*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia N86 8MP

I may have spoken to soon. With v11 I now have only gotten integrated GPS to lock once, in my car. Today, trying it in the car it didn't lock, I just saw "Waiting for GPS" forever.

make that for two of us at least :(

I still have no idea how to fix this problemo from my N95 days the right way other than go offline / disconnect NM during the call.

Hi i'm nokia! We are going to bring you cutting edge technology in the n86!

An 8mp camera in a phone (gasp)... wait there are ones with 12mp now?

No matter its a carl zeiss lens... wait no one really cares?

Charging through usb... hold on thats been in phones for how many years?

Ah-ha wifi... uh thats been in so many of our phones its almost not worth mentioning anymore.

Oh yes the marvelous AMOLED... crap samsung has a 3.5" OLED.

If this is the best nokia could come up with at MWC it is truly sad :( . This is not a big announcement, simply nokia playing catch-up with the rest of the industry.

Oh well i still love their phones for RF, but as of right now Sony Ericsson has my eye with that little Idou number ;) .

So the N97's camera is useless, then, at least in low light. Plenty of reviews have shown that N97's camera takes very shoddy pictures in low light, with a lot of washout, blurring, and false color.

The N86 has done pretty damn well in low light, though, because of its better sensor. It's not as good as Xenon, for sure, but for "day to day use" as you say, it seems to produce very respectable pictures, at least compared to the N97.

That's what he's saying, I think. The N86's scratches happen on the sides, not over the lens itself, so the problem doesn't affect picture taking.

You don't have to hard reset. The n86 has user data preservation. But, I don't think it works flawless and hard reset is kinda like a clean slate. Some people say it works fine. Kinda think of it like going from windows 98 to xp. You don't have to format, but always best to. Personal preference I guess.

You can just sync your contacts to ovi suite, or to the memory card. Everything else then you just install again, takes like 10 minutes.

I assume you can do a backup too with ovi suite, never tried it.

There are many ways to do it, and everyone has their own way. But as long as your contacts are safe, and any pictures, nothing to worry about since everything else can be downloaded.

But just go ahead and update and see how the phone runs. If it's smooth, then you are good. If you notice rod strange things going on, then hard reset. It may or may not fix it.

Not every1 likes touch screen, can you hand iPhone to a grandma and she will start dialing immediately? Some people want real hardware buttons or may be some people are just old school. In my humble opinion, following is what people see, A 500$ unlocked N86 can do following compared to 1000$ locked iPhone 3gS.Even iPhone 3g is expensive then N86.Price plays a huge factor when people are deciding to buy something.

28 MM wide angle lens, variable aperture with stunning shots.
8Gb internal memory+ MicroSd slot, up to 40Gigs of memory and may be more!
Smart phone with tons of 3rd party symbian apps.
User replaceable battery.
Dual Slider.
FM transmitter.
Geo tagging.
Radio with RDS.
Ngage, you can play online and two players.
Proper Turn by Turn GPS Navigation,No internet connection required!

Rest others can add. Meanwhile watch this

I just read on the nokia blog that changing the postioning server to supl.google.com speeds up the gps lock. I did and it works a charm. Just go into settings-general-positioning. google maps locks in 15 sec or less, geocache navigator also locks very quickly.

Sorry goover I can't, I left my pixon12/i8910 back home. No other way to take pics. It's very simple process, does not require opening the phone, cut a scotch tape and stick it at your will under the slider, 3 layers is good, otherwise it will become too thick, play around with it and stick tape according to your liking.

I'm not changing my mind. I was wrong that you can't get a Xenon in a slider of any dimension whatsoever, even the size of a brick. But I think I'm correct that Nokia has decided to go with the slider form factor and that adds additional space contraints that prohibits the capacitor for the Xenon. And the N86 would apparently have to be 3 mm wider (like the C905), not 1mm. You can't compare it to the N82, since as a slider the N86 would need more overall thickness to accomodate the capacitor in just the half that has the camera mechanism. So the problem is the slider, plus the thinness of the phone together, compounding the space constraint issue.

Here's a really good article which shows the actual size of the N82 Xenon capacitor, versus an LED system. It also describes a new LED high-power flash system and has comparison photos, that shows the LED system performing about as well as a Xenon flash. The article suggests perhaps even better than the Xenon. It also shows that not all Xenon flashes are equivalent and some of them are really crappy. (Of course, we don't know if this is the LED system that the N86 has.)

That may be the point you wanted to make. But the point you actually made was the difference any source of light makes as compared to no source of light. Turning the lights on in the room would have made a drastic difference too, especially with a phone with a good sensor. But no one here is arguing that a good sensor can take a picture with no source of light. So your example really doesn't work for the point you want to make.

i wrote about how impressed i was with the battery a couple of days ago, including a listing of how i used the device during the day and evening. if you read through the last few pages you can find it. i have been pleasantly surprised

HERE IS THE REAL REVIEW OF THE NOKIA N86 NAM (ROGERS)

So here it is and sorry for you poor N86 Bimbos. :crying:

Just got this N86 phone from Rogers today and it's already back in the box for return.

This NOKIA N86 is, in my opinion, a piece of CRAP and a Marketing frame up ! :goodness:

Screen smaller (2.6 inch) than my N95 8Gb (2.8 inch makes big difference in fact), much too much contrast, colours over pushed. Settings when viewing photos always bring back the Fu... toolbar.
Navigation Buttons are so tiny its like a kiddy toy, Ridiculous. NO businessman wil ever use a cochonnerie like that !
Speakers are TOTALLY HORRIBLE compare to the N95 8Gb !
NO pencil button for Copy/Paste.
Power button much too small to get to change Profiles easily
And what a handy place to put the charging plug, on top of phone... :silly:
Just up to here is more than enough for me :help: and Surely MANY other aberrations  would come up if I would look further...

I really don't understand so many people rating this phone as the summum of the N95 legacy !

Rogers would give me this phone for Free plus a 100$ credit on my account and I would NEVER renew my contract for 3 years, this is what this phone is worth... :disappoin

ONE ADVISE: If you are planning to get some smartphone, get the VERY good NOKIA N95 8Gb (add RotateMe, Skyfire 1.1.0.13041, Google Maps 3.2.1 & NOKIA OVI if you wish to upload/share your pics/videos, update the Nokia Maps to v2.0 wk45 b03 get a Voice Navigation plan) and you will be sure to get what you expect from a solid smartphone. :clapping:

sooo... This hack isnt for the newest firmware? I would have to down-grade to a earlier date?

...I will be with american firmwares on ATT. not sure if that makes a difference or not, just making sure.

There is no downgrading on Nokia's, you will brick it if you try.
If you have V20 firmware, you can hack V20.
The most current firmware for the n86 is V21, but Nokia has not released that for the NAM product code above. The product code is on the sticker underneath the battery.

Yeah, Symbian Guru says he's going with the N97, but in the long run I think 5th edition is going to die off pretty quickly, along with Symbian. Look at the N900 and Maemo. (Here's a good overview: http://www.mobile-review.com/review/nokia-rx51-n900-en.shtml) It's so much more in line with Android, WebOS, the iPhone, even WinMo. You know, it's a real OS. And it's a redoing of things from the ground up, which is what Nokia needs to get seriously into the touch screen market. Trying to frankenstein S60 into a touch platform is just a mess.

So I don't think that the N86 will be simply the last great non-touch Symbian smart phone, like Symbian Guru thinks. I think it will turn out to be the last great Symbian phone. The N97, et al, are just hold-overs to keep market share and not seem completely irrelevant while Nokia gets its act together with Maemo.

That said, what is taking the N86 so long?! What benefit can there possibly be for Nokia not to get it out there while people are still willing to buy an expensive non-touch phone? Could they just be waiting for N85 stock to sell out?

I had trouble when I canceled my 5800, took three tries to get that done and it took two tries to cancel my N86, so that was how it went for me!!! Believe it or not, makes no difference to me!!!
