*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia N86 8MP

If you're talking about the "SW update" app, it's a no go for me. :( I haven't been able to upgrade my firmware OR download all the software updates because of my product code. Sigh.

I was hoping for a little more on the camera. After all this is the imaging flagship for nokia.

I guess I will just have to wait for part two.

Maybe you are just a jerk that really is trying to pick a fight, people like you just need to be ignored.I come here to just find out about a phone I am getting and all I get is grief from a SH#TBAG like you!!!

WoW.. If that's how you feel about the growth of technology..

We should see a mobile device as tiny as a pill in about a year or two..

Or a 60 inch fold able touch screen phone.. Now that's innovation right?

i agree. the pics of the fan in the hallway particularly impressed me. i do honestly believe that this is nokia's best camera phone to date. the guys at AAS even admit that the camera algorithms are very immature and need some serious updates. but they are confident they will come with time, just like nokia always does. and the build quality of this n86 is top notch, like the n97, and much better than previous Nseries. sure it might not make n82 users want to run out and upgrade. but the n86 has a place for people who are just looking for a new phone in genera, and want good camera with it.

and i'm really convinced that even without its xenon, firmware updates will make this thing take really good pics in the dark.

I need a quick gut check by other N86 owners. I have my NAM N86, and i actually like it alot. I have had a N95, N93, N96, N97, E61, E71, E90 (still have), 5800, and I think this phone is awesome. BUT i have a question to see if the amount of play on my slide is normal for this. Let me 1st say, this is ten times better build qualty than the other N series i have had, but want to know if its worth it to swap.

Can owners check this:

1. When the slider is closed and you have the phone horizontal to take a photo, does the slider move vertically a bit when you press the shutter button. Again you are facing the glass in front of you like a mirror. is there any play on the y axis?

2. With the slide closed, can you push on the glass and get a slight tapping sound?

3. With the slide open is and the keys backlit, is there any light leak at the bottom of the keyboard?

I kept a N95 that was totally uneven, so this is light years ahead, just want to see if its worth exchanging or not...

You forgot to comment on the N82's lack of 3G.

You were the one that asked what more people could want from a phone.
If people dont care about the size of the screen, then why has every phone manufacturer increased the size of the screen in the past two years. Just look at Nokia alone, the difference between the N95 models can be distinguished by an increase in screen sizes. All of the new phones that have been announced in the past few days, have a screen larger than the N82.
The N86 will not be crowned the king of the phone world, it will have to compete from within with the N97, and from outside sources from Samsung, SE, and others.
I could understand Nokia's product line a few years ago, They had the N95=the flagship, do everything, at high speed, and have a wow factor when people see it. Some could see this as the replacement for the N80
Next was the N82=the imaging king, it could do much the same as the N95, just slower, but it was a basic candy bar form, no one said wow when they saw the N82 in your hand. This was a replacement for the N73
The E71=Business workhorse, meant to combat hackberry's and appeal to the business minded, not meant to take great pictures or handle media usage very well. This was the replacement for the E61 or possibly the E65

Where are we now, Where does the current/future Nokia offerings fall into this list?? When you look at the new phones, which one is the flagship??
Which on is the Imaging King??? Which one is the Business workhorse???? (Actually the E71 is still the frontrunner in this category)
If the N86 is the imaging king, then it had better have a xenon flash, it can not be the king, if it takes lesser quality pictures than its predecessor. For me the N86 looks like a slightly upgraded n95. Especially with the dual slider.
The N97 starts a class all its own, It could be taken as the next communicator, with the sliding keyboard.
This leaves one giant void. No replacement for the N82???????

Thats my biggest dilemma rapid, i overall love the size of the n85/n86 but wish it had a bigger screen 2.8 at least with at least iphone resolution. :buddies:

Another semi-weird thing with the camera software: the tooltips on the camera toolbar flicker severely when they appear. It seems to be trying to immitate a fade-in effect, but the framerate of the animation is painfully slow and the flickering just makes it look bad.

I'd rather have the tool descriptions just pop up, instead of being treated to some half-arsed visual effect

If you are looking for a good nseries but can't spend more than about $300, get the N79...build quality is good, and aside from the slightly worse screen (smaller/non-oled), it's many people's choice over the N85 and N97.

yes, thats the one, and the one of the mobile newspaper/magazine. I was looking at how well the flash filled the back corners of the stand.

I read that and yeah I've noticed all the support is heading towards 5th edition now, but honestly there's nothing 5th can do with apps that 3rd can't at this point in time and I really doubt anything I find useful will come out before next summer, which is when I'll be getting a new phone, so that doesn't affect me. Personally I don't even have a lot of apps on my phone, probably moreso due to the fact that all of my space goes to music, but when I thought about it all the "essential" apps for me aren't limited to the iphone, with the exception of simplify media but i'm sure there'll be an alternative on any platform I go to.

N86 would be a keeper as a backup phone, N97 is still nice but will ultimately be dominated by what shows up next summer so I'd sell it then.
