*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia N86 8MP

You people are aware that the N86 is already available for ~$500 at multiple sites, right? And this is the import version that I'm talking about. There's a decent chance that the NAM variant will be even cheaper.

yes compass and usb charging.

PRESS RELEASE - When Nokia set out to make the best mobile imaging device, it combined wide-angle Carl Zeiss optics and an 8 megapixel sensor, resulting in performance comparable to a stand alone digital camera. The Nokia N86 8MP is designed to excel in both bright and low light conditions, and it?s optimized for both video and still imaging. Its high-speed connectivity ensures easy and convenient sharing. The Nokia N86 8MP is expected to begin shipping in the second quarter of 2009 with an estimated retail price of EUR 375, before taxes and subsidies.

?People demand mobile cameras that take excellent pictures in all light conditions,? says Juha-Pekka Sipponen, Director, Nokia Nseries. ?That?s why the aperture of the Nokia N86 8MP is comparable to that of a high-quality, stand-alone digital camera. Whether it?s running with the bulls in Pamplona or capturing the panoramic beauty of a sunrise over Sydney, the Nokia N86 8MP will take brilliantly clear, wide-angle images that are instantly geotagged to be uploaded onto sites like Ovi Share or Flickr.?

Easy enough for a novice to use, the Nokia N86 8MP packs enough punch to impress an experienced photographer. This includes a wide-angle Carl Zeiss Tessar lens for panoramic pictures, shorter latencies and variable aperture for super sharp photos in challenging bright and low light conditions. The fast mechanical shutter ensures pictures with less motion blur while the dual LED camera flash is powerful enough for excellent photography and video capture.

?When it comes to taking the best digital photos, it?s the quality of the lens and the sensor that count, not just the quantity of pixels. The Nokia N86 8MP is the first mobile device with variable aperture, adding to the Carl Zeiss Tessar lens for excellent results. It has never been easier to capture special moments in such a great quality,? says Helmut Heier of Carl Zeiss.

Every detail of the metal-framed Nokia N86 8MP is thoughtfully designed with photography in mind, including 8 GB of internal memory for up to 4,000 images. Like any high-end digital camera, the memory can be increased with an exchangeable 16 GB microSD card. The device also offers a bright OLED screen with scratch resistant hardened glass, easy photo management, full sync capability with a PC and TV-out support for slide shows.

Shipping with the latest version of Nokia Maps and full Ovi integration, the Nokia N86 8MP gives a personal dimension to photos and videos. People can share their location with personal content like geotagged photos. The Nokia N86 8MP comes with a built-in compass, along with an integrated 3-months license for full voice and pedestrian navigation so that happy snappers don?t lose their way when capturing life through the camera lens.

Multimedia features - music, games, video

The Nokia N86 8MP, with its integrated kick stand, is ideal for watching videos and playing games. Each Nokia N86 8MP can play up to 25 hours of music on one charge which can be enjoyed with the Nokia Bluetooth Stereo Headset BH-214 also announced today. People can build a personal music collection from the millions of tracks and playlists available from the Nokia Music Store, where available.

More N86 NAM comments:

To answer the question on the camera button: I find that the first click (half way) works very well with just the right amount of resistance but the force and travel required to activate the second click and take the picture are not as good or linear. It takes a lot more force and travel and is quite mushy.

Also, on the numeric keypad, I find the buttons aren't raised enough and you have to push petty hard with the flat of your finger, with very little travel, to actuate them. I find it easier to dial on the N85 keypad, which I did not expect. I find they work better pushed with the thumb nail that the flat of the finger which is not how I want to use the keypad.

Overall, the UI on this phone related to the operation of any of the buttons/switches is a complete dissapointment.

No change connection feature in the browser, either.

Looks like Nokia gave the solution to the build quality of the N85.........buy an N86!

hopefully the 8GB internal memory isnt as bad as the N95's

I'm 'excited' about it only because I like to theorize that the N86 is actually an N85 with a better designed shell.

Of course, I'm not going to run out and buy one, but, I will be paying attention to people's opinions on the phone once it is released.

I know. Can't really say much about it since only had the phone for a couple days before the new firmware was released. But love the phone.

To get rid of the ovi, just change your standby mode to something besides ovi.

the c905 has its own issues (poor battery life, crappy slider, horrible build quality in general...) I posted some pics of the cheap pos in the c905 thread in the se forum...

without all that jargon and hitech elitest talk, to put it in layman's words imo, :
n86 8mp is one of the top if not the top performer smart/cameraphone. even when taking in consideration it's lower mpixel count than satio and others, n95 is not a better cameraphone ( although it took fairly decent pics), the reason for that bluish/purplish tint in your pics, is the camera being set up on autoexposure without any compensation for ambient light levels in pic, put on USER CUSTOMISABLE MODE and adjust the EV+/- to get best resultes like in any proper high-end camera.
for snow covered, sunny( light, off white scenes) use more EV+1 OR EV+2
for overcast, dark ( dark, grey, off black scenes) use less EV-1 OR EV-2
this is the basics of photography digital or otherwise, being applied in this situation , one more proof that the n86 is an advanced highly customisable camera.

There is a single dude going around and posting the same rant about firmware bugs on every single blog post that has anything remotely to do with the n86. I'm assuming that is where you got this stuff, because you list most of his main complaints.

Some of the bugs he mentioned could very well be legit, and hopefully will be fixed soon. But some of the other stuff, like the crashes/lockups that force him to pull the battery, sounds like he just got a defective unit. I wouldn't read too much into it.

edit: also, as someone mentioned, v20 firmware isn't even out yet, so that may very well fix some of the things he is griping about.

I agree hondaguy, I returned my N86. I tried the generic fw too and couldn't get maps to stay open for longer than a minute. I have a N82 as backup and scrolling through menus and apps is probablt 2x as fast than the N86 was. Totally unacceptable!
I loved the camera and size but it is totally unusable.

Now I hope I didn't make another mistake by picking up a new N97 Mini NAM....

Do any of your n86's have dust under the screen? I just noticed 1 piece of dust in the bottom left corner. Maybe it was always there, but never seen it before.

I remember reading before getting the n86 it has a sealed screen and no dust issues will happen. I thought, oh good, my n82 had so much dust. I'm thinking that dust can easily get in by the right and left soft keys. And through the dpad. Maybe not and it was always there.

So checking on other n86's? Thanks.

No, there's a real mechanical shutter being used.
If you look into the camera lens, you'll see the shutter open and close when you take a picture.
The N73 has does this, so do the N95 and N82. Some other N-Series phones also have it, but I know for sure the N78 doesn't do it.

Shutter speed hasn't changed since the N73, that's disappointing.
