*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia N86 8MP

Its been two months since I had my N86 and u guys are still waiting for the NAM version to release.. No wonder nokia is not that famous in US .. Why cant they release the NAM version at the same time as other?

Anyways, get N86 whenever it becomes available as its one heck of a handset. Best nokia I had since N82. :clapping:

Mobilecityonline.com (which i'm not totally in love with, on a return they charged me $45 for a video cable i never had) is almost cheaper every time for a phone than nokia, other than specials.
Also, there have been instances of people getting their phones earlier from retailers than from nokia.

Sinta shall henceforth be known as she who wears red. I got tired of forever forgetting my username and password to several sites and decided to consolidate somewhat. But my real name is Nikki, so feel free to call me by that. :)

Okay, here are a few more low-light pics:

Auto mode made this come out with flash:

... but surprisingly when I manually turned off the flash, the pic was still clear and sharp despite the poor light conditions:

nearly no light, inside the car in a parking lot:

A macro shot of the fish bento box I had for dinner in better light conditions than in the bar, but not ideal:

I've only had the phone for a day, but I've spent a considerable amount of time tinkering around. I wanted to test the battery life, but I left the phone hooked up to the laptop downloading the latest maps etc. and the data cable that it came with started charging it automatically. Awesome!

Things I don't like about the N86:
-- It isn't supported by Truphone!! I'm hoping this is just due to how new it is, because that's a pretty big inconvenience for me.
-- It has already frozen up on me about five times, all of them when I'd just powered on the phone. I had to take out the battery and put it back in.
-- I know there's a new firmware out for it, but obviously not for my product code, because both the OTA client and NSU say there are no updates available.
-- The sliding mechanism is solid, so solid that sliding the keypad in and out takes more than a nudge
-- I knew the LED flash would perform worse than the N82's xenon flash in still pictures, but I didn't think I'd miss xenon's freezing powers as much as I do. I'm having to be a little more conscious about keeping the camera still when I take pictures.
-- I don't like the camera button. On the N82 the half-press and the full press were so clearly delineated by feel. On the N86 you almost have to press it in full to get it to focus, and then you have to press it in deeper to get it to take the pictures.
-- I keep getting fingerprints on the lower half of the screen, where I have to push my thumb to slide the phone closed/open.
-- The new screensaver clock is all very nice and cool-looking, but since it's (purposely) heavily pixelated it's not as easy to read. Also, it's displayed in landscape mode, with no option to change it.
-- Still no dedicated pencil key for marking and unmarking multiple items!
-- You need to use a fingernail to pop out the little kickstand.
-- The SIM card holder design is horrible! I needed to use tweezers to pull the SIM card out.
-- The camera cover is in the style of the N97, and you have to press down on the cover and slide it aside instead of just flicking a switch. I miss the satisfying swish of the N82's lens being uncovered.
-- I miss the multimedia key. I know a lot of people thought it was pointless, but I loved that I could bring up a list of my 5 most frequently texted/called contacts. There's no replacement on the N86.

Things I like about it: (keep in mind that this is my first FP2 device)
-- I love the keylock toggle. You can lock the keypad from any menu, not just the standby screen.
-- The screen is BRILLIANT indoors. It's so pretty I like to press a key now and then, any key, just to see that sharp, clear screen staring up at me.
-- The build quality is phenomenal. I read before I bought it that it was heavy, but I barely notice. It just reeks of quality. Where the N82 was hollow and bulky, the N86 still manages to feel sleek and packed solid. Nothing creaks, squeaks, or sticks.
-- The camera menu has been revamped, and it now offers a degree of customization. You can choose to put your own shortcuts on the main toolbar (like brightness, ISO, etc)
-- The camera comes with a panorama mode which is just like Panoman. It's really easy to use.
-- Video quality is incredible with the dual LEDs. No, it won't perfectly illuminate subjects across the room, but in most cases the flash is more than adequate. In fact, I got more than a few complaints from my friends that the flash was too bright to look into.
-- As Steve Litchfield reported, the N86 has "real" digital zoom. Instead of getting the highly pixelated Impressionist junk you normally get when zooming in, on the N86 the video is still pretty clear at 6x zoom. Don't ask me how it works; I just know it does. And WELL.
-- The FM transmitter, while not static-free 100% of the time, gets the job done. It's awesome not to have to bother with wires.
-- Strangely, considering the problems I had with it freezing upon start-up, my N86 hasn't frozen on me while I was actually doing something on it. Menus are reasonably fast, no glitches, no lags. Pretty good considering I'm on the earlier firmware.
-- Having the data cable charge it while it's connected is cool. So is having just one port for both the data cable and charger.
-- The built-in web browser seems to load pages a lot faster than the one in FP1 did. Seems slicker and smoother, as well, though it's still not perfect.
-- My N86 came with a handy little dictionary. It's far from complete, as there were a few words I couldn't find in it, but it's a good idea.
-- I love the 8gb of built-in memory.
-- The destinations feature finally brings native access point prioritizing!
-- You can set a program to automatically start when the kickstand is pulled out. I set it to "none", but I still like having the option.
-- Did I mention how GOOD it feels in my hand?

That's about all I can think of at the moment. If anyone has any questions (or requests for specific pics), feel free to hit me up.

Totally agree, this is what the N85 should have been. Not the fall apart, ugly, plastic thing that it is. Well, I guess at least it's an answer to our calls about getting some decent build quality on N-series.

what do you mean by smart dialing? do you mean type the name on the homescreen and it pops up after a few letters? if so - there is an app for that.

amazon will not ship cell phones to canada, so i paid with my canadian visa card and gave them a shipping address to a ups store in niagara falls, new york. i had to be in st catherines this week for business and it literally took me 25 minutes to drive from st catherines to the queenston-lewiston bridge, cross the border and pick up from the ups store.

I'm glad for what the Nokia N97 is doing for potential providers, Nokia, and future developers - Nokia is listening intently to requests it seems and allowing changes that benefit us in the long rung so it'll trickle down.

OLED seems great on the N85, and if it drops below $350CAN I may get it, but the E71/E66 type design queues and build quality are what drew me to the N86! The OLED - I think is Nokia testing the market and its up to us to really blog about it and show it off in all its glory! Then I hope Nokia will consider using it in ALL mid-top-tier S60/Symbian devices from September '09 and onward.

The dark blue N86 is sexy sheek! The white model also looks just as cool. Is compass also in the N86, along with USB Charging?
