only a denser CCD sensor (i.e. more blur) and 8GB built-in flash. (I just got a 16GB class 4 ?SDHC for my N85, I think that's plenty for now). The one thing I *would* like to trade is the keypad - it seems more ergonomic on the N86.

But the point being - this is by no means their "flagship" product. The N97 is still, and will still be, the most capable phone not just from Nokia, but from anyone (Idou and OmniaHD nonwithstanding). Why get so mad simply because Nokia announces a middle-of-the-line product?

So yes, I'm still getting a N97...

I don't know if you have the same product code, but V21.6 for RM-485 is still not available for Product Code 0590552 via NSU or Navifirm.
I'm sure it will be nice to go to V21 when it is completely released.

Too bad the N900 is only TMobile 3G.

I've had the phone, so it's obviously from some experience and my opinion of course...No 3G, horrific keys, mediocre D-pad, very dim screen, enormous size. Take away the xenon and I see little difference in pic quality from the other N series phones I've had, including my current N79.

I had two N85 creaking, light leaking, rattling but otherwise pretty neat phones just as they announced the N86, so both went back (as defective but maybe that was the norm). I've waited and waited and recently posted some low prices but just could not pull the trigger on the N86, and I'm not sure why. I guess my past N85 experiences lingered subconsciously and I kept thinking it's less than $100 more for the N97, so I whimped out and got the N97 instead. So far, so good. Folks seem to either love them or hate them, but maybe that's just true for all cell phones - I know some folks loved the N85 as much as others of us hated them. Maybe I'll be back with an N86 too. Y'all take care and have fun with the N86's!
