*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia N86 8MP

Why do you think this phone will be a big seller for Nokia?

As I stated before, look at the specs on the N95 8gb, and the N96. What does the N86 really offer that the others dont?
They are are the same form factor, They are all very close in size.
The n95 is lighter. Has a dual Arm 11 at 332mhz
The n86 has a single 434 mhz, but so far I dont see a graphics accelerator.
I am not sure how the processors compare, as I havent researched this yet.

The N86 looks like an N95 with a smaller screen but OLED screen, micro sd slot, and RDS FM and FM transmitter, and the camera improvements.
With the exception of the camera improvements, we know what the other feature will be like. So the only unkown is how well the camera will work. If its a huge success, then the phone will set itself apart from Nokia's other offerings.
Remember, many of the people here buy the next generation of there phone if it offers a distinct update. If this camera is only slightly better than the N82, and does not take better pictures in low light, I dont see N82 owners giving up their current phones to buy this. Isnt that what Nokia is hoping for. The N82 owners to buy the next generation???

Maybe Nokia is converging the N95 slider style with the N82. But if you are combining devices, wouldnt you take the best of both models? Like graphics accelerator, xenon flash, the 2.8 screen size, form factor.

I still contend that the N86 is another update of the N95. Not the update for the N82.

Maybe the fact that Nokia hasn't should tell everyone something. Maybe they saw their profits versus the expense and decided that was the wrong way, despite how successful it looked from the outside? So far, N97 appears to be on track to match N95 sales, at the same euro price point, and probably costs them far far less.

More likely, Nokia's shift in strategy from cutting edge hardware to a services based model was almost certainly en route before the economic woes hit and the phones we're seeing now, as well. The evolution of their hardware porfolio should be most interesting, particularly if they pull their head out wrt Ovi or if it follows the other software models that they've already abandoned.

That basketball picture looks awesome  makes me want the N86 more and more :p I don't know why I am obsessed with this phone even though there are so many better phones out there. argh.

I got an N86 for my father for Christmas. When we put his AT&T sim card in the N86, every time it turns on we get the message, "Allow Sim card to Send Text Message to Carrier?" Or something to that effect. What is this about? Should I hit yes or cancel? Can I get it to stop doing that? I've never seen anything like that with T-Mobile.

Unfortunately, no. It didn't come with a TV-out cable, either. I'm just using the 8gb microSDHC card that I was using on my N82.

LOL no, I'm in the Philippines right now on vacation. I certainly didn't expect to buy a phone, but here I am!

Good idea. I'll give the timer idea a go, but I still think it shouldn't be blurry just because of that. Maybe the later firmware fixes that?

Why isnt it possible to release a quad 3g phone. So there wouldnt need to be a Euro 3g version and an American 3g version? Does this phone even have Xenon flash? I cant go to gsmarena right now to check. Anyway if it doesnt that would be disappointing.

When will Nokiausa ever get pre-orders figured out???

Once again, people walk in from the street and buy phones that should have been delivered to pre-orders. If someone signed up and put their money on the line a couple of months back, take care of them first.

Why do loyal customers get such rotten treatment, again and again?

I do want a N86, and I'm glad I didn't pre-order one.

Well, I do think there's a subjective element to this. Different people seem to perceive or care about different elements of call quality in different ways. For every headset I tried, there was a definite group of people that swear by it.

That said, I read a lot of reviews and forum comments on all of these headsets before buying any of them and for me there was just a huge discrepency in most cases between the things people said and the actual quality. I don't know how many times I saw the words "crystal clear" used to describe one or another favorite headset, amongst the ones I mentioned. In retrospect I don't know what planet people are on. Nothing came close to crystal clear from my perspective. Maybe relative to older bluetooth headsets, but for me as a first time bluetooth headset user I was deeply underwhelmed.

I'm suprised that you read complaints about echoing with the 975. I did not notice that and I felt the reviews and comments I read generally agreed that it (and the Voyager Pro) have the most natural sounding voice quality, which was definitely also my experience. It just didn't cut it for noise cancellation. But in a quiet environment, the 975 would probably be my top choice.

I did read lots of great things about the Q1 too. That's why I tried it. But like I said I was underwhelmed and there was a big discrepency between what I read and my experience (I also found the dependency on voice commands annoying--the Q1 was for me the only headset I walked away from feeling like using it was a pain). Keep in mind I was testing it particularly in a noisy environment, which is what I wanted it for. But it's supposed to be one of the ones with great noise cancellation. For me it just didn't do it.

I feel like people who are into the headsets enough to write about them don't have much persepctive. They get all excited about their latest gadget and just can't see how mediocre it is. Tellingly, in contrast to the online reviews I read and the forum posts, the employees at Best Buy and the Sprint Store, who had tried lots of headsets, readily agreed that even the best of the bluetooth still really aren't there yet.

But again I do think it's personal and highly dependent on the specific setting you're mostly using the headset in. So you probably just have to try a bunch to find the right one. If the Q1 doesn't work out, I think it's worth trying the 975, if it's not too much trouble. I wouldn't put too much stock in what you read. Also, as I've learned, these headsets seem to perform differently with different phones. So maybe the 975 is echoey on some phones, but not the N86.

What do you mean? When I slide open the phone the active standy clock is always there.

When the slider is closed and light goes off, I never see a clock.

Would love to know what you mean.

Well, I don't count taxes when talking about the "going price" of a phone. I don't know where you live and what your taxes are? Some places don't collect tax. So I don't really go into the details of the exact buying scenario with tax analysis.

But basically that the demand for this device will wane shortly, after all it is N85i. It doesn't really take better pictures, but oh I forgot it does confer bragging rights, I mean 8MP, wow that sounds great. Anyway, I wouldn't really actually show the results to anyone with any amount of actual discernment in viewing a digital photograph.

The basic tech is still 2-3 years old, just a new case and all. It will hit N85 prices much sooner than you think. This isn't the N95 era anymore. That was an actual innovative device.

BTW: You already paid $450? Wow, has it even been two weeks yet?

Do people think it's better to update the N86 with the Device Software Updater program or over the air (using wifi)? Or does it make any difference.

What boggles me... I was reading the Press Release of the Shipping of the N86.

How can this happen if the phone hasn't even reach the consumers yet? :befuddled

You guys are too presumptuous, or I should made myself more clear.

I only bought 1 model, it sucked, & then got a replacement that had an abysmal build as well. I sent it back & called it quits. I never stated that I bought 3 devices.

My girlfriends brother ordered one around the same time I got my replacement & when he received his unit, the build was still a joke.

BTW Ancient Warrior....you really think that build quality doesn't differ from each of Nokia's "N" series handsets to another?

Strangely enough Internet Radio worked fine under ↲version 1.00 AND continues to work with SAVED stations. Now I only wished I had saved more than a few stations during my initial tests.↲ ↲sure hope this bug gets addressed in version 12.xx
