*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia N86 8MP

Curious: What proof do we have a good build quality? I see it has spring assist on the slide mechanism. With out getting "touchy feely" with it I can't tell build quality and N series is notorious for poor builds. If I missed a hands on report somewhere then my bad. I'm just starting to get interested.

Hi all N86 owners :)

I'm in the market for a new phone and I'm considering the N86. Can you guys tell me what the battery life is like in real-life, relatively light usage? Meaning maybe 30 mins of calls/day, 10-20 SMS, some e-mail checking and a bit of web browsing. And the occasional photo, of course.

I hate devices that need recharging daily, especially cell phones!

Also, since I would most likely keep the phone for 2-3 years, how would you rate its durability?

Thanks in advance!

Bright light works pretty well with N86 as torchlight.

N86 is a excellent device. People thinking it to be just a "updated N95" needs to look under the hood to understand the improvements it has over N95 ..It has a very fast processor. Its working very fast even with those theme effects on for me. Everything about this phone is so much better than N95. I am just too lazy to post all those things.

IMO: Absolutely not.

The limiting factor for all camera phones is the small optics: Short focal length, small sensor. In this regard the N86 is a step backwards even from previous N-series phones -- even from the N85! Whereas the N85 has a 5.4mm focal length, that of the N86 is only 4.6mm.

To compensate, and in order to avoid reducing the already tiny CCD sensor even further, the viewing angle is wider. However the fact remains that a given object a given distance away from the lens will be captured over a smaller area on the CCD sensor than in phones with longer focal lengths.

The megapixel count is also far too high. This translates to even tinier individual cells, which in turn means lower signal/noise ratio, loss of dynamic range (and susceptibility to artifacts such as blooming against bright backgrounds), "flat" colors, etc. etc.

Since you are limiting yourself to smartphones, (and I presume, ones with AT&T-compatible 3G?) - you might want to consider the Sony Ericsson U1a ("Satio A"). On the downside, it is 12MP. On the upside, it has a 5.91mm focal length and Xenon flash. It also runs S60v5.

I'm getting really tempted to buy the Euro N86 after seeing Nikki's pics.

1900 works just fine here in Dallas and I rarely travel anywhere in the US it doesn't work.

I had an experience like this with the camera application after I upgraded to v20. It wasn't with panoramic mode. It happened just starting the camera app. Operational error message and telling me to restart phone. After I restarted a couple times I never had the error again. I don't think a hard reset was necessary, but I can't remember because I did so many hard resets later to try to fix other problems.

This is exactly why I got rid of my N85 and E71. They picked up background noise like no other. I'm interested if Nokia improved on this front. I read the upcoming E55 will have noise cancellation technology.

Yeah, kinda.

What they do is open a single imap connection with you and you sit there idling. Basically you connect to nokia via imap and say "Here I am, send me a message when there is one to send".

Then nokia has your email account info and is logging into your accounts. So now they are logged into your gmail account waiting for an email. An email comes and then they send it to your phone (as you already told them here I am, send me a message).

The benefit to this is only 1 connection open, yet you can get 10 different email accounts. And push of course. It could benefit some people.

I just set my emails to check every 4 hours and that is fine. Once in a while I might manually.

At first I was gonna wait for the white, but now I will get whatever comes out first. My N97 is getting buggier by the minute. Hell...if the black one does not come out soon, i may have to jump ship to a SE C905.

"There is some bad news to report as well unfortunately ? despite being announced at ?375 abroad (about $530 at today?s exchange rate, $474 when announced), the NAM N86 8MP is going to run you $558. If photography is your game however, that?s hardly a tall order for an unlocked top-of-the-line camera phone. Anyone in?"

thats a big no no. Almost the same price as a on sale (which happens every other day) n97.

Don't expect E72 camera to be anywhere close to N series. Nokia will NEVER put better cameras on non N series phones! Look at 5800XM .. 3MP CZ lens which is worse than a 3+ years old N73!
